Dear Community,

There will be another warning drill next week. You know how it goes: Better a little embarrassment on Warning Day and then work on improving it than to fail in a real emergency.

How did Warning Day go in your town in previous years? Did your cell phones and all other warning channels work? Has the system been improved over the years?

Everything went really well here during the last few drills, so it should work this time, too. I used to think these warning days were kind of “superfluous”—I mean, we’d become so complacent, you know? Now I see things differently, unfortunately.

My experiences have varied because I’ve been in different places. In the village, there were even public announcements—they all went off, albeit relatively quietly, but at least they worked. In the nearby city, at least the sirens went off, and last year, when I was out of town for work—nothing. Except for all the cell phones in the classroom. I don’t know if there are uniform regulations for this or if it’s decided on a town-by-town basis? I’ll just have to wait and see.

Hmm… we didn’t hear any warning here—no NINA, no sirens… Otherwise, it’s always worked well here.

It’s good to know—otherwise, you always get a terrible scare when your cell phone suddenly starts blaring at you out of the blue. 

Did everything work for you? It did here for us. But I have my doubts about an evacuation plan in an emergency—that’ll be chaos.

Yes, in theory everything worked great, but I’m still a bit skeptical about how it would hold up in a real emergency.

Martina and I were in town at TK MAXX when suddenly it started wailing from all directions ;-) I was disoriented at first, too, and it wasn’t until Martina said, “Mom, that’s the alert on the phone,” that it clicked for me, and I turned it off right away. But it was really interesting how many people came toward us with a cell phone in their hand, and as we walked out of the department store, the alarm was still blaring from various corners.
