The Turning Chain
The turning chain is an essential technique in crochet. For clarity, we exclusively use the term turning chain in our glossary.

A turning chain is a chain stitch that is crocheted at the end of a row. Turn your work and then crochet back along the row. If the first stitch of your new row is a single crochet (UK: double crochet) or a half double crochet (UK: half treble), you need one turning chain. If the first stitch of the new row is a double crochet (UK: treble) or a treble crochet (UK: double treble), two turning chains are required.
Very important! When changing colors, you should crochet the turning chains using the new color.
