Temperature Blankets 2026: Can You See the Heat Wave? Can You Sew Temperature Blankets?

Is anyone here currently working on a temperature blanket (i.e., crocheting or knitting one row per day in the predetermined color corresponding to that day’s temperature)? What does that look like with all these heat waves?

Would sewing temperature blankets—with a narrow strip of fabric for each day—be an enormous amount of work?

I crocheted my temperature blanket in 2023; the colors turned out pretty moderate—the winter wasn’t too cold, and the summer wasn’t too hot. I didn’t even need the colors for the coldest and hottest days.

This year, it would have turned out similarly in the winter, but the summer was really intense—you’d definitely see that in the blanket.

I’m not working on anything like that right now. Knitted or even crocheted blankets aren’t my thing. They’re very heavy—you have to like that.

I could imagine a sewn blanket as patchwork. But 365 strips—even if they’re only 1 cm wide—would make a blanket over three meters long. That might be a little unwieldy.

As an alternative, you could use 2-meter-long strips and either add a strip only for every other day or use half the strips for the back. After all, you definitely need a backing for a quilt. The sheer number of seam allowances would be terrible, though. So maybe just use the average temperature for each week and cut wider strips accordingly?

Great, Anja—you’ve been really busy this year. It’s always exciting to see how the color pattern develops—and you can’t influence it at all.

I wouldn’t sew a temperature blanket.

Not a blanket, but I’ve been knitting temperature scarves since 2024—and this year, the focus is actually on yellow, orange, and red tones, and I’ve used the most extreme heat color, pink, twice. Only once in 2025, and not at all in 2024! So, I’ve definitely noticed it—but I’m happy about it, because now I don’t have to move to warmer climes; instead, the warmth comes to me!

And here is the current scarf for 2026, photographed in late June, after the first 38-degree day!

The nice thing is that later on, you really have an entire year in colours laid out in front of you.<\/p>

I was on vacation, so I’m only just reading this post now.

I had an idea about the sewn temperature blanket.

How about cutting the strips with pinking shears? Then place the fabric strips side by side on a thin piece of fabric without any seam allowances and simply stitch them down with matching bias tape. Bias tape comes in various widths. I hope you know your way around this.😊

And then finish the edge with bias tape as well.

Just an idea.
