This pattern is almost suitable for beginners—the hardest part is joining the loop in the round. Everything else is very simple; you only need knit and purl stitches.

Hmm, how should I explain this? Basically, it’s true—whether you’re crocheting or knitting, you have a long strand of yarn that you use to form stitches. It’s more about the type of stitches. For example, if I knit the entire piece in knit stitches, I end up with a very uniform piece that has no holes and no special pattern either. Lace patterns add a bit of variety and are therefore often a little more exciting to knit (or crochet, depending on what you prefer). They also often look a little more “artistic,” which then satisfies the crafter’s ego :-) In the summer, people like to wear tops with lace patterns because the wind blows through them, which is more comfortable in the heat. In the winter, lace patterns aren’t as popular—people might prefer something denser that keeps them warmer. Maybe that’s also why lace patterns are often talked about in the summer.

Is it the part between the asterisks that’s causing trouble? To increase with half double crochets, work 2 half double crochets into the same stitch, then work 1 half double crochet into the next stitch. Then repeat the whole sequence 3 more times (so a total of 4 times for the part between the asterisks). After that, you move on to the next section, and once you’ve done that, there should still be 7 stitches “unworked” up to a marker that was apparently placed in the previous row.
