Petra, the Rhön is a low mountain range located north of the Main River; it borders the Thuringian Forest to the north and the Franconian Forest to the east. It takes us about an hour by car to get to the heart of the Rhön. As a child, I went to camp at Bauersberg, and the city of Schweinfurt had a school camp there. You’ve surely heard of Bad Kissingen and Bad Brückenau; Kissingen lies at the southern foot of the Rhön, and Brückenau is right in the heart of the Rhön. Thanks to its stimulating climate, the Rhön is a destination for people with lung conditions, but other ailments are also treated there. For me, the Rhön has always been a place where we can recharge and relax after leaving the city. Also very interesting and worth seeing are the two moors in the Rhön—the Black Moor and the Red Moor. Check them out online; it’s a great area to unwind

Thanks for your detailed description. I’m more familiar with our Swabian region—or rather, with the Swabian Alb, which is right on our doorstep, just like the Rhön is for you. We already have some very beautiful vacation destinations here in Germany. 

Dear Inge, thank you so much for the lovely photos and the geography lesson! I’m ashamed to admit that I don’t know Germany very well: We went hiking in the Allgäu once; many years ago, I visited the heath and the Baltic Sea; I’ve been to the Black Forest once or twice; and three years ago, we got to know the Kraichgau on a culture and wine tour. I know Munich quite well, Hamburg, Berlin, Paderborn, and Freiburg a little, and I have only very vague memories of Lübeck and Cologne…

Thanks for the lovely photos, Inge. I love the Rhön, too, because I was born there—in Fulda. We used to go on Sunday trips out into the countryside there often. When I was 11, I unfortunately moved to northern Germany and really missed the mountains. Back then, I felt just like Heidi in the movie.
