Since I’m currently on a campervan holiday at Lake Chiemsee and have raided Traudelina’s shop, all my crochet hooks and knitting needles are getting plenty of use now. Of course, I knit on holiday too—it’s especially fun in and in front of the campervan. After all, there’s always room for yarn, even in the tiniest space. ;-)

Right now, I’m working on a baby blanket. And with all my new ideas, I hope it doesn’t end up in the next UFO contest...

This colorful sweater for toddlers makes fall just a little bit more vibrant.




What makes this polo sweater special is that it has almost no seams (just at the top of the shoulder). It’s knitted from the bottom up.

The pattern for the polo sweater is 10 pages long, including photos, and is suitable for experienced beginners with the basic skills listed here.

The following basic skills are required:

• knit and purl stitches
• knit through the back loop
• yarn over (you’ll need this for the buttonhole)
• Increasing stitches (the different methods are described)
• Increasing stitches
• Bind off stitches
• Kitchener stitch for knit stitches (for sewing together at the shoulder—or simply crochet them together)
• Color change (for the stripes)
• Embroidering knit stitches onto knitted pieces
• Picking up stitches to begin knitting (here, the sleeve)

Many steps are illustrated with photos.

The sweater’s measurements:

• Total length of the sweater: 35 cm
• Width across the chest: 27 cm (cuff unstretched: 21–22 cm)
• Sleeve length from the start of knitting: 27 cm
• Sleeve width at the top: 12 cm
• Sleeve width at the cuff: 6 cm

Size: Based on my estimate, this should be size 86 / 92 or 98 for children aged 1 1/2 to about 2 1/2 years.
The sweater can be easily adjusted for other sizes. To do so, simply note the measurements and adjust the width, length, and sleeve measurements accordingly.

The worst part was that Traudelina was constantly busy with customers, and I… had soooo much time to look at yarn.

Oh dear… and I just liked way too much of it. And I got sooo many ideas for what I could make with it. So much for my good intentions. I’d even made a point of bringing only a little cash and leaving my debit card at home.

And what do creative yarn addicts do in that situation? Of course—buy on account and pay later.

Oh well, now winter is saved and I’ll keep adding to my shop here. :-)

Creative break?? What’s that?
For me, that’s just not possible because I have a zillion ideas waiting to be brought to life.

I’d have to be sick for that—which rarely happens, even for just a day. ;-)

For me, though, creativity doesn’t just mean working with a needle or yarn. There are so many other things, like writing books.

Well, and I also like to play (real) games, and I’m creative there, too. ;-)

Yes, like many others, I only found the forum by chance after quite some time, when I took a closer look at the “More” button.

If we want more activity here, it needs to be much more prominent on the main page. Otherwise, simply too few people will find it.

A newsletter dedicated solely to forum topics would actually be a good idea. And a note saying that everyone is invited to participate.

For me, the ideation phase is the longest. During that time, I make lots of sketches and try out different color combinations on paper.

Once I have the yarn and get started, I keep a notebook where I write down everything from the very first step. Later, I transfer that information to my computer.

For some patterns, I’ve already reached the point where I type them into the computer as I’m creating them. That saves me time later on, and it also helps me remember what I did.

Hi Michaela,

I’m in a similar situation to Heike. Since there’s no store near me (thankfully!), I buy my yarn online—and of course, with free shipping. Opening the package is always like Christmas, Easter, and my birthday all rolled into one. :-)

So I’ve slowly built up quite a stash, but I already have tons of ideas in mind for it.

For bigger projects, like my cardigan right now, I buy enough yarn to make sure I have plenty. I then use the leftovers for smaller projects or for my granddaughter. That works out pretty well.

It gets interesting when I’m missing one or two skeins and don’t realize it until I’m knitting. Oh dear—then I go back and forth: should I just buy those skeins now… or should I start a bigger project and save on shipping again? ;-)

I couldn’t fill a yarn shop just yet, but I’m well on my way… grinning.

Well, I know that feeling too. :-)

Shortly before I stopped knitting years and years ago, I’d started a sweater for myself. All that was left were the sleeves. And for some reason, I just didn’t feel like finishing them.

When I started knitting again last year, I unraveled the sweater and used some of the yarn to knit a little blue baby dress for my granddaughter. And I used the rest to make a summer sweater for myself. That way, at least the yarn served a purpose, and I enjoyed knitting again.

Now, if I don’t like something, I’ll unravel it and start something new. After all, it’s supposed to be fun. 

Oh oh... this isn’t going to work for me. I’ll be at Traudelina’s on Thursday... and there’s no way I’ll be sticking to a yarn diet. I’m already fearing the worst. :-)

But for “UFO Queen” in October, I’m in. Knowing myself, by then I’ll have a few UFOs that still haven’t landed, circling around and waiting to land.

I’ve also got a new project in the planning stages—it’s going to be a hooded jacket for my granddaughter.

I already congratulated you in the UFO thread, but I’d love to do so again here. Every child is a gift from heaven, and that’s exactly how you should see it. When you look into your Anton’s eyes, it’s just like looking into the world of angels. He’ll be well taken care of with you—I know that. He’s already receiving so much love and admiration… and besides, he’ll always be warm—he’ll certainly never be short on woolly, cozy things.

I can relate to your immense joy so well. It immediately reminds me of the birth of my son, which was 41 years ago now. Then, 1.5 years ago, my first grandchild, Linja, was born—that was such a wonderful experience, too. Without her, I probably wouldn’t be here, because she inspired me to take up knitting.

Have lots of fun together and enjoy every minute. Yes, this time flies by incredibly fast.

Hehe... Reduce my yarn stash?? How’s that even possible? Mine somehow keeps filling up all on its own, as if by magic. ;-)

I’m in, Josefa, every month. This is a great idea and really motivates me to finally finish those UFOs and reduce my (old) yarn stash so there’s enough room for new yarn. At least that way we save ourselves from having to buy new cabinets (grin). I’d rather spend that money on yarn.

Maybe we could do something Christmassy in December, along the lines of “Heavenly Yarn Corner” or something like that. Everyone could showcase their Christmas projects or gifts.

Traudelina, we were up at Seebruck on Lake Chiemsee—it’s closer to where we live. But a visit to your awesome yarn shop is definitely on my wish list. As for when that’ll be—let it be a surprise. :-) I’ll probably have to save up a bit more first, because I’m afraid I might find quite a few things there.
