Openwork Pattern Question

Dear users, dear authors,
Why are openwork patterns so popular in patterns when, in principle, every crocheted/knitted piece is basically an openwork pattern—i.e. made of stitches?

Hmm, how should I explain this? Basically, it’s true—whether you’re crocheting or knitting, you have a long strand of yarn that you use to form stitches. It’s more about the type of stitches. For example, if I knit the entire piece in knit stitches, I end up with a very uniform piece that has no holes and no special pattern either. Lace patterns add a bit of variety and are therefore often a little more exciting to knit (or crochet, depending on what you prefer). They also often look a little more “artistic,” which then satisfies the crafter’s ego :-) In the summer, people like to wear tops with lace patterns because the wind blows through them, which is more comfortable in the heat. In the winter, lace patterns aren’t as popular—people might prefer something denser that keeps them warmer. Maybe that’s also why lace patterns are often talked about in the summer.

I think lace patterns give crocheted pieces a better drape. A pattern made of double crochet or even single crochet often turns out a bit stiff.
And as I said, it’s just airier in the summer.

Hi Josefa,
I agree with what’s been said so far and would like to add:
Lace patterns can be quite a challenge and are often true works of art—not mass-produced items. They’re sure to be admired.
Best regards, Traudelina

Lace patterns allow you to create designs that wouldn’t be as easily recognizable using just knit and purl stitches.

The holes in the fabric also provide a nice contrast when using coarser yarn.

OK, thanks for your answers. Now I understand it a little better.

Receiving admiration is apparently a major need in the world of handicrafts?

Well, admiration is also a kind of “reward.” If we were paid only the minimum wage of 8.50 EUR per hour for our crafting, our handmade pieces would be unaffordable.

Well, hopefully you also feel a sense of pride, like, “I made this with my own two hands, and it turned out beautifully.”

But Josefa - what kind of question is that? (laughs)

I admit, I’m proud when I finish something I’ve knitted or crocheted myself and am admired for it.

I guess everyone here feels the same way, r i g h t???

Kind regards, Marion

Of course, a piece made with your own hands is truly a source of joy and, naturally, can make us feel a little proud (after all, no one sees how many times we’ve had to rip out our knitting or crocheting along the way!)
