The first sock is done, yay :-) But now I have to knit another one in 4 days—that’s going to be tough!

Since I think we covered this topic last week—the day before yesterday I saw someone with a blanket around their neck. It surprised me a little, because it was practically a summer day, but it looked good. It was sort of a cross between a scarf and a poncho with huge checks.

I started when I was about 3 or 4 years old. How long ago was that... oh, never mind :-)
For me, it always goes back and forth—sometimes I prefer crocheting, other times I prefer knitting. But actually, I’ve already crocheted and knitted just about everything.

For festive occasions, you can certainly dress up nicely for a change. A delicate, airy stole looks great at Christmas dinner or even for a New Year's dinner.

How do you like it?



It is knitted lengthwise from sock yarn. Along the lower edge, it has an elegant lace pattern (knitting chart included) that gradually disappears upward into wide ribs.

Brand new! A knitted headband that you’ll definitely be able to put to good use very soon. The pattern is easy and can be knitted from a small leftover bit of yarn. I used 50 m of merino wool for mine.

For these little pouches, you’ll need a few colorful scraps of sock yarn and a set of double-pointed needles. They’re easy to knit, mainly knit and purl stitches. There’s also a round of eyelets where the colorful ribbon is threaded through.

Potholders are always a lovely little gift to bring along. Everyone can use them, and they’re small enough that they don’t scream for a “return gift,” because after all, a small token of appreciation shouldn’t give the impression that you want something in return.

Plaid patterns are very trendy. Big checks, small checks—it doesn’t matter. To go with that, I’d like to show you my plaid hat.

Here is the pattern for it.



It is knitted, with the plaid pattern shown in a knitting chart. You’ll need yarn (114 m per 50 g) in two colors and 4 mm knitting needles.
Not necessarily suitable for beginners, but possibly as an introduction to two-color knitting. The pattern is available in 4 different sizes.

For heaven’s sake, I certainly didn’t want to give the impression that I look down on women who choose to focus on their homes and families. I’m a strong advocate for freedom of choice and for everyone being able to live their lives the way they want.
What bothers me more are the societal conditions that often make a life devoted exclusively to household and family a one-way ticket to poverty in old age. This is perhaps even more true in Germany than in Austria, though that could change very quickly here as well.
Fundamentally, I’m a strong advocate for every person—whether woman or man—being able to support themselves, and that’s where how women’s and men’s work is valued comes into play.

I’ll be spending the weekend with hospital visits and with my parents. My father was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago. It’s not life-threatening at this point, but it’s just another step downhill. He’s being discharged on Monday, and my mother just can’t figure out how she’s going to manage everything after that. We’re currently in the process of organizing home health care, though it’s not entirely clear yet how much of it will be needed. It’s a bit of a back-and-forth—on the one hand, she doesn’t want strangers in the apartment, but on the other hand, she’s glad to get help, and it’s different every day anyway.
I have the day off today, so my brother is taking care of things. Nature is calling—I want to enjoy the beautiful fall weather at least for one day.

A little late, but still from the heart: Happy Birthday!

I’m hearing about this for the first time today and didn’t know such a day existed. I’m not a girl anymore—I used to be—but I have this vague impression that we’re currently taking a step backward. That might be a false impression; maybe we’ve really achieved a lot over the decades. Nothing has changed regarding the income gap, and when I look at today’s girls, they seem just as torn as I was back then. I’m also noticing a kind of new Biedermeier mentality around me: back to the cozy home, don’t ask for too much, don’t expect too much. Debates about women are led by men, and on the rare occasions when they’re led by women, they’re token debates about the so-called Binnen-I and other forms of gender-inclusive language.
I’d welcome dissenting opinions, because then perhaps I’m wrong in my assessment.

If you like things a bit more colorful and still want to carry home a pumpkin, here’s a colorful knitted shopping bag. The pattern is a simple slip-stitch pattern – it looks complicated, but it isn’t.

If you’ve been strolling through the market, you may have noticed. Pumpkins are everywhere right now. I’m telling you, with sour cream and dill, they’re a real treat. But first, of course, you have to carry them home, and for that you need a shopping bag.
This one is knitted in an adorable onion pattern that’s stretchy. The bag can be tucked away easily, and when you go shopping, it has plenty of room inside. For this, you need cotton - thick or thin, it doesn’t matter, because both are included in the pattern.

You can easily finish this before Halloween, though it does require a bit of practice since it’s knitted using the double knitting technique. The ghost is shown in a knitting chart.

I’m more into knitting accessories, and out of curiosity I like to browse Pinterest every now and then to see what’s hot right now. You see all sorts of things there that are featured in fashion shows, and of course I check out other stuff too—not just accessories. Anyway, I’ve noticed that these big, oversized sweaters seem to be making a comeback, and not only that—they often have very unusual sleeves, too. How should I describe them… like puff sleeves, but long. Has anyone else seen this, and if so, do you like it?
You also see a lot of asymmetrical designs. A sleeve on one side, sleeveless on the other; slanted sweaters—long on one side, short on the other. Personally, I don’t find the long puff sleeves very aesthetically pleasing, but I could definitely get used to the slanted ones.

On a computer, there are now arrows to the right and left of the image—I think that’s new. But you can still click on the individual images.

I’m bumping this back up because the lovely monifisch sent me a message saying she’s taking the crochet hook. With several exclamation points :-)
