TV-friendly Patterns / December Highlights

This children’s sweater made from sock yarn is also perfect for knitting while watching TV. It’s cozy, warm, and very comfortable. The collar made from solid-color merino wool and the button placket are the special touches here. The sweater fits sizes 86 to 98 and has no seams.

How’s the Christmas yarn coming along? Woolly Wednesday

My yarn is doing great! Right now, it’s growing faster than I can use it up. But next year, I won’t be buying any yarn, and then I’ll turn it into pretty things.

I’ve got some yarn on its way—I’m still waiting for it. After all, I want to stock up well. Next year, I’m joining the annual yarn diet. :)

It’s Arni’s birthday // free patterns as a gift

Dear Sandra, don’t worry about how this day turned out. You can make up for the celebration as soon as you’re feeling better. Then it’ll be twice as nice. Luckily, there are still 364 days left in the year that can turn out completely differently.

I hope you feel better very soon.

Warm regards,
Monika

Baby Yarn

I only use natural fibers—either soft wool that doesn’t itch (only from sheep that aren’t mistreated) or pure cotton. A blend of wool and silk is also excellent for clothing worn next to the skin. Baby merino or extra-fine merino (I use the one from Drops) is a good choice for babies.

What does the asterisk in the pattern mean?

Hello rita-teichert,

I would recommend writing to the author directly. You’ll definitely get an answer there, because she knows best what is meant.

You can get to the contact form through her shop and then via the "Contact" link. There may also be an email address in the pattern.

Good luck!

Best regards
Monika

Casting On Stitches in Knitting Made Easy

I only use the cast-on method these days, mainly because it creates a loose edge. Yes, and I always use a larger needle for it. That’s what’s worked best for me.

The Special Shawl - a Story

@Packofblacksheep

That’s a very lovely story about a shawl. Now you can crochet your grandma’s shawl for yourself. It’s sure to turn out just as pretty.

Who knows—maybe the original shawl is still lying in some box somewhere, waiting to be found? Surprises like that can happen sometimes.

Knitting for Babies: What Should You Keep in Mind?

The yarn should be soft and not itchy. It should also be easy to wash and made of natural fibers. It shouldn’t shed either, since babies tend to put things in their mouths.

Another thing I always make sure of is that the garment is easy to put on and take off. Most babies don’t like having things pulled over their heads. You should also be careful with ties around the neck.

And, of course, baby clothes should be comfortable. A thick (cloth) diaper absolutely has to fit inside long pants. That’s why I always knit the waistband very high so they don’t slip down.

Hard-working little helpers: What are you working on?

I really like the whole bag, Mel. It looks unique and really cool.

I’m working on the jacket for my husband every now and then. It’s growing centimeter by centimeter. ;-)

Converting gauge

I use a knitting calculator or a counting frame for this. That way, I can calculate it to the exact centimeter.

Of course, it’s also possible without these tools. For example, if I need 35 cm and my gauge shows 20 stitches for 10 cm, then it’s simple. I just multiply 20 by 3.5, which equals 70 stitches.

I calculate the height the same way. But as I said, it’s easier with the knitting calculator.

Weekend Plans: What are you up to?

I’ll be continuing to knit on various projects and writing patterns. Tomorrow we’re having brunch with our neighbor (who also knits) on the patio—probably for the last time this year. For that, I’m going to try out some vegan recipes and make some spreads.

How are you?

I’m doing great. I spent the whole weekend knitting in the garden. And today, my husband and I went to the park in Bad Füssing and went for a bike ride—in the sunshine and with almost summer-like temperatures. It was absolutely lovely.

Wooly Wednesday: Do you have enough yarn right now?

Since I went on a yarn shopping spree last month, my stash is fully stocked again. Today I realized that I’ve actually used up quite a bit during my 10-month yarn diet. That’s freed up some space, so I was able to store my new yarn perfectly without having to buy any new cabinets. ;-)

Now I’m looking forward to lots of new projects that I can bring to life.

Crochet chart / knitting chart: Difficult to learn?

Yes, I felt the same way. Herbstblatt made it easy for me because the rows are also included there. That made it easy to compare.

Generally, I prefer working in rows, but for complicated patterns, having an additional crochet chart is very helpful.

When knitting, I also prefer to work in rows. However, some patterns are best explained using a knitting chart. I invent my own, but it is very easy to understand.

Sock Yarn?

It absolutely has to be made of natural fibers, at least 75%, like regular wool. Of course, 100% wool or cotton is even better.

New Knitting Patterns September 2019

Brand new is the knitting pattern for these adorable baby leggings. They’re wonderfully soft and cozy warm. Thanks to the stitch pattern, they fit comfortably against the body and allow plenty of freedom of movement.

What’s especially important is that even the bulkiest diaper fits in them. The waistband is knitted extra high, so the tummy stays nice and warm too. You’ll hardly find pants like these in stores. Any knitting mom or grandma will be delighted.

The leggings grow with the baby and fit from about 3 to 18 months.

Hard-Working Little Helpers in Early September

Fair Trade When Buying Clothes

This topic is also very important to me. When it comes to wool, I make sure that no animals are mistreated, and I always “buy” my clothes secondhand. That way, the toxic dyes have already been washed out.

Waschbär also sells good clothes, but not everyone can afford them—including me.

I have another good place to get wool. It’s the Finkhof, near Ravensburg. Just add .de to the end. ;-)

Thanks for the interesting links!

Best regards, Monika

How are you today? Did you have a good weekend?

I’m working on a knitting project—I almost finished it over the weekend.

Right now, I’m trying out different vegan yogurt alternatives that taste absolutely delicious. I’m also making homemade fruit ice cream every day, and I’m currently testing out different variations. It turned out nice and creamy with ground sunflower seeds.

I still have a lot to finish up this week since we’re going on a trip next week.

Since we’re campers ourselves, I think the idea is especially wonderful.

Would you perhaps like to join in our monthly threads and show your crocheted items there? It’s incredibly motivating! I’m speaking from personal experience. I’m amazed myself at how much I manage to get done since I started taking part.
