Cluster double crochet: how do you make these stitches?

what are cluster double crochets, and what are they used for?

Crochet at least two, but usually 3 or 5 double crochets into the same stitch. However, don’t finish crocheting the individual double crochets; instead, leave the last loop on the hook. This means that after the first almost-finished double crochet, you’ll have two loops on the hook—leave it that way and start the second double crochet. Once you’ve crocheted all the double crochets, you’ll have that many loops plus one on the hook (so 4 loops for 3 double crochets). Then you pick up the yarn and pull it through all the loops at once. The cluster stitch is now complete. What do you do with it? It’s just a crochet pattern...

These cluster stitches used to be found on almost every baby hat and dress. I guess they were in style—at least according to the old needlework magazines.

I’ve also made little blankets (for dolls and babies) using this technique.

When crocheting bobble stitches, you need to make sure you work them in a wrong side row, because the bobble that forms bulges toward the back. Then it will be on the front side, where you want it.
