What can beginners knit?

knitting projects for beginners are a topic that comes up time and again, so I’m starting a thread about it. Maybe you’d like to share your thoughts. Have fun knitting!

I think it also depends a bit on the beginner’s age. For a child, I’d recommend a scarf knitted in garter stitch—that’s enough to start with. The child will see results quickly and only has to knit knit stitches.
As for an adult beginner, I think they’re capable of reading patterns carefully and following illustrated explanations of the stitches; just knitting knit stitches straight ahead would probably get boring too quickly.

Yes, I think starting with a scarf—in your favorite color—would be a nice project. It’s also great for a child.

Start with just knit stitches—garter stitch. Then you’ll learn purl stitches, and after that, patterns like seed stitch, zigzag, diamond, etc.

These different patterns work well on a scarf. A dishcloth would also be a good choice. 

As a child, I also started with a doll’s scarf knitted in garter stitch. One of my little bears is wearing it around its neck now.

Assuming you’ve already practiced knit and purl stitches, a dishcloth or washcloth is actually a great place to start. Other solid-color projects are also great for beginners.

Once you’ve learned how to knit two stitches together, I’d recommend moving on to a hat.

If you know how to knit and purl stitches, a slipover would be incredibly easy. For example, the “Suchtlappen” from Casa di Lana (Y..T.b.)—I just finished it, and it’s super easy and quick to knit.
