Star Stitch in Rounds, Version 1
The star stitch is one of the most popular crochet stitches. Not sure how it works? We'll show you. There are 2 ways to crochet the star stitch in rounds. Here you'll find version 1 first.
A star always consists of 5 loops. After each star, you always crochet 1 chain stitch, which is used as the stitch in the next round.
The 1st loop of the star is always the loop that remains on your crochet hook after that chain stitch. You won’t see the full pattern until you’ve crocheted at least 2 rounds.
Starting the star stitch:
After the last slip stitch join, chain 3. Skip the 1st chain from the hook. The 1st loop of the star is already on your hook.

For the other 4 loops, insert your hook into the following places and pull up a loop each time:
2nd insertion point: into the next chain,

3rd insertion point: into the slip stitch,

4th insertion point: into the same place as the last slip stitch join (the 1st stitch of the previous round),

5th insertion point: into the next stitch

You now have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all 5 loops, and chain 1.

All other stars in this round:
The 1st loop is on your hook. You need 4 more loops. To do that, insert your hook into the following places and pull up a loop each time:

2nd insertion point: into the last star (the hole created by the chain stitch),

3rd insertion point: around the diagonal strand of the 5th loop of the last star,

4th insertion point: into the same place as the 5th loop of the last star,

5th insertion point: into the next stitch of the previous round.

You have 5 loops on your crochet hook. Yarn over, pull through all 5 loops ...

... and then chain 1.
Continue like this to the end of the round. For the last star of the round, leave out the chain stitch and close the round with 1 slip stitch into the 1st loop of the 1st star (= horizontal loop) of this round.

You only work this round once.
The next round:
At the beginning, chain 3 again. The 1st loop is on your crochet hook. For the other 4 loops, insert your hook into the following places and pull up a loop each time:
- 2nd insertion point: into the next chain,
- 3rd insertion point: into the slip stitch,
- 4th insertion point: into the 1st loop (horizontal loop) of the 1st star of the previous round,
- 5th insertion point: into the 1st star (the hole created by the chain stitch) of the previous round
Now yarn over again, pull through all 5 loops, and chain 1.
All other stars:
After the chain stitch, you have 1 loop on your crochet hook again. For the other 4 loops, insert your hook into the following places and pull up a loop each time:
- 2nd insertion point: into the star (the hole created by the chain stitch),
- 3rd insertion point: into the same place as the 5th loop of the last star,
- 4th insertion point: into the 1st loop (horizontal loop) of the next star,
- 5th insertion point: into the next star (the hole created by the chain stitch)
Repeat these stitches for each additional star until you reach the end of the round.
Repeat this round for all following rounds.
Closing the round:
To close the round, crochet the last star of the round without a chain stitch. Then insert your hook into the 1st loop (horizontal loop) of the 1st star of the round and make 1 slip stitch. Because you left out the chain stitch, the slip stitch join looks similar to a star.
If you'd like to continue the star stitch in continuous rounds (a spiral), here's how to proceed:
Work the last star before the transition like all the others. The star at the transition uses the following stitches:
- 2nd insertion point: into the last star (the hole created by the chain stitch),
- 3rd insertion point: into the same place as the 5th loop of the last star,
- 4th insertion point: into the 1st loop (horizontal loop) of the 1st star of this round,
- 5th insertion point: into the 1st star (the hole created by the chain stitch)
Insert your hook into all of these places and pull up a loop each time until you have 5 loops on your hook again. Now yarn over, pull through all 5 loops, and chain 1.
After that, crochet all stars like in the previous round.
