Birthday gift

Oh Andrea, what a special gift you received from your kids! I can imagine you were absolutely thrilled.
Your Advent calendar book sounds interesting. You’ll be surprised, and you can surprise someone else, too.

What are you cooking today? Part 2

Today we had a vegetable mash made from potatoes, carrots, and Brussels sprouts.
Next up are tomato soup and pumpkin soup.

I’m slowly running out of ideas for pureed soups. My husband still can’t eat anything solid because of his dental surgery. I’ve already pureed ingredients that I never would have thought could be turned into soup.

Dear Ina,
my husband still raves about the sauerkraut and pickles his mother used to make. I canned the tomatoes for him this year. Let’s see if he likes them.

Canning for the Modern Homemaker

According to my old notes (based on Grandma’s recipes), green beans were preserved for 2 hours at 100 °.
In the new Weck preserving book, string beans are listed as 120 minutes at 100 °, princess beans the same, and sweet-and-sour green beans 60 minutes at 100 °.
I hope this helps you, dear Monika.
Best regards, Narlies

What are you cooking today?

For the past few weeks, we’ve been having nothing but pureed soups. My husband is having trouble with his upper dentures, and the dentist just got back from vacation. We have an appointment on Friday for gum treatment. So it’s still all kinds of soups.
I’ve already tried various combinations. Today we had pumpkin soup with apples, root vegetables, bell peppers, and sweet potatoes. That made almost three liters.
Before that, we had potatoes, root vegetables, celery, and fennel. Another mix was potatoes and beets.
We also had Labskaus, a bit more liquid than usual, and tomato soup made from our own tomatoes.
It usually makes three to four meals, but it can sit in the fridge for a few days without going bad, so we have some variety.
Tomorrow it’s kohlrabi, root vegetables, and potatoes, and after that, rutabaga and the like are on the menu.
I’m turning into a total soup nut… lol.

That looks great, Ina! Unfortunately, we didn’t have any bell peppers or cucumbers this year.
The last tomatoes are ripening in the greenhouse, and the leeks are doing really well there, too. So I can take my time harvesting them.
Best regards

I was familiar with seamed raglans. It was new to me that you can also knit them from the top down.
I don’t think I particularly like either method, but I’m not giving up yet.

You’ve all conjured up some amazing things again.

Sandra, where do you always get these great ideas for kids’ birthday parties? I’m constantly amazed.

Anja/Monika: I’m currently at war with raglan sleeves—both top-down and bottom-up. It’s sitting in the basket for now until it starts to annoy me again that I can’t get it right.

We were invited to a 70th birthday party. Five years ago, I crocheted “Grandpa Rolf.” This time, there was a birthday cake.

His partner's birthday was the next day, and she received something “sweet,” nicely wrapped.

Best wishes and get well soon to everyone who’s sick

Canning for the Modern Homemaker

Dear Ina,
there are also dried chili peppers in the pickle jars. An acquaintance once said, “Your pickles really pack a punch twice over”…

The tomatoes are ripening like crazy. I’ve already given some away. Now I’ve pickled two jars. Let’s see how they taste. I’ve also been thinking about tomato sauce. That’ll probably be next on the list.

Harvest from July 28, 31, and August 2.

@ Everyone I’d like to give you all a big shout-out for all the beautiful things you’ve been crafting lately! I’m always amazed.

Petra, have you tried carefully pulling at it while it’s spread out to see if the dropped stitch might become visible? Then you could secure it. It worked for me.

Topics in the newsletter

As a “reader only” of the newsletter, I use it as a starting point when searching for a specific pattern.
If I like one, I then look to see who offers something similar that I might like even better, or where the price suits me more. Sometimes that has also led me to discover something completely different in the seller’s shop that I ended up liking even better.  That has worked well for me so far.
Along the way, I’ve often found offers in the broad-ranging newsletter that I wasn’t even looking for. Even if it was just to put them on my favorites list for later use.

Personally, I don’t necessarily see the newsletter as advertising. Designers can advertise with free patterns.
Before I buy a pattern, I first check whether something free is offered. That lets me see how the patterns are structured and whether I can get along with the style. If something appeals to me, it can easily turn into an “ongoing relationship.” But it can also be that I chose a pattern because I was totally enthusiastic about it, and then I couldn’t get along with the free “sample item” at all. Then I skip the purchase, even if I thought the product was great.

On this occasion, my thanks go to all designers who offer free patterns and thereby bring buyers a lot of joy, or at least provide help in making a decision. I appreciate your work!

Whether such a specialized newsletter, as requested here, is feasible is something I personally dare to doubt. To me, that sounds like so much effort that CP probably cannot manage it.

Best, Marlies

How satisfied are you with Crazypatterns?

CP is a great resource! You can almost always find what you’re looking for—and even things you weren’t even looking for.
The community here on the forum is one of a kind. Chatting with like-minded people isn’t just a lot of fun—you’re constantly learning new things, too. For almost every question, someone has an answer or some tips ready.

The only thing missing is the ability to edit posts, because sometimes you make typos or think of something else later.

Canning for the Modern Homemaker

A huge thank you for your tip, dear Ina!!!

Since my husband had “disposed of” my canning pot, he’s now given me the Tescoma set.

I’ve already been hard at work—even in this current heat—but homemade is just homemade. I learned that from my grandma.

My jars from yesterday

I hope I managed to make them just like “back in the day.”

Swap Package No. 3/2022 has started

You’ve picked out some beautiful treasures, Monika. I’m sure they’ll turn into some adorable little things again.

I like the idea of the weight buffer.

A live wool package show… what a great idea. I can practically see the wool dancing right in front of me… grin.

Where I live, wool is only available at discount stores. The selection is very limited as a result. Luckily, I found “Wollhimmel” in the neighboring town. That’s where I get my cotton at a very reasonable price. The nearest specialty stores are in Stade.

I’m curious to see what else you’ll find. Keep having fun.

Doll updates: how are your dolls doing?

Yesterday I tried to jazz up Rieke’s little pink-and-gray dress with an apron. I’ll probably have to use filet yarn for that. Catania yarn would make it too bulky.

Marion, Finn looks really sharp in his new hat.

Ina, you’ve crocheted a great collection for your little dolls. I used to do that, too. I don’t have a Barbie anymore—my son took hers at some point. For whatever reason...

Your grandkids play with the little dolls, and at my place, my friend rummages through the dresses and stuff. That’s just how it is with big and little kids... lol.

A “Barbie merman costume” is a great idea, Ruth.

I’m still wondering whether the babies need diapers or if “regular” underwear will do, Monika.

Great snapshots, Petra and Marion.

Andrea, your little mouse is sooo cute! How small is she? I really like the Ta-Tü bag, too.

I’ve put my dress-making on hold for now. I need to finish a few projects I started but had to set aside.

My friend really likes the shopping bag from my test crochet. If I want to keep mine, I’ll probably have to crochet a new one.

Wishing you all happy crafting!

Planting the Balcony

What you’ve planted looks great. I find your two “plants” especially interesting, Gabi. Not everyone has something like that… lol.

I’ve let my little garden corner grow over again. Unfortunately, there’s no point in planting anything because all the cats in the neighborhood are using that very corner as a litter box. My neighbor tried it, but gave up pretty quickly. Now it’s overgrown again and just needs to be mowed.
