Stretch and non-stretch fabrics in sewing

Why do you need stretchy or non-stretchy fabrics when sewing?

Stretch fabrics contain at least 3–5% spandex, such as jersey, stretch cotton, and Lycra fabrics used to make swimsuits and similar items. Tricot fabric also contains spandex; depending on how it’s manufactured, it’s used to make undergarments like camisoles and panties, as well as nightwear. Jersey and similar fabrics are used to make dresses and tops, as well as some tracksuits.
So-called firm fabrics, meaning non-stretch fabrics, mostly cotton or linen, are used to make pants, jackets, coats, dresses, and so on. Sturdy cotton fabrics, such as awning fabric, are used to make awnings and similar items. The range is quite large and versatile.

I like to use stretch fabrics like cotton jersey when I sew children’s clothes or T-shirts. They don’t need to be ironed, and it’s easier for kids to put the clothes on and take them off. I used to sew only with non-stretch fabric, but now I almost prefer sewing with jersey.
