Christmas Wish List

My mother took a bad fall over the weekend and has been in the hospital ever since. You can actually see her wasting away. My wish is that she makes it to Christmas. Other than that, I’d prefer it if the Christkind just left me alone this year.

Design question: How do you design shawls / triangular shawls / stoles / cowls?

I’m a lot like Tina—I just start knitting. Most of the time, the yarn tells me what it wants to become. I can’t really stop myself once I start. But if I write things down at all, I only do that afterward; I can’t do it at the same time. At most, I’ll jot down a few very brief notes if there’s something I don’t think I’ll remember.

Colorful + Bright Colors

This scarf is especially well suited for colorful gradient yarns; because it is knitted diagonally, it really shows off the colors. The gradients can be long or short, bright and colorful or more subtle—whatever you like. The pattern is simple. One side of the scarf has a lace edge, but it shouldn’t cause any major difficulties.

You can find the pattern here.

Colorful + Bright Colors

Especially during the shortest days of the year, we often long for bright colors that make the gray a little more bearable. How about little colorful pouches that you can knit all your colorful sock yarn leftovers into? They’re fun to knit, and afterward they can be used nicely as gift wrapping—which is often needed at this time of year!

Lace Shawl / Lace Pattern

This knitted scarf features a simple yet very striking lace pattern. Knitted with thick yarn, it’s also surprisingly quick to finish. A knitting chart will help you follow along.

Lace Shawl / Lace Pattern

I’d like to recommend a special lace shawl to you. Inspired by the fairy tale of Snow White and designed in white and red (though of course you may use other colors too). The shawl combines two different lace patterns, which also contrast with each other in color. It is not difficult to knit, but I would not recommend it for beginner knitters. The pattern is written out row by row and also shown in several knitting charts.

You can find the pattern here.

We’ve had snowfall for the last two days, but it’s stopped now. At the moment, we’re expecting a foehn storm to move in overnight.

Yellow and Orange / Sunny Yellow Is Trending for 2018

This knitted shopping bag also features bright yellow and orange mixed with a contrasting color. It’s sure to brighten your day!
The bag is knitted in the round using cotton yarn. The pattern is a simple slipped stitch pattern.

Yellow and Orange / Sunny Yellow Is Trending for 2018

Of course, you can also knit this lace-patterned hat in any color you like.

How do you like it in sunny yellow?

Depending on the size, you’ll need between 155 and 170 meters of sock yarn for the hat; it’s knitted with 3mm needles. There’s a knitting chart for the lace pattern.

Yellow and Orange / Sunny Yellow Is Trending for 2018

I think these pot holders look especially good in sunny yellow. They look great in other colors too, of course—it’s a matter of taste. I just really love yellow :-)
A simple knitting pattern using knit and purl stitches, suitable even for beginners. For pot holders, you should use thicker cotton yarn but thinner needles to create a tight stitch pattern. However, you can also use this pattern to knit a dishcloth—in that case, it doesn’t need to be as tight.
The pattern is written out row by row and also shown in a knitting chart.

You can find it here.

A crocheted lace shawl brings joy and looks beautiful. Basically, you can crochet the shawl with any yarn you like. My original is made with lace yarn, but you can also use other yarn weights—maybe not too thick. The pattern itself is easy to follow and relaxing. A crochet chart helps you work it up.

Here’s the pattern.

Scarves are in high demand this time of year, and you can get quite a bit done over a weekend.
This scarf is knitted from sock yarn using a lace and cable pattern. It looks very elegant, but it’s not difficult at all.

When the week is finally over and it’s stormy and snowing outside, it’s nice to curl up on the sofa with a relaxing knitting project. This stole, knitted from sock-weight yarn, is very relaxing and perfect for watching TV. Yarn usage depends on the desired width and length. The pattern is simple and suitable even for beginners.

Baby Shoes + Baby Hats

How about a colorful baby hat with cables? It’s not exactly easy to knit, I have to give that warning, but it looks very striking in the two colors (which can of course be chosen freely).
The pattern is available in 3 different sizes.

Hats + Gloves + Wrist Warmers + Scarves + Infinity Scarves + Shawls // Stay nice and warm

I find wrist warmers very practical. Your fingers stay free when, for example, you’re looking for small change for the bus, and they still keep your hands warm. And they’re quick to knit and fun!
For this model, you need a bit of sock yarn (approx. 90 m is enough) and 3 mm knitting needles. The wrist warmers are knitted in rows, very easy. They have an unusual lace pattern that is explained in a tutorial.

Here’s the pattern.

A colorful infinity scarf is just the thing for cold, dark winter days. Knitted from soft merino wool, it keeps your neck warm and feels great. The pattern is simple—you just need to know how to knit in the round.

This Rapunzel-inspired knitted baby hat isn’t for the faint of heart. Rapunzel was the one with the braid, and this hat features one too. But that’s not all—the hat also features two-tone vertical stripes. That definitely takes some skill.

Experienced knitters are sure to enjoy a lace shawl too. This one combines two different lace patterns, which are also set off from each other by color. Of course, you can choose whatever colors you like. The shawl is knitted with sock-weight yarn, and the amount needed depends on the desired size.

Advanced Patterns: Find a New Challenge

Dear beginners, I have nothing against you, and you can also find plenty of beginner patterns from me, but please look away for a moment. This scarf is for people with a lot of experience.
For knitting experts, I have a pattern here that is worked in the double-knitting technique. Very warm and very soft, because it actually consists of two layers that are knitted at the same time. This creates a pattern that is mirrored exactly in color on the reverse side. This pattern is shown in a knitting chart.

You can find the pattern here.

Using Leftover Yarn Creatively: Colorful and Unique

For example, if you have half a ball of yarn left over from a sweater, you can use it to knit a headband that matches the sweater. Mine is made of merino wool with a yardage of 105m per 50g. The pattern is simple and consists of knit stitches and purl stitches.

Using Leftover Yarn Creatively: Colorful and Unique

The nice thing about leftover yarn projects is that they’re often so colorful! That always makes me happiest. You use what you have, and afterwards you have something small in your hands. Bookmarks, for example, are ideal for leftovers.
These here are knitted in a pretty lace pattern (there’s a knitting chart for it), and about 20 m of cotton is enough for one.

Crochet hooks size 7 and up—is there a trick to it?

The thickest hook I’ve used so far was a size 15. That took some getting used to. It wasn’t tiring in itself, but I noticed that it just goes slower. I had to re-grip after each stitch, which I don’t have to do with thinner crochet hooks. And I definitely had to crochet more loosely. It was a blanket, which was still finished quickly thanks to the thick yarn, but I noticed that the movements were just different.

First Steps as a Beginner in Handicrafts

Start with smaller projects—that way, it won’t be so frustrating if you make a mistake here and there. But basically, just go for it! Just like Heike, who wanted to crochet a bag as her first project and succeeded—I’m sure many others can do the same. Don’t be afraid—just follow the pattern. Before you know it, it’ll “click.”

New Knitting Patterns for December + November 28, 29, and 30

What are you working on right now?

I’m still working on the red glitter socks—it’s been taking quite a while now. But there’s not much left to do; I’ll definitely have them finished by Christmas. In the meantime, I’ve started a new shawl—one that has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. Somehow, it’s going much faster than the socks :-)

I don’t have the pattern, so I don’t know what it says. But in the comments on the pattern, someone asked about the number of chains a while ago and got an answer. Maybe that will help you?
