How long did it take you to learn your crafting skills?

For me, too, it all started in elementary school with needlework classes—sometimes even in the afternoons. That’s where my teacher really put me off the whole thing. Her go-to line was, “You’ll never be able to finish a single straight pot holder in your entire life.”
Three years later, I crocheted my little sister’s first christening gown. With so many siblings, I gradually got more and more into crocheting and knitting. My grandma taught me a little bit of sewing.

Over time, I had a daughter of my own, and she, too, received a crocheted christening gown. It was fun when my niece and I were both baptized together in our christening gowns.

I’ve always been learning new things when it comes to crocheting and knitting, and there’s still quite a bit on my list that I’d like to learn.

That line about the cow has already come up, and I can only agree with it.

February Projects 2024 + January Projects 2024: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group.

Wow, Steffi, what a great Easter egg! I’d leave out the ears, too.
I have no idea how that plotting thing works, but it sounds like quite a bit of work to me.

You’ve crocheted a really stylish blanket there, Mel. Such beautiful colors combined with the white—I really like that.

Darning yarn—what do you do with it?

Oh, Petra, I know what you mean... (laughs). The last time someone told me, “You can surely still use some yarn,” it landed me two big blue bags stuffed to the brim...

You’ve already done some embroidery, but you can also use it to crochet little things or twist cords. You can then use those to wrap gifts, too.

Hello...

Thank you so much, Marion. I just couldn’t say no to him.
Yes, Niklas is going to be a spiral-sock kid. I’ve tried on several pairs of shoes. None of them fit right. But I haven’t given up yet...😉

Thanks to you too, Monika. With his brown hair, he looks completely different than when he’s wearing a hat. Whether he’s wearing a hat or not, when I look at him, the sun comes out.🤩
I’m experimenting a bit now. With pants, the back actually needs to be a little higher than the front. Since his right arm is bent, the sleeve doesn’t need to be as long as the left one.
Well, I’ll get it right eventually.

Hello...

The second outfit is done. It’s made from the yarn I ordered for my jacket…😀

It’s not as easy as I thought… The pattern is based on sizes 50–62, so I have to figure out the right measurements and adjust them accordingly. It doesn’t work that way with shoes, though. Niklas is more of a “sock kid,” I guess 😉

Hello...

Thanks, Andrea. The size is kind of a problem. Doll sizes are too small and baby sizes are too big (sleeves). So I always have to improvise. Right now I’m juggling thicker yarn, different needle sizes, and doll shoe patterns. After all, Niklas needs shoes, too. 😉
I’ve already bought a few patterns here for pants, sweaters, and jackets. I’ll have to tweak those a bit, too. We’ll show you the new wardrobe then.

Tunisian crochet: What Are the Benefits?

I don’t know if Tunisian crochet has any advantages, because I have no experience with it at all. It’s been on my to-do list for years, but I just never get around to it.

Is Afghan crochet actually the same thing?

Crocheting and knitting cable patterns: which version do you prefer?

Knitted cables come in so many variations and look great. But I don’t really like knitting with those auxiliary needles anymore.
I haven’t crocheted a cable pattern yet, but I’ll probably give it a try on a baby cardigan or sweater.

Petra, that looks really cute. 🤗

Show us your homemade Easter decorations!

I’m thrilled to see your amazing decorations here! 👍

It’s giving me all kinds of new ideas. I’ve got some CDs lying around, too. Thanks, Petra.

I would’ve thought quail eggs were very fragile. A very pretty basket, Nina.

Your lace embroidery looks great, Inge.

Actually, I was right in the middle of making my spring and Easter decorations, but then St. Nicholas came into my life. Now there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done that I’ve planned.

Hello...

Thank you all so much. 😊 I was so thrilled when I saw him on the screen.

The sweater is knitted, and the pants are crocheted. The yarn had originally been bought for something else that ended up falling through. Now it was just perfect for the little one.
I don’t even know where to start. I have so many things on my list. He’s already in size 56/62. It’s always a bit of an in-between situation, because in size 56 the legs don’t quite fit, and in size 62 the sleeves are always too long.

But whatever—I’m happy with my little ray of sunshine.

Warm regards
Marlies

February Projects 2024 + January Projects 2024: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group.

Gosh, Anja,

that doesn’t sound good at all, but I understand you very well. Being alone and having hardly any social contact really wears a person down. It’s the perfect breeding ground for depression and illness.
I guess the only thing to do is grit your teeth and fight through it. Better days are coming, I’m sure of it!

We’re here for you—we’ll listen to you and try to support you, to give you strength, so that the sun will shine brightly for you again soon.

A warm hug and lots of love,
Marlies.

Hardworking little helpers: Who has the most yarn?

Reading and crafts ... I would never have thought of that 😂😂😂

I’m missing a room that I can set up to be all “book-filled and wooly.” Just like Petra, everything is scattered throughout my apartment, and of course, I’m always missing the exact yarn I need at that moment...😉

Craft Books / Magazines

Downloads are, of course, a great option. You pick out a pattern, pay for it, and immediately have what you wanted—without having to buy an entire magazine.

But I’ve kept all my old magazines. Most of them are from 1976–77. My daughter was born in January 1977. I did a lot of crocheting and knitting for her.

I only buy new craft magazines in exceptional cases, like for my little doll.

I think anyone who has magazines or books that old isn’t likely to part with them anytime soon.

Hello...

I’m Niklas, and I’m living with my new mom now. They sent me off on my journey wearing nothing but a big, baggy shirt and one of those old-fashioned diapers. Oh man, that was so embarrassing… I’m already a big boy (55 cm).

My mom quickly made me some pants and a sweater so I’d look presentable. She said she “fell head over heels in love” the moment she saw me and just had to have me. Now I’m her little ray of sunshine. Isn’t that great?

I’m sure I’ll get lots more cute things. I’ll show them to you then, too.
For now, lots of love from Niklas.

Crocheting as Therapy: Psychological Benefits

Every kind of handicraft is a form of therapy. I used to be more of an avid crocheter. I only knitted on rare occasions.
Then, thanks to the lovely dishcloth patterns and especially Sonja’s beautiful blankets, I discovered knitting for myself. Since I knit relatively quickly, I get quite a lot done, and it relaxes me (a little more than crocheting).
I recently read in a “Rentner-Bravo” magazine that knitting has even been proven to lower blood pressure.

How to Hold the Working Yarn Correctly While Knitting

I wrap it twice around my index finger (but the other way around than in Inge’s photo). If the yarn is too slippery, I also run it between my pinky and ring finger.

My grandma used to teach me to wrap the yarn around my index finger and also run it under my middle finger, over my ring finger, and under my pinky. I always thought that was horribly complicated.

Baking

Mine is apparently a total loss, according to my ex (electrician), Petra. When I turn it on, it blows the fuses. The glass-ceramic cooktop still works fine.
I have a chicken grill. I can bake in it too, but only small batches. It’s not worth it to bake just for myself.

Combining Colors Effectively

Nautical colors are, of course, a must for a girl from the coast. 😉
I like things to be colorful, but I also really like wearing black—either all black or mixed in with other colors.

Over the last two school years, I’ve had some adventurous color combinations (a yellow blouse, a green, hand-knitted miniskirt, and dark purple knee-high socks). A classmate said to me back then, “Ben, when I look at you, I go blind.” But he survived it just fine...
I’ve also knitted and crocheted colorful pieces for my daughter and little sisters.

Have a lovely crafting weekend, everyone // The final push for New Year’s resolutions

I’m done with resolutions. It’s so depressing when yet another resolution bursts like a soap bubble.

These days, I only make short-term plans. You should live every day as if it were your last anyway. That’s been working pretty well for me for the past year.

Have a wonderful rest of your Sunday.
Best wishes, Marlies

Do you currently have lots of scraps, or did you use them all up for Christmas?

The scrap box is one of those things where I always feel like the contents multiply on their own, even without me doing anything. Somehow, it’s never been completely empty.

dievomdeich’s Birthday / 2024 / Free Patterns as a Gift

Thank you so much for your kind words and greetings. I was really happy to receive them.

@ Marita  No, for me Christmas and my birthday were separate, thankfully. One of my sisters was born on Grandpa’s birthday. She always had to take a back seat because “you never know how long Grandpa will live.” When she was little, of course she thought it was awful.

@ Ina  Congratulations to your husband and all the best. My son’s birthday is today, my granddaughter’s is on the 9th, and my daughter’s is on the 11th.  But I don’t have any contact with them anymore.  When my son was born, my parents and siblings came to visit. One sister (6 at the time) said to me, “Where did you hide the baby yesterday on your birthday?” You can imagine the laughter...

Once again, a huge thank you to everyone who sent congratulations for the kind words and many good wishes.🤗🤗
Best regards
Marlies
