The Starting Ring
This section is all about the starting ring (or foundation ring). The beginning of any project that is crocheted in the round is called a starting ring.

To make a starting ring, start by chaining 4 stitches.

Next, insert your hook into the first chain stitch of the chain.

Then, yarn over and pull the working yarn through the first chain stitch and the loop on your crochet hook to make 1 slip stitch.

In the picture, you can clearly see what the small, closed ring looks like. It was closed with a slip stitch.

When continuing with single crochet (UK double crochet) or half double crochet (UK half treble crochet), you only need to make 1 starting chain. To do this, yarn over again and pull it through the slip stitch loop on your hook.

For double crochet (UK treble crochet), 2 chain stitches are needed.
