Yarn Mountain Record: Who Has the Most Yarn?

Dear community,
how’s your yarn pile looking? Is it as big as Mount Everest, or just a little hill?

No, mine definitely isn’t record-breaking, but it’ll last for a while in case there’s nothing left to buy and the sheep go on strike, right?

I have the most cotton, then of course some sock yarn—you always need that—and there’s still plenty left over from that thick, cozy sweater, plus three skeins that are supposed to become a long jacket. That’s it.

     

 

It’s not Mount Everest, but I can manage the Kreuzberg in the Rhön :-)))

I definitely have way too much. Tempted by the Schachenmayr factory outlet right around the corner from me—and then Schöller & Stahl a few kilometers further on—my yarn mountain has just kept growing.

For 11 years, unfortunately, I bought more than I used. So there’s quite a bit of yarn to discover in my house. 



I have 220 different yarns listed in my yarn inventory. I wonder how many kilograms of yarn that is?

But the pile is getting smaller, since the factory outlet is unfortunately no longer open. So the temptation is gone.

Right now, I’m crocheting with a yarn remnant from 2018.

I can’t even take a picture of my yarn mountains—yes, there are several ;)—.
In fact, I’m sure I have at least 30 of those large plastic boxes you can buy at Ac*tion (the 100-liter ones), plus about 50 more in the 60-liter and 42-liter sizes, all stuffed to the brim with yarn and thread in my attic...
Yeah, I could open a store...

In my defense, I can say that back when Dawanda was still around (I didn’t switch to Etsy back then because even the name seemed so unprofessional to me *lol*), I actually did sell wool and yarn. I still have quite a lot of that left, since they’re often skeins I can’t even use myself (too thick/too thin, wrong quality/color, etc.).
Maybe I should get back into selling after all… we’ll see…
Otherwise, my kids will just end up inheriting a “fortune” someday…

I totally get where you’re coming from. Back when I was still working with wool, I had (too) much of it, too. Every new idea just had to have the exact yarn or wool I had in mind. But that’s died down a lot. Only sometimes do I still buy something new for a special project.

Meanwhile, though, my fabric stash is piling up. Piece by piece, more fabric is added, and here, too, I have to make sure I keep track of it all. Wool can be stored easily in containers, but fabric needs more space and room to lie flat. But well, better to HAVE it than to NEED it, right?

I think the risk is just much greater with yarn than with fabric. When I want to sew something from scraps—whether it’s patchwork or something else—I tend to work with what I have on hand and plan accordingly.
With yarn scraps, it sometimes happens that you start a project, but then the leftover yarn isn’t quite enough—and adding a different color isn’t an option—so you end up buying another skein to make up for the shortfall. Of course, you don’t end up using all of it, so all that effort was for nothing, and you’re back to having leftover yarn. And depending on the seller and shipping costs, you might have ordered a few extra items just to make it worth it. It’s a never-ending story....

My yarn fits in a deep drawer that belongs to a dresser my father once built.
 

Way too much, in any case… Since I’m moving into a 2.5-room apartment in October and my daughter is renting the house, I now need to consolidate all my stash into my yarn and sewing room, which I’m lucky enough to be able to keep. But unfortunately, not everything is neatly organized by quality—the cotton section looks the best!—so there’s still a lot of work to be done! And the space problem isn’t completely solved yet either. I still have to figure something out by July 23 (the date my family moves in!)… and there are also many, many books that still need to be sorted through and weeded out, but right now I’m in a bit of a slump and it’s all getting to be too much for me!
 

After a few years, this topic has finally inspired me to post a thing or two here, because I have quite a bit to contribute on this subject. My yarn stash has grown to such an extent that I’d have to live to be about 105 years old to actually use it all up. 

 

As for the boxes containing the sock yarn, I have another 2 or 3 that are also filled to the brim. 

Oh my, Martina, that’s much more wool than I thought you had there :-) Is some of Grandma’s wool still in there too? That’s crazy, I can’t keep up :-)

I know what you mean😉. But as we all know, collecting fabric and sewing with it are two different hobbies🤣. 

According to my husband, it’s enough for at least three lifetimes. I see it a little differently, but it’s definitely enough for a few winters.

My husband packed the yarn into several moving boxes and stashed them in different places so they wouldn’t be in the way...

Whenever I go through one of them again, there’s always a surprise I’d forgotten about—and that’s almost like getting new yarn ;)

I’m lucky enough to have a large room all to myself for my hobbies. Unfortunately, some dear people in my life have passed away, so I’ve inherited quite a bit—and you can’t just throw it away, can you? 😉
  Last year, it took me over a week to enter my entire yarn stash into the system. But I have to say, the effort was worth it. Since you can download the inventory as an Excel spreadsheet, I went ahead and did just that and had it all added up🙈. So, I could lay a trail of yarn almost all the way across Switzerland😀 or knit the Alps.
  I have 127 kg of yarn, which is about 329.4 kilometers. That’s pretty crazy. I’m 56 years old and I’d never, ever have to buy any more, but you know how it is😂. Warm regards to all you yarn fanatics and everyone else out there.

Hi, I’ve also taken over the former kids’ room for myself, and I’m glad I did!

I have a lot of sock yarn (since I’m knitting for a bazaar) and plenty of cotton,

and now some merino wool, too. I’m just like everyone else—I have a hard time saying no

when I see yarn on sale, and I sometimes have to give myself a slap on the wrist to

stop myself from clicking “Order.” I, too, will never be able to use up all my yarn in my lifetime

—I’m 74— On top of that, I also really enjoy embroidery, and

I have plenty of embroidery supplies on hand as well. I wish all knitters and crocheters

a wonderful summer of crafting!!!!

Dear kaffee-tante, maybe knitting the Alps in could help slow the glacier melt a bit! My yarn stash would probably almost be enough to protect a small glacier.

Which part of Switzerland are you at home in, with a view of the Alps? When visibility is clear, I only see a few peaks around the famous trio.

This is my first post here, and I have to say that my family thinks the amount of yarn I have might be a record. In addition to the boxes I photographed, there are three more just as big that I can’t reach right now, plus two bags of scraps.

All right, then I’ll come clean too. In addition to what you see, there’s also the contents of an under-bed drawer unit and three large plastic bins up on the shelf...

You can also donate yarn you no longer need to schools and kindergartens. They’re always happy to receive it. I’ve done that with some of my really old stash. There were even leftovers from the very first sweater I ever knitted for myself. “Dukaten” yarn from Quelle in pink and light blue, 100% acrylic. They were large 500-gram skeins. That was back in the mid-1970s. I knitted myself a light blue sweater with a Norwegian-style pattern from it—deer and stars.<\/p>

I’ve actually done that before—a friend of mine is—or rather, was—an elementary school teacher. But the thing is, I really want to make something with all of it. My next project will be a sweater made from Drops “Belle” in off-white, sand, and navy blue. I saw this combination of three colors on a ceramic plate in Malta, and it blew me away. I still had some off-white “Belle” in my yarn stash, but I had to buy the sand and navy blue—and that’s always how it goes: a little goes away, a lot comes in! But that’s nice too!!
