Holding Yarn and Hook for Crochet

Once you know what a stitch looks like, the next step is learning how to hold your yarn and hook comfortably. On this page, we show you a simple basic hand position for crochet.

First, place the yarn over the index finger of your left hand.

Next, bring the yarn end around your thumb from the front so that a loop is formed. Insert the crochet hook from below into this loop, catch the working yarn with the hook, and pull it downward through the loop.

Now remove your thumb from the loop and gently pull the yarn end. Make sure the working yarn stays on the hook while you pull it through the thumb loop. Your slip knot is ready.

In the next step, wrap the working yarn around the fingers of your left hand.

This controls the yarn tension while you crochet. If you hold your fingers close together, the yarn moves more firmly. If your hand is looser, the yarn glides through more easily.

Now hold the slip knot with your thumb and middle finger and pull the yarn through the loop.
