Yarn Diet 2022 – Defeating Your Inner Slacker

Hi,

I had to briefly!!! interrupt my yarn diet. I had to buy some yarn for a project.
That was back in late October.

But I’ve been sticking with it ever since.

Celebrating Christmas with children: how does it work for you?

Hi,

we’re usually on vacation for Christmas. We’ve had it booked since last August.
We don’t know if we’ll be allowed to go. We’re assuming we’ll have to cancel the trip.
:-(

We don’t know yet how we’ll spend Christmas.

Best regards, Heike

Your Pets

Hi,

we have two mini pigs, Lilo and Manni.

Lilo has been with us since 2006 and Manni since 2007. They’re both 15 years old now.
We hope we’ll get to spend a few more years with them.

Yarn Diet starting January 1, 2020: 1 year without buying yarn / overcoming your inner slacker. Who’s in?

When do you absolutely need a pattern?

Right now, I’m on a clothing kick.

I buy a pattern when I see one that immediately blows me away.
Otherwise, I add the pattern to my wish list for later.

How did you discover Crazypatterns, and what keeps you coming back?

Hello,

A few years ago, I was searching for crochet patterns on a search engine and that’s how I ended up at Crazypatterns.

What keeps me here?

The great patterns offered here and the friendly interactions in the forum.

I really enjoy being here.

Best regards, Heike

How do you celebrate Easter? Do you have time for crafts over the holidays?

We had to cancel our family gathering, too.

We’ll have a cozy breakfast in the garden and go for a walk at noon.
We’ll spend the rest of the time in our garden.

I’ll definitely have time for crafting ;-)

How's the yarn stash looking?

I’ve been on the diet program since January 1, 2020, and my stash is doing well.
It’s dwindling slowly… but surely.

Should we carry on as usual here in the forum despite the coronavirus?

I also think it’s great to have a virus-free zone for a change.

Everyday life is already dominated by the coronavirus. My daughters won’t be going back to school until April 27. I work in the public sector for a government agency, and I’m curious to see how things will unfold for us.

Crocheting really helps me unwind and relax.

Let’s keep going and not let this get us down.

What yarn or material are you currently working with?

I’m currently working with Alize Diva, a thin microfiber yarn.

I’ve had it in my closet for about 3 years, and now it’s finally getting used.

Gradient vest — how does it work with yarn cakes?

Hi everyone,

I’d really love to crochet a gradient vest. They look really great.

But how can I use the yarn cakes so that I get a nice gradient?
I still have two yarn cakes at home, but I don’t know how to arrange them to create
a nice gradient.

Hardworking little helpers: What are you working on right now?

Hi,

I’m starting a new project tonight. But I’m not sure yet whether I should make a sweater or a vest or something else.

I’ve been thinking all day about what I could start.

My Swoncho has been a UFO since yesterday. The sleeves are still missing, but for some reason I don’t feel like finishing it—just like my dragon lamp.

Oh, I’m kind of in a crochet slump… even though I have soooooooo much yarn.

Love, Heike

Who do you most enjoy making handmade items for?

Hi,

I most enjoy crocheting for my kids and myself.

I also give away quite a few things.

Whenever my kids go on a school trip, I pack a
little surprise box in their suitcase.
My oldest has been on a school trip to Bavaria since Saturday. I crocheted her a
little pig and brushed it out so it’s nice
and soft.
When she called on Saturday night, she was really happy.

Hi,

I’m still working on the dragon lamp, but I’ve also started a Swoncho because with
the dragon lamp, I’m now getting to the fiddly part, and in the evenings while watching TV I need
something that’s quick and easy to make.

What do you still need to get done before Christmas? Are you satisfied with what you’ve accomplished in 2019?

I just have two more gifts to wrap. Tomorrow I’ll do some laundry, and on Saturday I’ll pack my bags for vacation.
On Sunday we’ll visit my Godi, and then we’ll head out for Garmisch that night.

What was your best Christmas ever?

Hi,

my best Christmas was in 2015. It was the first time we went on vacation with our kids over Christmas. Before that, we’d have the house full of guests for three days every year, and my husband and I were constantly cooking, cleaning, and entertaining. Until we just didn’t feel like it anymore and decided to go away.

The best part was:

we had time for ourselves and the kids. And when the kids said on Christmas Eve—after we’d unwrapped the presents and played and done crafts with them—“Mom, you finally have time for us at Christmas”—I just thought: we’d done EVERYTHING right.

Since then, we’ve gone away every year and enjoyed our time as a family.

Best, Heike

Happy St. Nicholas Day // Have a great weekend

Thank you ;-)

I also wish you all a happy St. Nicholas Day and a lovely weekend.

We’re putting up the Christmas tree tomorrow, and tomorrow evening there’s a Christmas party at
our daughters’ club.
Other than that, it’ll be a quiet weekend - or at least I hope so.

Best wishes, Heike

How's the yarn? Woolly Wednesday

Hi,

I ordered some yarn the day before yesterday because I still have to make two Glitzer Glotzies for Christmas and didn’t have any fluffy yarn.

Otherwise, I’ll probably buy a few more skeins of Catania, and then I can start my “yarn diet” on January 1, 2020.

Since I still have lots of projects planned and already have the yarn for almost all of them, I should be able to get by for a long time.

Best regards

The Perfect Crochet Hook: Any Tips?

I also prefer working with Prym hooks.

They’re the perfect size for me, feel good in my hand, and the handle isn’t too thick.

I’ve tried many different kinds, but somehow I always end up going back to
Prym.

But as the previous commenter mentioned, everyone has to find the hook that works best for them.

Stretching a crocheted piece and securing it with craft glue

Hi,

I crocheted an angel with a beautiful wing (pattern from here).

Now I’m not quite sure how to stretch the wing and brush it with craft glue.

Has anyone done this before?

It would be great if you could give me a few tips.

Thank you very much.

Craft magazines

I also have a large collection of magazines. I have a subscription to one of them. I buy a few others at the store. I’ve also bought a few books. Right now, I’m crocheting from the book *Glitzer Glotzies*. I bought it used on E***.

I’d also like the link to the swap group.

Hi,

my daughters have me stumped with an unsolvable problem.

They want me to crochet them a one-piece snowman pajama set.

But how???? And what kind of yarn should I use so it turns out nice and cozy?

I told them it won’t be ready until next year at the earliest. But those two never forget anything......

How are you doing? Are you feeling the Christmas rush?

The weekend was nice, but too short.
It’s been raining here all day.

I’ll be putting up my Christmas decorations sometime this week, since we’ll be
at Phantasialand and in Cologne next weekend, and on the first
weekend of Advent, I’ll be at a spa hotel with my husband (without the kids).

I’m not stressing about Christmas at all. In our family, only the kids get presents
and I’ve already got some of them.

We still want to bake a few cookies—we’ll see when we can find the time.

Yarn Diet starting January 1, 2020: 1 year without buying yarn / overcoming your inner slacker. Who’s in?

I’ll probably buy some more yarn in December.

I’ve already bought a lot for specific projects—including Christmas gifts, though I probably won’t have them ready until Easter because I don’t have enough time.

For specific projects, here’s what I’ve bought in the last two months:

30 skeins of Bravo for 2 dragon lamps
1 yarn cake, 2,500 m, for a poncho
14 skeins of Catania for a Christmas arrangement
16 skeins of Lenja Soft for 2 Glitzer Glotzis

That’s all project-related.

Then there’s my full closet and the drawers as well.

So actually, I should be able to get by for a long time with what I have.

Starting January 1, 2020, I’ll also keep exact track again of what I use and how much.

Best regards, Heike

I’m definitely in.
Starting January 1, 2020, I’ll only be crocheting projects for which I already have the yarn.

Since I’ve already bought yarn for various projects but haven’t
started them yet, I’m sure I’ll be able to stick with this for a long time.

I’m looking forward to lively discussions here during the yarn diet.
