I ordered a Bobbel Advent calendar this year. You crochet a little bit every day until you reach the first knot, so a new color is added each day. (The Bobbel stays in a sealed cardboard box, so you can’t see the colors beforehand.) In the end, you’re supposed to have a beautiful table decoration. I’m curious to see how it turns out.
Hello Ruth, that sounds like a very exciting Advent calendar! And you’ll definitely be very diligent about crocheting up to the knot every day, because you’re curious about the next day and how the colors will develop. I imagine that’s wonderfully exciting. Is the pattern included? Please do show us the finished piece—I’d be happy to see it.
I’ve had a beautiful Bobbel for quite some time now, with colors I put together myself. Now I keep looking at it from time to time, but its time has not yet come. It is still waiting for its purpose.
Yeah, I’m excited too and wait every day for it to arrive. I also think the element of surprise is really motivating.
I had something similar when I was a kid—a “surprise ball of yarn.” It wasn’t an Advent calendar, but a big ball of yarn with little surprises (little plastic animals, erasers, small pens, etc.) wrapped inside. I used to knit like crazy so I could unwrap the next surprise.
I was just checking out Chiemseegarn—look what you’ve done, dear Ruth. You’ve made me so curious that now I’m eyeing this Christmas calendar. Maybe I’ll treat myself to this pre-Christmas gift... :-)
@ruthk
That’s what I call a really great idea—I hope you have a lot of fun with it.
Unfortunately, I already have an Advent calendar that I’ll be working on every day. But maybe I’ll treat myself to this one for next year. In any case, it’s really lovely and exciting for crochet and knitting enthusiasts. :-)
Ruth, the Bobbei Advent calendar really piqued my curiosity and tempted me for a moment, but then reason prevailed—after all, I’ve already committed to a KAL. Of course, I’m also very curious to see what will become of the Bobbel!
Dear Ruth, it’s always nice to share with friends, isn’t it? Anyway, thanks for this great tip :-) Since it’s an Advent calendar and—according to the seller—it’s meant to be a decoration, I think it’ll be in Christmas colors. And with 24 days, where the color changes every day, it’s sure to be an interesting play of colors.
