Dear users and authors,
What is jute and what is it used for?

Jute is mostly used as packaging material—think of the well-known jute sacks—but it’s also made into rugs. Jute has the advantage of being a raw material that breaks down all by itself, because it is very sensitive to moisture; if it gets damp, it immediately starts to go moldy and then smells very strongly musty.
I sewed a cover for one of my yarn boxes myself from a jute sack.
In the lower one, I have little pouches for storage. Mixed with cotton fabric, you can sew great decorations and other items.

Best regards, Inge

I crochet a lot and often with jute yarn, the “golden fiber”...
Warm regards

I don’t like jute at all. I think it’s scratchy, and it reminds me of the old days, of those coal sacks.
You used to get your loose coal delivered in those sacks—dirty and dusty.
As I’m writing this, I can practically feel that coal dust in my nose.

Jute is a really great material. The fiber is biodegradable and stands for sustainability. Because of its durable nature, jute is also used to make packaging materials, sacks (nowadays mostly for coffee), and as insulation, etc.

@mmns—yes, what would traditional espadrilles be without their jute soles?

And jute fiber is making a comeback, especially in interior design, because it embodies that trendy natural look. For example, I wouldn’t want to be without my gorgeous, large jute rug anymore… a sturdy gem in my home…

I also use jute often in the garden… and, of course, in my crochet workshop… ;-)

“Everything will be jute!” I always say.
