Thanks for the great tip—I didn’t know that. :) But I’ve also found that the fabric becomes firmer and more even after washing, especially with pure cotton.

Washcloths and dishcloths are always needed and gladly received. And when they’re hand-knitted, they’re something truly special.

Anja, it’s great that you brought this up. I’m a huge fan of bartering and have years of experience with it. That’s where most of my yarn comes from, as well as some supplies that I’d otherwise have to pay a lot of money for. There’s also a lot of handmade items offered there. Since I always have people interested in my work, I haven’t needed to do that so far. But I’ve also toyed with the idea—I’ll probably give it a try eventually.

Crocheted food for the kids’ play kitchen is a really great idea for toddlers. When my granddaughter was 2 years old, she wanted to feed her teddy bear, too. That’s when I got the idea to crochet her favorite foods. Now she’s 6 and her little sister is 3. Both of them play with the crocheted food very often and enjoy it, which of course makes me happy.

Yes, dear Ina, the olives are disappearing fast. I’ll definitely make this again next year, but with double the amount. Well, it does take a bit of work, but it’s definitely worth it and much cheaper than store-bought olives.

I was advised to follow the included recipe to the letter. That’s how they turned out absolutely perfect. They were even on the table on New Year’s Eve.

Of course, they’ll get them for Christmas. That’s when my granddaughters’ dolls will get their presents, too. They’re already really excited. One of the girls is even getting a new doll with lots of accessories.

Karola, I’m sure your rolls will turn out great, too. I had a few failed attempts back then as well. But after a lot of trial and error, they finally turned out really well. Back then, there was no internet, but today you can find lots of great recipes online to try out.

A few days ago, I was amazed that the first Sunday of Advent is already approaching. Because of the warm weather we had until recently, the thought of the Christmas season had completely slipped away. Now it’s suddenly right around the corner.

A little decoration can make a big difference, and I’ll get to that in the next few days. At least yesterday I baked our beloved sheet-pan gingerbread. The whole apartment smelled like Christmas.

My balls of yarn are huddled together in the drawers, bored out of their minds, eagerly waiting for me to finally turn them into a beautiful project. Every time I open the drawer, they look at me pleadingly: “Take me with you! I want to finally fulfill my purpose and get to know the big, wide world!”

Well, there are always a few balls whose pleas I heed. The others have to be patient just a little longer. It’s a special treat for them when they get to travel along in a swap package from Ina. They love that, because they get lovingly stroked by lots of people and then get to stay with one of them. When they have to disappear into a closet for a little while, they get to meet other balls of yarn, and they all share their stories. That way, everyone forgets their boredom for a while.

My knitting needles are also happy when they finally get to work and fulfill their purpose. You see, they’re also veeeery bored by then—and yes, cold, too. They love soft, warm hands, and when the yarn glides past them, they start to glow with joy.

The next time you sort through your yarn stash, listen closely to what the balls of yarn are telling you. Maybe they’ll even tell you what they want to become one day.
