Elegant outfit: what are you wearing?

what do you wear when you want to look elegant?

Is it too early to plan for the post-Corona era?

It always depends on the occasion—how elegant it should or needs to be. What I noticed two years ago on White Sunday at my youngest granddaughter’s First Communion is that elegance isn’t really in demand at such *major* holidays. 98% of the people were dressed in a sporty-elegant to casual style—something that would have been unthinkable when I had my First Communion (1961). I don’t place much value on elegance in the strictest sense—it has to suit you and should highlight the kind of person you are; anything else, in my opinion, just looks like you’re *dressed up*.

As Inge mentioned above, there are actually very few occasions left to dress elegantly. I used to dress up when I went to see a musical. Today, people just wear jeans.

Comfort is often the priority, so elegance doesn’t really fit in. At the last wedding I was invited to, everyone was dressed really elegantly. Everyone was wearing something special (not something you’d wear every day)—a jacket and tie—and I thought it was really lovely. I finally had the chance to wear my little black dress again. I thought it was absolutely lovely.

As for the post-COVID era... at Christmas, we all dress up especially nicely, but that has nothing to do with COVID. 

I’m really looking forward to an opportunity to finally wear something more elegant again—for example, for a concert at the Lucerne Culture and Congress Center or an opera in Zurich. These are very special occasions, and that’s when I break out the little black dress with a lace shawl. Things aren’t quite as formal at our city theater—there, you see everything from jeans and a sweater to a chic dress. For a performance at this venue, I like to wear elegant (wide-leg) black pants with a special blouse or, sometimes, a sweater with subtle glitter.

Generally speaking, I have a pair of chic black pants that I pair with a top appropriate for the occasion. For summer, I have white pants with a matching top.
I rarely wear dresses or skirts anymore. When I was young, I wore nothing but dresses or skirts—and I had some really chic ones back then.
I think it’s a shame that people don’t place as much value on stylish clothing these days and show up to every occasion in a T-shirt and ripped jeans.
