Whenever my kids go on a school trip, I pack a
little surprise box in their suitcase.
My oldest has been on a school trip to Bavaria since Saturday. I crocheted her a
little pig and brushed it out so it’s nice
and soft.
When she called on Saturday night, she was really happy.
Most of all for my family and myself; I really don’t like making things for strangers, because in my many years of experience, it always ends up being stressful, and I’m not putting myself through that anymore.
It’s clear—I love knitting and crocheting for my two granddaughters the most. It’s always a joy, because their parents really appreciate having a grandma who keeps the kids supplied with knitted items.
I also enjoy knitting for my husband and a friend, because they love it, too.
I don’t have any favorite recipients… I just really enjoy making my “loved ones” happy. That makes it quite varied, too, because everyone likes very different things.
I enjoy making things for anyone I know who appreciates handmade items. My son and daughter-in-law (both in their 30s) swear by their felt slippers. They’ve started ordering them from me for their friends, who’ve admired theirs. I always have to sew leather soles onto the bottom so they’ll last a few years. That makes me especially happy because they’re very critical and picky—everything has to be organic and sustainable.
And of course, I also knit and crochet for my grandchildren. If they’re still too young to say for themselves what they like and what they don’t, I prefer to ask their parents first. After all, there’s no point if the items just sit in the closet or aren’t even looked at or worn. So for my granddaughter Bella, I make doll clothes, and for her brother Jasper, I like to knit a pom-pom hat and scarf every year for the winter. After all, things do get lost sometimes ;-) My youngest grandson, Oskar, loves his merino blankets. They kept him warm even as a baby. Now that he’s almost 1 1/2, they’re still in his luggage whenever they’re on the go or staying overnight somewhere. These merino blankets, which smell like him, are simply a source of comfort. You can never go wrong with a gift like this—it’s just universal.
My best friend is also a fan of my knitted and crocheted items. She’s already received so many pretty things from me and has been wearing them with admiration for years—what more could you want?
My husband specifically orders thick socks or a wool sweater that he wears when he goes fishing. That’s a good thing, because then I know that’s exactly what he wants. I don’t want it to just sit unused in the closet. After all, a lot of work goes into every piece.
I also like to make things for myself, preferably delicate items made of cashmere. I’m actually very spoiled when it comes to softness. If it’s even the slightest bit itchy, it’s a no-go. My daughter-in-law’s eyes always light up when I show her what I’ve made—and most of the time, I end up knitting her the same piece in her favorite color :-) Oh, what a wonderful hobby we have!
Warm regards and a lovely evening to all readers of this thread. Ina
I mainly knit for myself. I also like to give socks as gifts; otherwise, it’s mostly commissioned work. Most of my crochet patterns originated from requests from people in my circle. I don’t have many crocheted decorations at home because, due to our cats and their fur, I generally can’t display much decor.
But I also enjoy making things for charity, like bird nests, or for people in need.
My family—my sister and my niece—usually get a crocheted or knitted gift, and I also really enjoy giving handmade items to friends and coworkers.
Sometimes I knit clothes for my dolls or crochet decorations for my home. For example, crocheted little curtains hang from the small windows in the living room extension, and the new granny-style table runner is currently on the coffee table. For myself, I knit socks, gloves, scarves, hats, sweaters, and jackets. Whether it’s for others or for myself—the main thing is crafting!
Well, I mostly crochet for myself, too. I put my figures and dolls on my wall unit and enjoy looking at them every time. Or when I have guests, they have something to marvel at. I’m also attached to many of them and can’t bring myself to give them away.
I like to crochet for family and friends who appreciate it, or when I need a little gift for someone.
I occasionally take orders from coworkers, but then I have to work more precisely and neatly than usual. After all, I want it to be well-received. Sometimes it just happens by chance. When I show pictures of my work at the office, I often hear: “Oh, I want one of those too—can you crochet that for me…?”
I turn down difficult crochet requests that I can’t manage. I don’t want it to turn into stress—after all, the point is to relax.
