Star Stitch in Rows
You already know how to crochet the star stitch in the round. Now we'll show you how easy it is to crochet the star stitch in rows.
Each star is always made up of 5 loops. The stitch pattern is created on the right-side row (RS). After each star, you always chain 1, which serves as the stitch for the next star. The complete star stitch is only visible after you've crocheted the wrong-side row (WS).
On the wrong-side row (WS), work 2 half double crochets (UK: half treble crochets) into each star.
Starting the star stitch on the right-side row (RS) without changing colors:
After finishing the previous row, chain 3. Skip the first chain from the hook. The 1st loop of the star is already on your hook.
For the next 4 loops, insert your hook into the following places and pull up a loop each time:
- 2nd insertion point: insert into the chain stitch,
- 3rd insertion point: insert into the next chain stitch,
- 4th insertion point: insert into the 1st stitch of the row,
- 5th insertion point: insert into the next stitch.
You now have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all 5 loops, and chain 1.
Starting the star stitch on the right-side row (RS) with a color change:
After finishing the previous row, chain 4. Skip the first chain from the hook. The 1st loop of the star is already on your hook.

For the next 4 loops, insert your hook into the following places and pull up a loop each time:
2nd insertion point: insert into the chain stitch.

3rd insertion point: insert into the next chain stitch; the last chain stitch is skipped because of the color change.

4th insertion point: insert into the 1st stitch.

5th insertion point: insert into the next stitch.

You now have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all 5 loops, and chain 1.

All other stars in this right-side row (RS):
The 1st loop is on your hook. You need 4 more loops. To do this, insert your hook into the following places and pull up a loop each time:

2nd insertion point: into the previous star (the hole formed by the chain stitch).

3rd insertion point: into the same stitch as the 5th loop of the previous star.

4th insertion point: into the next stitch.

5th insertion point: into the next stitch.

You have 5 loops on the crochet hook. Yarn over, pull through all 5 loops, and chain 1.

Continue like this until the end of the right-side row (RS), and finish with the last stitch.
The last stitch:
The last stitch consists of 3 loops. The 1st loop for the last stitch is already on the crochet hook.
For the other 2 loops, insert your hook into the following places and pull up a loop each time:
- 2nd insertion point: into the previous star (the hole formed by the chain stitch)
- 3rd insertion point: into the same stitch as the 5th loop of the previous star
Yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on the hook, then chain 1 as a turning chain and turn your work.
The wrong-side row (WS):
On the wrong-side row (WS), always insert your hook into the star (the hole formed by the chain stitch) and work 2 half double crochets into each star up to the second-to-last star.
For the last star in the row, work only 1 half double crochet, and work the 2nd half double crochet into the 1st loop (the horizontal loop) of the 1st star from the right-side row (RS).
You can repeat the right-side row (RS) and wrong-side row (WS) for as long as you like.
