Dear users, dear designers,

it’s starting again.

The UFO project is starting a new round: October 16–23

Anyone who wants to win or defend (all the winners from last time ) the honorary title of UFO King/Queen should finish one or more UFO projects by October 23.
--> Please upload proof photos of the unfinished object and another one of the finished object here.

Become Yarn Emperor/Empress / stick with the Yarn Diet

The Yarn Diet is also still running from September 25 to October 23. The idea is to use up yarn stash without buying new yarn.
Rewards include:
- the title Yarn Emperor or Yarn Empress
- and of course praise / joy / recognition from your partner / family
- starting October 24, you can shop again, just in time for Christmas. :- )

Project preview:
Become Leftovers-Best // using up leftover yarn from
October 30 to November 6
--> This will be exciting; I’ll support the project with suitable promo threads

UFO Kings / UFO Queens
--> The list of the new UFO Kings/Queens + the title defenders will be created here

The winners are:

UFO Kings/Queens

Pe-Ka heroically defended her UFO Queen title by finishing a UFO deer this time, after the vest for her father.
Great job. Click over to her shop; there are even more highlights there.
And the hat for her friend is finished too. Double wow.

Congratulations to Petra vom Shop stjerne61 for the finished door wreath / gift for a Zündapp fan. It turned out really well and was a fantastic title defense. Here’s another highlight for Advent.

Mowi19 was also able to defend her UFO Queen title. Congratulations. The hat for her granddaughter deservedly defended the title. Maybe there will be a pattern for it soon; in the meantime, you can crochet the door-guardian owl.

Title defender RuthK finished the napkins to go with the UFO from last time, the Christmas blanket, which is now complete. Wow. It’s going to be a decorative Christmas at her son and daughter-in-law’s place. Click over to Shop von RuthK if you’d like to discover more treasures.

ChristinaE heroically defended her UFO King/Queen title with the gnome. The gnome is charming. My congratulations. The bath sponge turned out wonderfully too.

**************Yarn Emperors/Empresses

Nina vom Shop ZwergnaseBaer stuck to the Yarn Diet with discipline and may now call herself Yarn Empress and, of course, go shopping again so she can make lots of models for Christmas or / the Christmas market.

Haekeltrulla is not a designer yet, but if she keeps crocheting so diligently, she may soon manage to take that step. Congratulations on becoming Yarn Emperor/Empress. Respect for all those yards of yarn you used up

ChristinaE was also busy, used up a lot, and bought nothing. Respect and congratulations on becoming Yarn Empress and on successfully sticking with the Yarn Diet. Buying knitting needles doesn’t count. :-)

Nadeleule was brave and diligent too and used up a lot of yarn, but didn’t buy anything. Have fun with your new Yarn Emperor/Empress title and shopping for new yarn. Have you already seen the new sweater pattern by Nadeleule?

I need to check one more time, very carefully, about the Wollkaiser title.

If I only place an order and it isn’t delivered until after October 23, does that still count for Wollkaiser?

I admit it, I ordered today, but the Bobbel still has to be wound. And not before the weekend, because my supplier has a lot of orders right now.

Of course, I’m joining the UFO challenge. I have a deer at home that needs new eyes; the current ones look really weird.
Then there’s the Wollkaiser project, which isn’t finished yet either.
And then there’s the hat for my friend. I’m seeing her this Sunday, and I promised her that she’d still be able to wear the hat this winter. And I won’t see her again until February.

Oh, last time I didn’t have any before-and-after pictures, but I think it’s a funny idea.

@Pe-Ka,
so technically that doesn’t count, since you’ve already placed an order. But I’m trusting your own conscience on this one.

Well, if it doesn’t count, I’ll wait for the next Yarn Emperor and sit this one out.

Unfortunately, I can’t take part in “Reste-Beste” because I’ve received birthday orders that have to be finished by November 6. But I do hope there’ll be something like this again, because I even have a project for it that I’ve made several times before. A real leftover-yarn eater.

But I’ll definitely be joining in on the UFO challenge.

Since when was I no longer allowed to buy anything? In October, I only worked from my stash.
3 hats
3 baby booties, and I’m on the last skein of the scarf.
Lots of acorns and 3 snails

Maybe I still have a chance,
but for now I’m heading out to the garden

The deal with the yarn diet was that you work through what you already have, and that no new yarn is bought until October 23 if you want to become Yarn Empress.
If you buy more, that makes the yarn diet absurd.
Anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to do without buying yarn during the yarn diet will just have to wait for the next Yarn Emperor/Empress event.

Anyone who bought more during the yarn diet period can still become Ufo King/Queen or defend their Ufo King/Queen title, provided a UFO is finished this week.

I'm out on that one; I did end up buying yarn again while on vacation.

The UFO project is starting a new round: October 16–23
I still have a door wreath for a Zündapp fan in progress; that's my current UFO.
The lettering and a hanger still need to be crocheted. I'll paint the logo, and then I still have to assemble everything.

Here’s a photo; there still isn’t much to see yet.

So, let others worry about the yarn diet—I actually brought home a big bag of yarn today, but maybe I’ll manage to finish my UFO.

It’s going to be a pair of socks. The picture isn’t quite up to date anymore—I’m now past the heel on sock number 1. I can’t guarantee anything, but I’ll give it a try.

So, if the poncho sweater I just started counts as a UFO, then here’s the current status:

So I actually bought my last skein of yarn back in July. I just checked again because I’m kind of going through withdrawal already. But it’s really true. Everything I’ve been crocheting these past few weeks is made exclusively with yarn I already had on hand, since I’d already started those projects. Wow, I’m really surprised myself. So I hope I can keep this up until October 23.

I’d love to become the Yarn Queen. That would be great. Maybe I’ll even make it to UFO Queen.

Here’s my UFO: It’s supposed to be a cardigan!

Anyone who doesn’t buy—or didn’t buy—any yarn between September 25 and October 23 and instead uses up—or used up—their stash can become a Yarn King or Queen.
Have fun.

Last month, I finally finished the Christmas tablecloth I’d started at the beginning of the year—it was a UFO. Since I had some fabric left over, I wanted to embroider some napkins to go with it, but at first I just didn’t feel like it. Now, though, my determination has kicked in. This is what the napkins looked like just last week: barely cut to size. In the meantime, they’ve been hemmed, and I’m busy embroidering them. (With all this sunny weather lately, the light is great!) I hope to finish them this week.

Now I’m really under time pressure: I can only become Yarn Diet Empress and UFO Queen until October 23, and I had hoped the UFOs wouldn’t have to be finished until the end of the month! I’ll have to see if I can upload a photo of my UFO: my computer is sick, and I’ve never tried that on the MacBook before—we’ll see!

For now, I can’t get the picture to work, so: I’ve had the head, torso, and pointed cap since last winter—they were meant to become a Christmas elf. Maybe I’ll manage to post a picture at some point after all!

The deer is finished now. However, only the eyes were redone. I’ve brought you a before-and-after photo:

Since I’m not quite sure whether that counts, I also took photos of the other two projects that I really should finally finish.

The seat cover, which used up almost 1 KG of my thick leftover yarn. It still needs to be sewn together. That’s the part I like the least.

And the hat for my friend. I found it again at the very back of the cupboard. And it has to be finished by Sunday, because that’s when I’m seeing her.
It works out perfectly that I’ll be able to post a photo of the finished hat on my friend on Monday.

So now, time to grab the crochet hook (this evening) and get it finished.

Okay, I’m back in the game too. I took a look today to see which UFO is urgently waiting to be finished and has been on hold for quite some time.

It’s this one—a hat for my granddaughter:

I should be able to get it finished in the next few days.

I did it!!!!!!!
My UFO is finished—a door wreath for a Zündapp fan.
It took me more work than I expected, but now it can go to its new owner and I’m one UFO lighter :)

Hi,

I’m diligently sticking to my “yarn diet” ;-) and also to my “regular diet.”

Dear Josefa,

how will this work on Monday?
Will you start a separate thread for the Yarn Queen where
everyone can post photos with details of the yarn they used?

Or how exactly should I imagine it?

Best regards, Heike

Dear Heike,
let’s just use this thread here—it’s already gotten off to a good start. :-)
Just post all the info here, then we’ll have everything in one place and can celebrate the winners properly.

ok, Heike :- )
When you’re in the reply window, you’ll find a row with formatting options and other features right above the text box or under “Write a reply.”
  • B = bold
  • I = italics
  • The underlined “U” stands for underlining text
  • Image upload: The small stylized image with a mountain motif and a cute sun, like in a child’s drawing—that’s for inserting photos.
  • Chain icon for embedding links
  • and, on the far right, the icon for lists / bullet points in the text

I’m writing this out in detail simply because questions about it come up every now and then.

Details on uploading photos:

So you click the icon with the mountain and sun. Then you can choose whether you want to upload the image as a file (“upload image”) or from a link (“insert url”). You can drag the image with your mouse and drop it into the small image upload window to upload it (= “drop file here”).
Alternatively, you can click “choose file” and then upload an image from your computer as usual.
Please upload only your own images.

So, I’m done with the hat. I don’t even know why it was a UFO for so long. There really wasn’t that much left to do. Here’s what it looks like now:

With the cute little mouse in the photo, I’ve finally fulfilled a long-cherished wish. :-)

I’m writing up the pattern right now; it’ll finally be available in the shop.

Warm weekend greetings to everyone from Monika

I’m telling you, I’m not going to win the UFO crown this time. I’m currently spending most of my time lying down because I’ve been struck by lumbago. Knitting is out of the question.
Wishing everyone else who’s sick a speedy recovery, and congratulations to all the empresses and queens!

Yay! I have a shot at the title “Wool Empress.”

I bought this yarn on September 17 while on vacation in Canada. And ever since then, I’ve been knitting exclusively from my stash:
hats, a scarf, dishcloths, acorns, shoes, and a few other little things.

All the stores are closed today, so I just have to hold out for one more day.

Have a wonderful Sunday, everyone!

Good morning,

unfortunately, due to a severe lack of time, I wasn’t able to spot any UFO landings, even though at least one is on approach...
But instead, I stuck to the yarn diet (and with that, the first diet of my life) knitted - well (warning: pun *laughs) crocheted - all the way through.
I worked through over 1 kg of yarn from my stash, though I should point out that about 800g of it was yarn with a yardage of 500-550m/100g. And on top of that, I unraveled another 1500m/300g because I didn’t like the result.
I can’t show any of it here because 99% of it has been or is being turned into patterns.
But I’m glad I stuck with it, but I’m also really looking forward to going yarn shopping again tomorrow, which is urgently necessary for the Christmas market.

Best regards and have a lovely day!

Hello everyone and good morning!

As part of my yarn diet, I used up the following yarn:

for my sweater: 11 x 50 gr. Lisa Premium (= 550 gr.)
for Konrad the Pumpkin: 3 x 50 gr. Catania (= 150 gr.)
for my reindeer and parts of the sleigh: 8 x 50 gr. Lisa Premium (= 400 gr.)
for my Christmas table runner: 6 x 50 gr. Catania (= 300 gr.)

which totals: 1,400 gr. of yarn or 28 balls of 50 gr. each.

I’ll upload photos of my crocheted creations tonight after work.

Best, Heike

Good morning
Is it just as gloomy, wet, and chilly where you are?
Unfortunately, I can’t report such impressive numbers for my yarn diet: For the wrist warmers, I knitted up the leftover sock yarn (36g);
the Drachenstrahl has (unfortunately) only used up 113g from a 200g cake, the shopping bag (currently still a WIP) contains 67g of Catania from leftover stock, the shark pot holders have used about 100g of Catania so far, and the half coat-hanger cover, made with 11g of thinner cotton, is just as insignificant as the bookmark I gave away—a pansy. I also crocheted a few grams of Catania to finish off the UFO. Photo to follow!
But I came back from Vienna without any yarn—even though there was a lovely yarn shop just a few steps away from our guesthouse! I just bought some great knitting needles there!
It was a great idea, and I’m already looking forward to the next one—it’s incredibly motivating!
Love, Christina

Well, unfortunately I can’t become UFO Queen because my sweater didn’t get finished.
About the yarn diet:
Didn’t buy anything new!

Used up:
450 g brown sweater
650 g for two asymmetrical shrugs
90 g for crochet socks
60 g for budgies
and so far 550 g for the current sweater

That looks good and sounds good. :-)

You have until 8:00 p.m. tonight to post more success stories and status updates. After that, I’ll hold the awards ceremony.
So, get to work if there’s still a UFO waiting to be finished.

My friend quickly sent me a photo of the hat. I gave it to her yesterday and unfortunately forgot to photograph it.
She is absolutely delighted with it and even wore it to work today.
She also wasn’t disappointed that it turned into a hat instead of a hood.

I didn’t buy any yarn and didn’t have any delivered. But I did send a color request for a gradient cake to my trusted yarn winder. So unfortunately I’m disqualified from the yarn diet. But that’s okay, maybe next time.

Monday, October 23, 2017 at 2:21 PM
Well, nothing happened on my end; I bought yarn, since we were at Kaufring. They had 150g of yarn in a beautiful lime green, the kind I’ve been looking for for so long, and they whispered: "here we are, take us with you"
and just like that, it happened. I didn’t finish any UFOs. Two challenges at once was too much for me.
But I’m looking forward to the next UFO challenge, because it really does motivate you.

Have a lovely afternoon from gloomy, chilly Basel

participation in these activities is voluntary.
If two activities are too many for you, please choose one.

Both activities are repeated regularly, though the Yarn Empress will probably only run again after Christmas.

Wow, how much yarn you’ve knitted and crocheted!!!!!! How many hours a day do you spend on it?
And then there’s housework, kids, shopping, and who knows what else. All I can say is, “Hats off.”

Best regards,

I only crochet in the afternoons, starting around 5:30 p.m., or in the evenings once everything else (housework, kids, etc.) is taken care of. But then I keep going until we go to bed (usually 10:30 p.m.)

Thank you so much for the little crown! But what’s even more important is that my husband noticed I’m working through my yarn stash, so I can buy the yarn cake I’ve had my eye on. (And it won’t be the last one.)
I’m going on vacation next week, so I’ll be able to work through quite a bit more then...
