Darning yarn—what do you do with it?

Yeah, I know, darning socks. Or is this not even darning yarn for socks?

But what else can I do with my yarn?

Three inherited craft cases (Petra, I’m sure you can use all of this) and my own stash.

Now I’ve stuffed them all into a jar

And put the lid on so nothing gets dusty.

So, it’s all tidied up now. But what can I do with it?

So far, I’ve used it to make the eyes in embroidered pictures, or the arms on my snowman

Do you have any ideas or suggestions for me?

Have a great start to the week

Petra

Oh, Petra, I know what you mean... (laughs). The last time someone told me, “You can surely still use some yarn,” it landed me two big blue bags stuffed to the brim...

You’ve already done some embroidery, but you can also use it to crochet little things or twist cords. You can then use those to wrap gifts, too.

Gift ribbons / bows—that’s an idea. I’ll let that sink in.

Yeah, I get asked that so often. There really are some little treasures in there, and I’m happy that people think of me before everything ends up in the dumpster. But when I found this yarn again in my mom’s sewing box, I was actually a little startled.

I know what you mean.
I use thin yarns like that as an additional thread for things like the heels and toes of socks. Or for knitting or crocheting small items where the main yarn is too thin.

Woolly greetings

I once used it to crochet around Christmas ornaments—it turns out really delicate. When I bought an old craft basket once, it was full of this yarn. I also used it as a secondary thread when I was crocheting little baskets—I’ve used up quite a few meters of it.
In this case, I had several small scraps in different colors—one acrylic thread and two darning threads used side by side. When one thread ran out, I’d just tie on a new one and keep crocheting.
Just as it comes, a colorful mix. I like it, and I got rid of it without throwing it away. This also works really well with old overlock thread cones—except they just don’t run out as quickly.

I use it to embroider faces on teddy bears and the like. Since it can be split, it’s ideal for the different areas of a face

Best regards, inge

I use mine on the loom for tablet weaving 😊
I always stretch the whole ball onto the frame. It works really well.... It makes really fine, super pretty bands. I have a few of them lying around here. Mostly they’re those tiny “balls” with a very fine sheen. I just love them.
