Dear users, dear authors,
Do you find crocheting or other forms of handicrafts therapeutic in the sense that they help you relax?

For me, definitely. When my husband got sick, our lives changed overnight. When he was first diagnosed, we assumed he didn’t have long to live—that’s something you have to process—and even now that he’s “only” in need of care, everyday life looks completely different.
We both had to figure that out first—not just practically, but emotionally as well—and that’s where crafts really helped me.
I can’t go jogging or shopping for hours on end; I usually have to be here, and it really starts to feel like the walls are closing in when you’ve spent almost your entire life before that constantly on the go. Reading is fine, no question, but sometimes I just need to do something with my hands, so I’ve taken up crafts again. First I knitted socks, then scarves and hats, and after all the closets were well-stocked and all my friends were well-provided for, I switched to crocheting and now make lots of little animals and other things—bags, temperature blankets, sweaters, and so on.
First of all, it’s a wonderful way for me to unwind and clear my head as I sit there counting the stitches, and it’s also satisfying to see the ball of yarn getting smaller and smaller until, eventually, a finished piece emerges. It relaxes me immensely.

Crocheting alone as therapy is only half the story. There are many other forms of handicrafts you can do without even picking up a crochet hook. For me, sewing—just like creating sewing patterns and embroidery designs—is very often therapeutic; I can immerse myself in it so completely that I no longer see or hear what’s going on around me.
I have periods every now and then when I can barely walk, so I try to keep myself busy at home. The activities I mentioned above often do a great job of distracting me from the pain and so on.

Best regards, Inge

Hello.
Well, I absolutely agree, but anything that takes your mind off things has therapeutic benefits.
For a brief moment, you’re in another world, far away from all your worries and troubles. That helps immensely.
However, whether it’s always so relaxing when you’re crocheting an ear or something for a tiny figure and I sometimes don’t even know where to hold this tiny little piece anymore, that doesn’t have much to do with relaxation for me. But maybe it’s just me...

Absolutely. When I sew, knit, or crochet, I have to be fully present. I have to concentrate. Then I don’t think about my illness.
Besides, it’s nice to see something take shape under my hands. Maybe I can even bring joy to others with it.
That makes me happy, too.
Best regards, Marita

Every kind of handicraft is a form of therapy. I used to be more of an avid crocheter. I only knitted on rare occasions.
Then, thanks to the lovely dishcloth patterns and especially Sonja’s beautiful blankets, I discovered knitting for myself. Since I knit relatively quickly, I get quite a lot done, and it relaxes me (a little more than crocheting).
I recently read in a “Rentner-Bravo” magazine that knitting has even been proven to lower blood pressure.
