Dear users, dear authors,
You can delight people of all ages with handmade items. Of course, you may need to adjust colors and cuts when crafting for older people. The latest trend may not be quite as popular then. But that doesn’t mean that handmade items or Christmas gifts for older people have to be gray, monotonous, or boring. Our authors use their creativity very skillfully. Would you like to give it a try?

Older people usually still read real books - with real paper pages, not e-books ;-) That means a bookmark can really come in handy, so you can quickly find the page where you left off last time.
Here’s a selection of different crocheted bookmarks:
 Dragon Bookmark
 Ghost Bookmark
 Frog King Bookmark
For all of these bookmarks, you’ll need leftover cotton yarn with a meterage of 125 m/50 g or finer (the finer the yarn, the less bulky the bookmark will be). You can crochet them up quickly in between other things, and make a few extras, so you always have a small gift on hand.

Once you’re retired, you have time for many wonderful things that were previously out of reach. For example, you can lie down on the sofa in broad daylight and take an afternoon nap. This luxury of time alone makes getting older worthwhile.
However, you’ll also need a pillow for that.

You can find the pattern for it here.

A knitted decorative pillow cover in two colors, with the interwoven color effect created by a simple slip-stitch pattern. The pattern is written out row by row, and the colorful design is also shown in a knitting chart.

The slightly older generation—but also the younger one—usually likes things warm and cozy! A truly wonderful matching gift is definitely a hot water bottle with a cuddly knitted cover, like MOLLY here! It fits the standard normal hot water bottle size.
What you need for it is 100 g of yarn with a yardage of 180–200 m/100 g, e.g. Malabrigo Rios as shown here, as well as size 4–4.5 knitting needles.

You can find the knitting pattern here:

Knitting pattern
Socks made from 6-ply yarn - tutorial with tables for all sizes

(To purchase/download, please click the image)

Socks made from 6-ply sock yarn are a little thicker – and therefore warmer – and, most importantly, quicker to knit than socks made from 4-ply yarn, and they are also wonderfully suitable as house socks and bed socks.

This is basically a sock knitting tutorial, shown in detail with photos using children's socks in size 32/33.

All other sizes can be knitted according to the corresponding table information for 6-ply sock yarn .

Included in the download :

  • PDF sock knitting pattern - illustrated step by step (22 pages)
  • Baby sock table for 6-ply sock yarn for newborns up to shoe size 20
  • Sock table for 6-ply sock yarn, children's socks up to adult shoe size 47
We need
1 skein = 150 g (yardage approx. 420 m to 450 m) up to shoe size 44; 200 g – 250 g from size 45 of a 6-ply sock yarn, here the especially soft Christmas yarn color 02 “Mally Socks – Lungauer Sockenwolle” by Ferner Wolle was used, 75% merino, 25% polyamide; gauge approx. 22 sts x 31 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm; set of double-pointed needles 3.5; row counter is helpful; measuring tape, scissors, yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Note:
For 4-ply sock yarns, there is a separate sock knitting tutorial with corresponding tables here in my shop at https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/items/5603/sockenstrick-lehrgang-fuer-4-faediges-garn-alle-groessen-fuer-baby-kinder-damen-herrensocken

And these socks won’t dig in:

Relax socks, 6-ply, in a simple lace pattern - knitting pattern

(To purchase/download, please click the image(s))

These women’s/men’s socks are, above all, comfortable wellness/relax/house socks with a loose cuff in a simple lace pattern, which can also be rolled down – so “nothing digs in”.. Cuff height as desired.

The PDF knitting pattern is written for sizes 36 to 43 and illustrated.

General knitting skills required.
We knit with a set of double-pointed needles. Difficulty level: intermediate

We need 1 skein = 150 g (yardage approx. 420 m to 450 m of a 6-ply sock yarn; here, for the short cuff of approx. 10 cm, used: approx. 70 g for shoe size 39, Lungauer Sockenwolle by Ferner Wolle (cuddly soft), made of 75% merino, 25% polyamide; gauge approx. 22 sts x 31 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm; set of double-pointed needles 3.5–4.0

A blanket is a very warming gift, and sheep’s wool is recommended by naturopaths as pain-relieving (but it does not replace a visit to the doctor!):

Knitting pattern Blanket NATURELL - crocheted border - easy

This knitted blanket keeps you warm while you knit and is pure relaxation and quite easy to knit. Finished measurements: approx. 130 cm x 130 cm.

The PDF short pattern consists of 2 pages and includes 3 images from the image gallery (a knitting/crochet course is not included, but there is a link tip).

These skills are used:
Knitting: casting on stitches, purl and knit stitches, binding off stitches.
Crochet: chain stitches, single crochet, slip stitches, crocheting pieces together.

We need
:
Yarn of your choice, or as used here: Hauswolle by Schoeller+Stahl (60% wool, 40% PAC, 100 g – 200 m, for needle size 3.5 – 4.0); gauge according to the ball band 18.5 sts x 27 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm;

Special recommendation: Biolana by Mondial (100% organic sheep’s wool, 50 g – 100 m, for needle size 4.5 – 5.5), gauge according to the ball band 15 sts x 20 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm. 1000 g in natural white or similar / 200 g in olive green, measuring tape, scissors, yarn needle for weaving in ends, used here: knitting needle size 5.0 (to make the blanket cozier) and crochet hook size 4.0 for crocheting together and edging.

For EVERYONE, young people, older people, and the young at heart

Knitting pattern for a hat in all sizes — also for beginners

Go to the pattern here (click me)

..and if grandchildren ask Grandma whether they can borrow this hat, that's a good sign.

This hat is quick and very easy to knit – well suited for beginners, as there are no increases or decreases to knit. A matching scarf in the same style completes the outfit for cool days.

The pattern is detailed and illustrated for all stitches used and is written for the material listed below for head circumferences from 50 cm to 60 cm. It also explains how to recalculate a gauge, so that it can also be knitted with other yarn weights and in all sizes .

Material: 200 g merino yarn, Schulana Capo Nord used here, 100% merino, 100 g – 90 m yardage, needle size 7–9, size 8.0 knitting needles used here, gauge according to ball band 12 sts x 17 rows = 10 x 10 cm. An alternative yarn in this weight would be, for example, MyBoshi No. 3. We also need: yarn needle for weaving in ends, measuring tape, scissors. Mohair yarns are not recommended for beginners, as they snag and can hardly be unraveled, so they don't forgive mistakes. Otherwise, you can use pretty much any yarn .

Everyone needs tissues. And older people in particular will enjoy such a beautiful and decorative tissue box. A truly lovely gift.

The best part is that it can also be crocheted easily by crochet beginners with basic knowledge and is finished quickly.

Of course, you can also use the favorite colors of the senior woman or man receiving the gift.

Click here for the crochet pattern for the tissue box with hearts and butterflies.

If you liked candy when you were young, you’ll usually still like it when you’re older. If you want to surprise your loved ones with homemade chocolates this Christmas, I can recommend this chocolate box as packaging.

It’s made of cardstock, measures about 17 x 4 x 16 cm, and is designed for chocolates about 3 cm in diameter. The box isn’t hard to make, but you should already have some crafting experience.

Almost every mom/grandma loves cooking or baking for her loved ones. Of course, you need potholders so you don’t burn your fingers.

Gründl Cotton Fun school yarn (100% cotton) 50 g = 115 m yardage
  • Gray approx. 120 g
  • White approx. 60-70 g
  • Small leftover amount of black
  • Crochet hook 3, yarn needle, and scissors

Another great idea—quote from a review:
“I crocheted these little trees as tactile materials for a woman with dementia. Each one is decorated differently and offers plenty of stimulation for both the eyes and the fingers. Easy to recreate and great for using up leftover yarn.”

The Christmas ornaments are really a breeze to crochet, and there are no limits to your imagination when it comes to “decorating” them ♥

Patterns are available for Christmas trees , stars, or bells/baubles .

A pretty Christmas gift that’s always suitable is a pretty cover for paper tissues.

Whether in a handbag or on a small table, this crocheted cover made from a granny square is very attractive and practical.

Crocheted from cotton (e.g. Catania), it only takes a few grams to make a lovely gift in a favorite color or one that matches the colors of the home.

You can find the pattern here.
