Dear Josefa, I guess nobody really likes to talk about abandoned projects. We just quickly push them out of our minds. Just unravel it and return the yarn to its original state. Then you can mentally check off the failed project and won’t be reminded of it by a UFO anymore—and you’ll be open to a new one.
I tried something out the other day for Christmas decorations. I quickly realized it wasn’t turning out the way I wanted. So I unraveled everything and put the yarn back in the box. The yarn was too thin, and now the idea is still maturing a bit more.
After that, I sewed some simple little pouches—that’s when I had my moment of success, and my world is back to normal.
In any case, it’s better to stop before it turns into a never-ending UFO. Then you can turn the materials into something else beautiful.
I have a project lying around here right now. It’s actually finished. But I’m not going to wear it like this. I’ve decided to unravel it. Too bad. But the pattern was terrible. A tunic that doesn’t fit at the neck and is totally baggy. According to the pattern, you’re supposed to gather it with a ribbon… but that totally takes the life out of the piece. That wasn’t clear from the pictures or even from a video. I wanted to try gathering it with a flower, but that doesn’t look good either. Luckily, I haven’t woven in the ends yet. Now it’ll become a pretty shawl for my daughter
Best regards, Marita
Since I design my own patterns, this happens quite often! Yes, sometimes several times a day across multiple projects. That’s just how it is, but it’s all part of the process!
Why wouldn’t you want to talk about it? Sharing experiences is interesting too! There’s no shame in having to unravel something—at least not for me! I’m just not perfect and I make mistakes! Why wouldn’t you talk about it? I just don’t get it!
I know from my own experience that there are lots of people who claim they never make mistakes or act as if a mistake were a crime! Yes, I’ve seen it all before, and I find that totally arrogant!
Mistakes are there to be made—and unravelled! There are worse things!
I forgot to mention that I actually abandoned a project just last week—and yes, it wasn’t the first or only one! So what! That’s just how it is—you never stop learning!
