This carnival season is absolutely not my thing. I don't like dressing up, and I don't really like alcohol either. Luckily, my husband is just as much of a grump as I am!
But I'm genuinely happy for everyone who enjoys it :)
For me, Carnival really only lasts from Weiberfastnacht to Ash Wednesday… otherwise, I don’t really notice it. During that time, I do enjoy admiring other people’s costumes and going to the parade every now and then, but the music that goes with it and the goal of getting drunk as quickly as possible aren’t really my thing. As a kid, I loved it…
I’ve never liked Carnival—even as a child, I didn’t like dressing up.
In my job as a childcare worker, the carnival party (which was the highlight for the kids) was the most exhausting day of the year.
I don’t like Carnival either, even though I grew up in a Carnival stronghold (Fulda). As a kid, I loved dressing up. And when my son was little, I still thought it was cute.
But as far as I’m concerned, Carnival could be canceled now. Last year, I went to watch the parade here in town again. It was anything but pleasant to see the teenagers on the floats with beer bottles in their hands, loud music and all.
The only thing I watch every now and then—though I prefer the ones from Düsseldorf—are the carnival comedians. There are really a few good ones.
Well, I’ve always loved going to Carnival, even as a kid in kindergarten (my mom always sewed me great costumes herself). In school (back then it was called the “Lumpenball”). We’d just throw on some old clothes—a nightgown or a pair of pants with a jagged hem we’d cut ourselves, or an old nightcap… it was fun.
I also enjoyed doing that with my kids—dressing them up and always coming up with something creative (I didn’t sew costumes—I can’t do that—but I’d jazz up regular clothes for carnival with sequins or something similar, or make them look like girls with braided wigs, hats, and clip-on earrings).
Later on, I’d always go to the carnival dance with my husband at the time, his brothers, and their wives—all of us together. It was always a lot of fun.
Not anymore, though—there’s too much hustle and bustle for us these days, and things seem quiet here.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to enjoy it yet because I haven’t found a costume for my son that he’d like. He’d like a prisoner costume like this one, but we haven’t really been able to find one yet.
Maybe someone could tell me where I could get a costume like that?
As children, we used to march in the children’s parade on Monday afternoons, usually in costumes our mother had sewn or made herself: one year as cleaning ladies, another year as beauty queens, and the best one of all—as a newspaper kiosk! Of course, that very afternoon was particularly windy… We loved it! Later on, I also sewed a few costumes for our children, since they took part with their school or as drummers. Today, I really just watch the children’s parade on Hirsmontag and enjoy the imaginative costumes! My husband grew up in eastern Switzerland, where there’s no Fasnacht tradition, and even today he can’t really get into all the festivities.
