Hello dear all,

Thank you so much to all of you who always take the time to write such kind words to someone on their special day. That alone is already a wonderful gift—strangers giving me their time and words. :-)

Unfortunately, I’ve been doing badly these past few months. Physical decline, an autoimmune disease, kidney failure, a hospital stay, and while I was there I caught a virus. Body & soul reached their limits; I was forced to think about death and had no choice but to face all my fears.
It was, and still is, a hard time; I’m not out of the woods yet. I’m trying to clear space in my head for hope, because I lost it along the way, and that’s a terrible feeling.

During a sleepless night, I started crocheting something—with shortness of breath—because I thought that if I didn’t survive, I at least wanted to have crocheted one more time.
The needlework actually got me through the night.

Take care of yourselves, girls, and enjoy your moments when everything is good.

Special thanks for the words from Schnuckelina ; they truly touched my heart.

Dear Anja,

oh dear, what you’re writing really touches me deeply. After all, we’ve sort of grown close here together, almost like a family.

Sometimes we have to go through such dark times, and that can feel very painful. I, too, have had to grapple with the end of my life. And as you can see, I’m still here. For you, too, after a dark time, the rays of sunshine in life will emerge again and remind you that life is worth living.

Your reminder to enjoy the beautiful moments—I’m so grateful to you for that! Because that’s something each of us needs. We take it far too much for granted when everything is going smoothly.

Dear Anja, I wish you lots of strength and hope so that you can look forward to the light on the horizon again. Crocheting will continue to help you with that.

I send you my warmest regards and am sending an angel your way right now to watch over you!

Monika

Dear Anja, I’d also like to send you my best wishes for a speedy recovery. Give yourself and your body the time it needs. I hope the yarn and the needles help you with that.

Warm regards

Dear Anja,
I wish you a good and speedy recovery! You’ve had to go through a lot, but you’re a strong woman. You can do this, even if it’s a long, dark road.
I made it through, and you’ll be sitting in the sunshine again with your crochet in your hands.
A big hug and warm regards from
Marlies

Dear Anja,

You’ve really caught us all off guard and left us feeling deeply concerned.

We’ve already noticed that you haven’t been commenting here as often. We’ve been missing your cheerful, open, and sometimes funny comments—the ones that made us laugh so often—for quite some time now. But reading in black and white just how you’re doing right now is something else entirely. As Monika so beautifully put it, we’ve grown together into a “family” here, and when one of us is suffering, it affects us all.

Of course, we can’t all come to your home, have tea with you, give you a hug, and say something comforting. But we can all give you encouragement! You shouldn’t feel alone with your worries.

***

Most of us—myself included—have already been through difficult times. I, too, have had to come to terms with my own mortality. A cancer diagnosis at age 43 forced me to do so. I’ve walked through every valley and had every nightmare. Life had lost its color for me, too. But I realized that if I stayed in that valley, I wouldn’t feel any better. No one is going to pull me out—I have to pull myself out.

And that’s what I did. First, I thought about what I could do that would be good for me. I made a list with “+” and “–” items. I then focused on the “+” list and sorted out or discarded everything on the “–” list. By the way, my crafts were also on the “+” list. Everything that brings us joy is good for us—for both body and soul.

Fear drains the body of so much of the energy it needs to heal. You have to accept whatever comes your way and do what you can in every situation. That’s all you can do. So—after you and others have done everything humanly possible—you can let go and turn your attention back to the things on your “+” list.

So every day, I did what I could. I didn’t put pressure on myself; instead, I praised myself for taking small steps. Every day, I did things that were good for me. Over time, those many small steps grew into bigger and bigger ones.

Every day, I focused on things that brought me joy. After all, the body can’t do something enjoyable and worry at the same time—physiologically, that’s simply not possible in our brains.

***

I regained my health. What remains is a certain kind of wisdom that you can only gain by enduring and overcoming hardship. You can’t choose whether or not to take this path. It’s a challenge you’re given in life, and you have to master it. For some, it takes less time; for others, more. Until then, the key is to remain calm, patient, and confident. The human body is programmed to function as well as possible at all times. And to do that, it needs our support through a healthy lifestyle, good nutrition, fresh air, exercise, serenity, and the beautiful things that bring you joy.

Dear Anja, you will find a way out of your valley. Use everything that does you good to get there. By opening up here in the forum, you’ve already taken a step in the right direction. A problem shared is a problem halved. No one has to suffer alone. Even if we can’t ease your pain, we can still be with you in spirit and send you a little of our energy and our best wishes. Feel a hug and a warm embrace from afar.

So, now get to your crochet! Yours is surely already waiting for you! Choose bright, colorful threads ;-)
My sewing machine is waiting for me :-)

I wish you—and everyone who’s currently carrying a heavy burden through life—a speedy recovery.

Warm regards from Ina

Oh my, Anja, I’m truly at a loss for words right now. Get well soon, and a big, warm hug.

I don’t even know what else to write. Dear Ina summed it up perfectly—there are no words left to say. She speaks for all of us and touches us all deep down inside.

Anja, you’re not alone. We’ll get through this together. After dark clouds, the sun will shine again.

Warm regards from me

Dear Ina,
thank you for sharing your story—it made me tear up a little. But that’s a good thing, because it touched and encouraged me.

Above all, thank you for your community—as Moni said—how wonderful it is to be a part of it!

We’ve known each other for a few years now, and together we’ve laughed, praised one another, rejoiced, and shown concern; we’ve given each other gifts, some of us have even had the chance to meet in person, and we’ve shared very personal topics via private messages.

Today I received the good news that I won’t have to go back to the hospital for the time being. My acute viral illness finally seems to be getting better; I got some unexpected and much-needed sleep today. And soon, the actual treatment for my autoimmune disease can begin, and then hopefully things will really start looking up, and I’ll feel more like a person again and less like a patient.

Warm regards—and I’m so glad you’re all here in this community

Dear Anja,
I, too, had to face the abyss a few years ago. Exactly 5 years ago now, I had to undergo surgery, chemo, and various other treatments. I knitted my way through chemo. Among other things, I made a scarf and a hat in carnival colors. That was my statement against the disease. And along the way, I managed to bring a smile or two to the faces of other patients sitting around me during therapy sessions.
All the best and woolly greetings
Irene
