That’s doing me a world of good today. As is so often the case in life, the beautiful and the terrible are so close together. My best friend (I’ve written about her serious illness before) passed away today at the age of just 57.
It’s soooo important to live each day with true awareness.
Now I’m going to open a bottle of champagne and reflect once more on all the beautiful moments from her life and mine.

Dear Petra, my deepest condolences on the passing of your friend. Yes, there’s a void at first when a loved one leaves us. But we’re still here, and as you say, every minute is precious and should be lived and enjoyed mindfully. I don’t put anything off “until later” anymore either—I live the life I want to live right now.

You’re doing a wonderful job of this by revisiting all those beautiful moments. In doing so, you’re honoring your friendship in a special way.

Dear Petra,
I’ve already congratulated you.
But I just had to check in again briefly.

Your best friend passed away at just 57 after a serious illness. I’m 58 myself right now, and I think that’s too young to go. But no one in the world can choose that—neither the when nor the how.

  It’s wonderful that you were by her side as a friend—both in life and at the end. You shared so much together; no one can take that away from you—it will remain in your heart forever. There are so many lonely people who have never experienced the joy of a true friendship. Life and friendship are precious.

Saying goodbye is a process. It takes time; your heart will mourn her for a long time to come. But it’s also a comfort that, after her serious illness, she was finally able to pass away and be free of that burden.

We humans here on Earth have only a limited lifespan, and we must think carefully about how we fill our time—which people are worthy of our time, and which things are a waste of time. The older we get, the shorter that time becomes. So let’s start today by enjoying the moments we have left in life.
