Hardworking little helpers: How was Pentecost?

Dear Inge,
warmest congratulations to you and your husband on your wedding anniversary. That’s quite an achievement!

Pentecost was a bit of a mixed bag. Since I was at home, I “got to” “enjoy” the new tenants above me. They don’t seem to be the most skilled handymen, because it always sounded as if whatever they were hammering together was about to fall apart again. There was a terrible rumbling, and my lamp was shaking. It’s been going on like this for two weekends now, and there seems to be no end in sight...

Toilet paper roll hats: why are they so popular?

Back in the day, it was the “Püppies”; today, there are lots of pattern books. I’ve even crocheted a lighthouse for three toilet paper rolls.
My “Elsbeth” has been sitting here for almost 45 years now. I got her from my grandma back when we moved into our first apartment. She’s named after my aunt, who used to churn out these little dolls by the dozen.
Every now and then, I dust off “Elsbeth,” wash her dress, and give the doll a thorough cleaning. Unfortunately, the little hat that came with her has been lost over the years.

It’s time for a thorough overhaul again...

Circular knitting needles

Circular needles are handy because you can use them not only for knitting in the round but also for knitting back and forth. Especially with large projects, the weight isn’t all on one needle—it’s distributed evenly. Circular needles are also ideal for knitting on the go.
Except when using a set of double-pointed needles, I only work with circular needles.

Chainless foundation

With the foot-loop stitch, you skip the sometimes very long foundation chain of stitches and start working on the first row right away. For filet curtains, for example, you use this technique for the scalloped edges.
You work the next stitch out of the foot loop of the previous stitch. There are many tutorials that explain this step by step. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a great technique.

The Rhön...

Dear Inge,
you’ve taken some lovely photos. I love the sweeping view of the countryside. And as the saying goes: “May has arrived, the trees are budding.” You’ve captured that beautifully.

Sayings and Words of Wisdom

Dear Inge,
I can relate all too well to what you’ve been through. Reading this took me back to the past and really shook me up. I, too, have three children and was married to a psychopath—a two-faced bastard. Outwardly, he was the friendly, cheerful guy, but woe betide anyone if he came home...
If my two older children hadn’t gotten the police to take my youngest and me out of the house that night, that bastard would have killed me.
So after six weeks in a women’s shelter, I was happily divorced. But he kept terrorizing me for a good 15 years after that. Now he’s with someone who doesn’t have much to laugh about.
As Grandma always said, “everyone gets what they deserve.”
Best, Marlies

Elegant outfit: what are you wearing?

Generally speaking, I have a pair of chic black pants that I pair with a top appropriate for the occasion. For summer, I have white pants with a matching top.
I rarely wear dresses or skirts anymore. When I was young, I wore nothing but dresses or skirts—and I had some really chic ones back then.
I think it’s a shame that people don’t place as much value on stylish clothing these days and show up to every occasion in a T-shirt and ripped jeans.

Stirrup pants are back in style

"Horizontally slim" (great expression!) applies to me too, but I think they make you look slimmer. Of course, with the right top—and not exactly with a bare midriff...grin.

Ice Saints in May: How’s the weather where you are? Are you doing well?

Fruit blossoms are always a bit of a challenge. You just can’t get the irrigation right.
On Sunday we had heavy hailstorms here, but luckily not in the Altes Land, since the cherry trees are in full bloom there.
Today it’s rainy and stormy, with a bone-chilling cold to boot—in other words, everything you don’t want in May.

Chenille Wire

Regular pipe cleaner wire is even stronger and sturdier than chenille wire. Chenille wire, on the other hand, is more flexible and much fluffier, and it comes in a wide variety of colors. I like to use it for figurines or animals that stand on their own. I don’t use it for things that small children play with.
It provides flexible support in crocheted flower stems.

Sayings and Words of Wisdom

I, too, grew up with lots of wisdom from my grandma and have passed it on to my children.
Once, I broke the “law of the laundry.” My uncle died—he had jawbone cancer—and I felt like I was to blame for his death. I’ve never done laundry between Christmas and New Year’s again.
So many things were and are dismissed as superstition, but I believe in them.
Grandma always told stories about the “woman with the second sight.” She always predicted things. Two examples: “The bride will wear black”—the fiancé had a fatal accident the day before the wedding; 2: “Klaus will come home on a handcart,” Klaus had fallen from the apple tree—which was still tall back then—while picking apples and broke his neck. He was brought home on a handcart.
Grandma spoke Low German, so it sounds a little different in that dialect.
However, this woman didn’t use her gift to make money, and even when asked, she couldn’t say what would happen. It was always an “intuition” when such a prediction came.

When I was younger, I used to worry that I, too, had such a “gift” (which felt more like a curse to me). Someone would die whenever I saw the person who had most recently passed away. This could happen while I was shopping or anywhere else, and it terrified me. Thank God that phase has passed and it only happens very rarely now, but when it does, the shock is all the greater.
There are people who thought I was “a little off my rocker,” but unfortunately, that’s really how it happened—even though I would have gladly done without it.

I place a lot of value on sayings and words of wisdom. There’s a lot of truth to those so-called “farmers’ rules,” too. There’s so much between heaven and earth that you can’t explain, but it happens.

Best regards, Marlies

Supporting Each Other Online on Crazypatterns

Dear Pinky,
my sincere condolences. Losing a loved one is a life-changing experience that takes a tremendous amount of strength. Even when you think you can’t go on, it eventually gets easier, and you learn to live with it.
It’s especially hard during the pandemic because so many people aren’t allowed to be there to support you. (Often, you’re not even allowed to attend the funeral because of the regulations.)
Perhaps the support of the CP family will offer you a little comfort.
I wish you lots of strength during this difficult time and am sending you a hug.
Best wishes, Marlies

How are you all doing right now?

Well, Inge, officially, our neighbors aren’t even required to inform us. Data protection… And do you have any idea how difficult things would get around here if I called the police? There’d be even more trouble than there already is.
So I’m just staying in quarantine. I can also get to the mailbox via the patio. If I have to go through the hallway, I only do so with a face mask, gloves, and hand sanitizer.

Best regards, Marlies

How are you all doing right now?

I’m pretty anxious right now. There’s COVID-19 in the apartment next door, and people are bustling about in the hallway, basement, laundry room, and garden. So, of course, I’m staying inside as much as possible, even though we’re back to having bright sunshine. But I’m being very careful.
I have another COVID-19 test scheduled for tomorrow. I bought a new diamond painting design and now have plenty to keep me busy.

Stay healthy, everyone.

Gobelin embroidery

Gobelin embroidery is done using half-cross-stitch. Important: Don’t knot the threads on the back, because that will show through later.
You can use it to make things like pictures, pillows, table runners, etc. I usually
buy ready-made kits that come with pre-printed fabric, thread, and a picture frame.

Weekend :-)

I’m heading to the Alte Land tomorrow to visit the birthday boy. On Monday, he wants to go to Bremerhaven again. It’s too crowded along the Elbe, too—it’s no fun to go for a walk there.
Then I can also take a look for a frame for my DP picture while I’m in Stade.

Wishing you all a wonderful, relaxing weekend.

Handbags: Which ones do you like best?

My handbags need to have plenty of space for all my odds and ends. I pretty much always carry my camera, spare batteries, memory cards, and a USB drive. Sometimes I bring my tablet, too.
Then, of course, there also has to be room for my handwork or, every now and then, a book (when I’m going to the doctor).
Since the pandemic, hand sanitizer, spare masks, and gloves have been part of my bag’s contents.
An adjustable shoulder strap is important so I can sling it over my shoulder and have my hands free.

Whenever we’re heading out, it’s always, “Do you always have to take your travel bag with you?” and then, once we’re on the road, “Surely you still have room for the camera”…

How do you do it? Starting a new ball of yarn?

When crocheting, I weave in the ends as long as it doesn’t disrupt the overall look. Otherwise, I use the magic knot. I actually always use that when knitting.
