Totally “silly” knitting mistakes.... Do you have any too?

In my knitting group, I keep hearing about totally “crazy” knitting mishaps....
People are knitting gloves while relaxing in front of the TV, and only realize toward the end that they’ve knitted two left hands....
I just made one of those oops moments myself. Modular, a loop, and oops—take a look....
The center pattern 🙈—somehow a row was missing, and now I have that pretty pattern on just one side....
What’s gone “awry” for you guys?????

Knitting isn’t really the problem, since I almost exclusively make socks and scarves. When I sew, it’s usually combined with some entertainment—sewing up the turning opening is pretty standard. But teddy bears sometimes end up with two left arms, or dogs with five legs....
And every good crochet project has been unraveled at least once somewhere—that’s just part of it.

That’s how it is, Veronika—even I only start sewing when I have my seam ripper within reach, because I’m guaranteed to need it at some point :-)
It’s similar with knitting. Years ago, I knitted a jacket for my husband, and when I was already a few rows further along, I noticed that purl stitches had snuck into the stockinette stitch. I didn’t want to rip it out anymore, and since it was pretty much at the beginning of the jacket, I made a virtue out of this mistake and intentionally knitted in a few purl stitches here and there. In the end, it looked like it was part of the pattern. One of my sons-in-law wears that jacket now and feels comfortable in it.

Best, Inge

Steffi, your knitting mistake is annoying, but not too bad for a loop scarf. You might even think that’s how the pattern is supposed to be.

I just made a pretty bad knitting mistake myself—on Karlos’s patch jacket. I’d worn it several times already, but only now did I notice that a center seam had come undone on one of the patches—luckily under the arm. This has happened to me before, but back then I was still able to rip it out. This time, that wasn’t an option at all, so I had to sew the hole shut somehow, using Kitchener stitch. It was a real fiddly job, and I hope the seam doesn’t come apart again. Ever since then, I’ve been super careful to make sure all the stitches are actually connected before I finish a patch,

Yesterday I sewed bedding for a doll’s bed. When sewing, you have to concentrate really hard and not let your mind wander. The decorative trim was actually supposed to show all around the edge at the end. On my first try, it ended up revealing its beauty on the inside of the duvet cover. As Inge says, you can’t do it without a seam ripper.

Best regards, Ina

Hi,
that’s why I find crocheting easier—you can (if the yarn allows it) unravel it more easily.
I’d just started knitting a great scarf in brioche stitch, but unfortunately a stitch must have slipped during the side decreases. By the time I noticed, it was already too far gone, and with brioche stitch, knitting it back up isn’t possible (as far as I know🤔), so I had to unravel the whole thing again 😩.
I really needed a “lifeline” there, but somehow I always forget about it 🙄
If I start knitting this scarf again, I’ll definitely need a lifeline 😇
How often should you insert a lifeline? 🤔

I can’t say for brioche stitch, but when knitting lace, depending on the pattern, I put in a lifeline every 5–10 rows.... I knit those rows, check them, and then, when I would put in the next one, check again, take out the “old” one, and put in a new one....
That would’ve definitely saved me from having to rip out my work while knitting the christening gown. In the last four rows of the underdress, I lost a stitch.... Normally I can fix something like that, but in this case, the dress had a pattern on every row. So in both the right-side and wrong-side rows, there were yarn overs and stitches knitted together.... No chance.
So “only” the underdress is missing... I just couldn’t bring myself to start it again.

Unraveling double-faced knitting is especially fun.
I put my original plan on hold yesterday and am now making double-faced spiral socks.

The cap heel just wouldn’t cooperate the way I wanted.

It would actually be a good idea for a St. Nicholas stocking. It’d hold twice as much 😁

Joking aside, that’s really annoying.

Oh no, oh no... That was a lot of work, too! With socks, I’ve managed to keep knitting with the starting yarn after casting on the stitches—twice in a row now. I didn’t get very far with that...😂

When crocheting big projects like triangular shawls, I also tend to lose stitches somewhere or suddenly end up with too many. Then, toward the end, I always cheat a little to make sure I have the right number of stitches for the next pattern row.😇

Sometimes when I’m talking, I pull the wrong needle out of my hand when I’m working with a set of double-pointed needles.
That’s how I’ve lost a stitch before, and kept knitting without noticing it was missing. I also had to re-rib the thumb because it would’ve been too tight otherwise.

You don’t realize until the second sock that you don’t have enough yarn.

On a sweater, I ended up with a figure-eight in the cuff just a few rows after casting on.

I was already thinking, who has a “brain”? Not me—I made a huge mistake...
I wanted to/am knitting a headband with a knot.... It’s actually beginner-friendly, so I figured I should be able to do it. But the knot always came out wrong for me—it didn’t look like a knot at all, everything was twisted... So I had to unravel it again, knit, unravel it again, knit—and repeat that x times. I was at my wits’ end, so I watched the YouTube video again. It was right, after all—so why was it still wrong? Am I too dumb to knit a beginner-friendly pattern? I can knit, after all.... So I tried again.... Still twisted.... Then suddenly the knot came out right.... Yay😊... On the second headband, same mistakes all over again—unraveling, knitting, unraveling, watching the video—why had it worked before...?
Then suddenly it hit me: I’d twisted the knitting. If you turn it the right way, the knot comes out right too 😂🤣.

Yeah, sometimes things just go wrong....
A call from a friend: “I’m knitting a baby romper right now, but somehow the decreases aren’t working out...” “Hold on, let me read you what it says here....” She reads me what’s in the pattern and can’t stop laughing.... “Thanks for your help”... 😳🤔 But I didn’t say anything.... She says, “It says to ‘put the stitches on hold,’ and I cast them off...” Mistake found....
