October Projects: UFO Week, Best of the Leftovers, Shopping Queen, Busy Christmas Elves, and All Other Title Highlights

Update October 25, 2018
So you don’t have to scroll so much, I’ve opened a new thread for the October projects.
October projects: Part 2.

******************************************************************

Dear users, dear authors,
here is the thread for the October projects.
UFO Week from October 24–31.
Awards ceremony because of the holiday on November 3 or 4.

More info to follow.

******************

Preview for November and December.
UFO Week November from November 23–30

UFO Week December from December 10–17?

Scheduling UFO Week later in December would conflict with the holidays. In December, it’s less of a UFO Week and more of a “last-minute-quickly-finish-all-the-Christmas-gifts” campaign.
Alternatively, no UFO Week in December, but from December 1 until the last minute before the holidays, an action thread for all busy Christmas elves?
Tell me what you think about that.

*****************************

In January there’ll be a regular UFO Week again from January 24–31 and, of course, all the popular title highlights from the 1st–31st.

*****************************

Here are the September threads for rereading

September Projects: UFO Week, Best of the Leftovers, the popular title highlights plus Shopping Queen

Specialist in concrete casting really does sound good.

October Projects / the very last garden/balcony projects
There is room here in the thread for all projects for the month of October.
The time for garden and balcony projects was / is not quite over in October either. Of course, you can write down details about that. Of course, you can also write about cozy blanket projects here.

More titles as needed: Nobody goes offline without a title. Everyone can join in.

Anyone who crafts in October, is busy, gets many things done, in the crafting area or beyond it, will be honored with a fitting title. If necessary, I’ll invent a suitable title. Yes, that sounds great—a “last-minute Christmas gift finishing” week. I like it!
I’d be happy to join in again every month, of course.

Here are photos of my UFOs that should be finished in October:

The vest for my husband:

The cuddly bear I started for my granddaughter for Christmas:

Here’s what I’ve planned for October:

- No more buying yarn
- No starting any new projects

a giraffe for Anton

the door wreath for Anton
continue working on the doily for Mom

continue crocheting the green section of the baby blanket.

Sandra, you’ve really got a lot planned. But knowing you, you’ll manage it easily.

I baked the spelt sticks with banana and apple today. My husband and I liked them very much. :-) I’ll make them more often.
I changed the recipe a little. Instead of 220 g of spelt flour, I used only 110 g of wholegrain spelt flour and 110 g of oat flour, and I replaced the canola oil with coconut oil.

Thanks again for the recipe.

Best regards, Monika

I’m joining in again this month.
I don’t have a plan, though. I’ll just see what I end up finishing.
In any case, everything will be made with leftover yarn from my stash diet.

I’ve already used up another ball of yarn and finished the front of the vest. Now all that’s left is the upper back and the buttons. It’s coming along nicely. :-)

My giraffe for Anton is almost done, too. I just need to crochet the eyes and three spots and then sew it all together
I probably won’t have much time today. But it should be finished by Saturday :-)

I’m currently hooked on knitting. I want to make so many things—and all at once. I want to crochet two Chinese dragons, Grandma and Grandpa as egg cozies, and two Christmas elves (all Christmas gifts), and I want to knit a hat, a scarf, and a soul warmer. I’d love to craft day and night, but UNFORTUNATELY that’s not possible—because, unfortunately, I also have to do some cleaning and work...

Project 1 is finished.
So far, though, Anton has been ignoring it. But he’s a little cranky today anyway.

Let’s see if he’ll accept it. Otherwise, I’ll keep it. I like it.

Sandra, I think your giraffe is really cute, too! I’m sure Anton will take it when he’s in a better mood!
You’ve all been very hard at work again! I just started a loop scarf, but it’ll be a while before it’s finished. I also need to come up with a vacation project—one that I can start and finish while I’m there. Last year, it was 1 1/2 hats....

Sandra, the giraffe for Anton is so cute. You just have to love her. Anton will definitely change his mind.

I’ve only been working on little things myself right now—three are finished. Now I just have to figure out what I want to make next.

Sandra, the giraffe, is totally cute and a total charmer. By the way, my son didn’t discover his favorite stuffed animal until he was 2 years old. So don’t worry if he’s ignoring her right now. That can change quickly—especially if someone else takes a liking to her.

Yesterday and today I spent some time outside in the sun crocheting on my little bear, and my slippers are now ready enough that I can toss them in the washing machine. I already have an idea for what I’ll use to sew a non-slip sole onto the bottom. :)

The scarf and hat are finished; pictures to follow. Oh, a whole weekend for knitting!!! I’m currently knitting my second soul warmer over my English book.

Sandra: The giraffe is super cute. My son didn’t discover his stuffed animal until he was five—a stuffed German shepherd named Rex. But he did have that one for quite a long time.

Sandra the giraffe is totally cute :)

I tried out the basket weave pattern yesterday, and the test piece spontaneously turned into a kids’ headband.
Since I don’t have kids of my own, I’ll donate it :)

Tina: The headband looks great.

Monika/Sofi: That puts my mind at ease! All moms of kids the same age say their kids have favorite stuffed animals, and Anton really doesn’t care at all. :-) As long as he has a piece of fabric, an ear, or a tail to suck on. But he doesn’t care whose it is

Oh, Sandra, my son always had a cloth handkerchief to suck on. I changed it every day so it could be washed. He accepted that really well.

When he was 2 or even almost 3, he discovered his love for a monkey, which never left his side after that. :-)

Anton seems to be extending his curiosity to everything, which is great. That way, at least you won’t have a problem if he ever loses his stuffed animal.

How about putting the giraffe in bed with him? If you take it to bed with you first, it’ll have your scent on it. He’ll definitely love that. ;-)

So, I’ve already broken the first thing I’d planned to do. I actually didn’t want to start a new project, but then a good friend came to visit on Saturday and saw our coasters. She immediately wanted to sneak one away for her desk at work. It always has coffee stains on it. :-) I defended mine and promised she’d get one of her own.

Finished. I deliberately made a smiley, not an emoji. She’ll be turning 40 in two weeks, so she’s old and that’s why she doesn’t get anything modern :-))) (I’m allowed to say that, I’m much younger! Exactly 26 days!)

But it’s such a small project that it doesn’t really count, does it?

Wow, Marion, you’ve been so busy. Such beautiful things—I really like them. :)

I’ve also made some progress on the fluffy little bear—out in the sun, by the way.
Now all that’s left are the hind legs, the little tail, and the ears. Finally, I’ll embroider the nose, sew on the eyes, and, of course, sew all the individual pieces together. It’s going to be really cute.

The vest just needs a few more rows. I’ll show you everything when it’s done.

I want to finish this first before I start anything new.
Exception: yesterday I started crocheting an autumn leaf. I just couldn’t resist—using leftover yarn. I plan to finish that this month, too.

New projects are already in the works, but not yet in detail.

The vest still needs buttons, but that’ll be quick to sort out. I’ll keep at it.
I think I’ll get quite a bit finished this month.

I have so many new ideas in my head that I’m not quite sure yet what I really want to make.
Maybe I’ll just make a few socks in between...

This was the UFO I brought with me from home—I finally finished it at the end of my ten-day trip to America! It also deserves the title "Ribbelmonster," since I had to painstakingly unravel everything again because I’d miscounted and hadn’t placed the motifs correctly! Grrr! Of course, I gave the finished shawl away right away, just like the vest!‎

As is almost always the case, the time was far too short, but we saw a lot. The museums in Washington are really great (with free admission): the American Indian Museum, the Natural History Museum… The city is very green, and our son’s neighborhood is teeming with (mostly gray) squirrels (and apparently rabbits, though we only saw one).
I’d still like to show you a picture of a garden decorated for Halloween:

It looks nice and colorful, Christina. Halloween is a big deal in America. I’m not necessarily a fan of it.

It must have been nice to finally get to cuddle your grandson. :)
I’m sure you brought him the little bear in the picture, right?

Arni: There are bunnies on the buttons.
mowi19: No, the little bear was my husband’s good-luck charm for his last trip to South America.
I didn’t bring any toys for the little one—the little doll and the cuddly hippo had already made the trip across the pond before that.

Today I finished up a UFO—my slippers. I’d felted them over the last few days; now I just had to attach the soles.

For slip resistance, I came up with an alternative to liquid silicone. I cut soles from scraps of a soft foam mat and sewed them on the bottom. They feel great to walk in—I’ve already tried them out.

And if the soles ever start to look worn out or even break, I can easily remove them and sew new ones on.

Here’s what they look like—soles included:

Yes, and they're really easy to sew on because they have holes in them.
I’ll make the next pair of shoes for my granddaughter the same way, because I haven’t had very good experiences with liquid silicone. After a while, it doesn’t look good at all, and it doesn’t wash very well either.

So, I’ve reached my next October goal: I’ve used up 2 skeins in my baby blanket.
But now I’m done with mindlessly crocheting back and forth for the time being. :-)
The blanket is now in the closet, and I’ll continue working on the door wreath tomorrow. Now I’m off to bed.

I'm taking advantage of the nice weather and crocheting finger puppets on the balcony. That way, I can use up some leftover yarn.

I’m going to head out to the balcony now and finish up the vest for my husband—at least the knitting part. Then all that’s left is to add the buttons, and he can wear it… he’s already looking forward to it.

Of course, you’ll get to see it here, too.

As for new projects, I’m not quite sure what to start yet. There are just too many ideas… and too much yarn, too. I won’t need to buy anything for a long time. I don’t even dare to take a picture of my stash—I’d probably give myself a shock… because by now it’s scattered all over every possible nook and cranny in the closets.

So, these are my October projects so far: the cat and the Halloween lantern, and this weekend, the finger puppets for the bazaar. All projects that helped me use up my leftover yarn. Today I’ll be continuing to knit my sweater out on the balcony. Actually, all that’s left are the sleeves, but somehow I’m not really in the mood to keep working on it after it’s been sitting around for a while. But I don’t want it to turn into a long-term UFO. When the sun goes down and I have to go back inside, I’ll finish writing up a few patterns.

@ Monika:
But that sweater has been lying around here for quite a while already. And the part of the sleeve that I knitted in the afternoon, I had to unravel again in the evening because I miscalculated and it was too tight.

@Tina:
Thanks! I think your loop scarf is great too, lovely colors! What kind of yarn is it?
(Headbands aren’t really my thing. I don’t like any kind of headwear at all. I think my head is too big for that.)

Wow, you’ve all been super hard at work! It’s amazing. Tina, you have a pretty face—you should definitely show it to the camera :)
My loop scarf is finished now, and I’ve already translated most of the English pattern for the cardigan. Now I just need the right yarn. My husband thinks it would look nice in bright red, but it doesn’t suit me—it makes me look even paler. I’m leaning toward dark teal, but I’m still undecided. Let’s see what the yarn shop has in stock....
My tapestry attempt ended up in the trash last night halfway through the pattern—it was pulling together so tightly at the edges; I must have crocheted it too tightly. Maybe I’ll give it another try today.
Well, now I’m going to get back to my housework and start packing my suitcase before my daughter puts on all the freshly washed clothes that are actually supposed to come with me...

Tina, you’re such a great model. It really shows what it looks like “in real life” when you’re wearing it. :)
Your loop scarf is really pretty—those are my colors, too. And I love the headband as well.

Yeah, Ruth, I know that disaster all too well—it happens sometimes when you’re learning by doing. Luckily, it tends to happen to me more with small things.

Today I’ll finally get around to knitting the shoulders of my husband’s vest together. Now all that’s missing are the right buttons, and then it’ll be done—just in time for the coming cold snap. It’s still pretty much summer here right now.

Yesterday I also crocheted a maple leaf in the garden, just like some of you did. It was a great way to use up some leftover yarn. I’ll finish it today and then show it to you. As usual for me, I’ve changed it up a bit—partly by accident. I actually have one extra point, and it’s in two colors. It already looks totally great.

Now I wish you all a lovely sunny day—just like we’re having here!

Love, Monika

Thanks for your kind words :) You always feel a bit silly when you take a picture of yourself—you always end up grinning so awkwardly at the camera :D

@ruth: It was a 1000 m, 3-ply yarn cake (50% acrylic and 50% cotton) with an additional gold glitter thread.
The colors had to be like that; they match the motif :) (Which is unfortunately a licensed design, which is why I’m not showing the cowl laid out flat here.) I really like them too.

@Mowi: I’m looking forward to the picture of your maple leaf.

Here are some photos of my maple leaf. It turned out really pretty with two colors. I didn’t block or iron it, since leaves aren’t smooth either. I like it better this way.

As I said, I accidentally added one extra point, but that’s okay. The cotton in the middle is pretty thin, while the outer part is a bit thicker. I used the hook size specified in the pattern for the inside, but I think it’s too large for the thin yarn. That’s probably why the inside turned out so loose.

All in all, I really like the leaf, and it goes great with our decor. :)

With this, I’ve now met a few requirements for the October projects:
  • I used up scraps (Reste-Beste).
  • I saved a wallflower.
  • I crocheted it in the garden.
  • I learned something new about crocheting in the process.

Monika, your leaf turned out really pretty! It looks just like a real autumn leaf :)
Actually, while I was shopping earlier, three skeins of yarn just hopped into my cart—no idea how that happened :p
Let’s see what they’ll want to become... my cowl is a scarf again now, because otherwise you can’t see the pattern at all.
I’m halfway done with a tapestry potholder; it worked better this time, although I’m still not completely happy with it.
I’ll post photos tomorrow; I didn’t have time today, and it’s already dark now.

Yes, I’m totally in love with this pretty leaf, too. It would look great with gradient yarn in fall colors.

In my case, it came about because I was using up leftover yarn.

By the weekend, I’ll probably have the next UFO finished: the vest for my husband. I just found the matching buttons in my stash.

That leaf looks really beautiful!

I’m in an extremely bad mood right now. I’ve been working on the doily for my mom. I’d actually gotten really far, but just now, in the 3rd (!!!) round, I found such a big mistake that I now have to unravel everything. I’d already been wondering why it was so wavy.

So annoying. Well, I’d better unravel it then

Oh dear, Sandra… that’s really frustrating times three, especially since you’d already come so far. You’ll definitely get extra diligence points this month. You’ve earned them.

I also thought about starting over with that leaf, but then decided against it. It was pretty wavy at the beginning because of that one extra point. Luckily, it evened out later on.

My husband just got hit in the head with the ball of yarn. His comment was, “You should’ve been more careful!” That really made me mad. And he just laughed. Men

So here’s my scarf! Since it’s so long, it’s actually not that easy to photograph it so you can see everything clearly.
Now I’m going to crochet a little more.

Mel, your scarf is beautiful. It seems you have a thing for cable patterns.

Yes, right now I’m actually really into cable patterns

I picked up this RVO again today after weeks? Months?
I want to finish it this month
so it doesn’t keep floating around as a UFO any longer.

Thank you, Monika! I fell in love with the color gradient of the cake right away! And since it has some wool in it, it’s nice and warm, too.
Creat Owl, your sweater is sure to turn out beautiful; I like the color.

Thanks, Mel :)

By the way, this sweater will be my very first top-down raglan ever.

@Mowi: That leaf is sooo beautiful! Sooo autumnal.

@Arni: Oh no, that’s so frustrating... It totally kills your motivation... at least that’s always how it is for me ;) Are you going to redo it right away or work on something else first?

@Mel: Your scarf is absolutely amazing! I’m totally thrilled!!
AAAH, when am I finally going to learn how to knit? I have to be able to do something like that too!! :D

I finished another amigurumi over the last few days... A kitten. It was actually supposed to be a Christmas kitten, but somehow it looks too sassy for Christmas... We’ll see what I end up doing with it instead :)

@CreatOwl:
Sorry if I didn’t mention you. By the way, your sweater is turning out beautifully! It would also look cool as a short-sleeved shirt.
Somehow I always miss half the posts ;)

Tina, I never would have thought that knitting would come so easily to me. With crocheting, you always feel like you’re on the safe side, because mistakes are much easier to correct, and losing a stitch doesn’t have such dire consequences as it does with knitting. I still really enjoy crocheting, but knitted items are definitely softer and more fluid. By the way, I finished my (very large) pot holder. It’ll probably remain “single,” because, as my objective husband said yesterday: “It looks okay, but it’s not exactly a masterpiece—you’ve made prettier things before!”
I love him for his honesty; he’s my best critic.
So tapestry really does take some practice!

Mel, it looks good for your first try.

CreatOwl, I’d also like your sweater as a shirt without sleeves; it has a lovely color.

Tina: I’ve gotten really motivated now, so I’m continuing with the doily. The first 5 rounds are already done. :-)

My most important September/October project is finished. Our Werner was very happy with “Grandpa Werner” and, best of all, he recognized himself right away :-)
A 70th birthday gift for our “cock of the walk.”

Best regards, Marlies

Monika, your autumn leaf inspired me to give it a try and crochet it with gradient yarn. Here’s the result:
I really like it. Now I want to try optimizing the color gradient a bit so that the reddish-brown is on the outside. Well, that means my sweater is getting put on hold again. I also have a kids’ jacket in mind that I really want to start working on...

@CreatOwi
I'm excited to see your UFO that's about to land. It's sure to be great.

@Mel
The VW bus on the potholder turned out really well. And you can definitely be proud of the result. For men, everything always has to be perfect... tsk tsk.
Mine tried on his new vest this morning and already loves it. : ) Only the buttons and the annoying weaving in are still missing ...

@Marlies
Your grandpa gift turned out totally sweet. I really like him.

@Ruth
the leaf looks suuuper, just like a real one with the color gradient. It turned out great and was crocheted soo quickly.
Mine is lying on the table as decoration, and I enjoy it every day. I don't even want to put anything on it, because then you can't see it anymore.

Hi Tina,

everyone can decide for themselves how long the sleeves should be.
That’s what I love about RVO.

This leaf is addictive! I just finished crocheting a second one. I like the color gradient even better this time because it goes from light to dark.

Wow, Ruth, you’re so fast! Your new leaf looks great!
If I didn’t have so many other projects that I’d rather be knitting right now, that would definitely be my choice too.

I’ve finally finished the vest for my husband—so another UFO is done. I’ll post a photo later.

Also, the day before yesterday I unraveled the last hat I’d knitted for my granddaughter. For one thing, it was too big, and for another, I just didn’t like it as much anymore. So I used the yarn to knit a new one, and I’m almost done with it—which means I’ll earn the “unraveling” title, too. Photos to follow.

Ruth: Yes, the color gradient in the leaf looks great.

The doily for my mom is coming along pretty well now. I’m not quite at the point where I have to unravel everything yet, but I feel like the pattern is getting easier now.

Thanks, Moni and Mel :)

I really like your autumn leaf, Ruth.

I’m working on the cuff now.
After that, it’s time to weave in ends and take some photos.

CreatOwl, I’m curious to see your finished sweater. :)

Here’s the UFO landing "Men’s Vest" with photos:

And here’s the hat that I knitted completely from start to finish in just 3 days (with my special air-cushion stitches):

I’m starting another hat tonight, I’m on such a roll right now.

Honestly, without the motivation from you and your projects, quite a few things of mine would be flying in endless circles as UFOs.

Monika, your vest turned out really nice—it looks great on your husband.

I haven’t gotten much done this month. I did crochet some baby booties for a friend—they’re for twins.

I’ve actually gotten pretty far with my crocheted jacket, but I’m going to unravel it completely again.

The jacket is turning out too thick, and I don’t have enough yarn. I did find a matching yarn, but I just don’t like it.
I’ll show you a picture before I start unraveling it.

Thanks, Ruth and Marion! :) Yes, my husband was really happy, and now he doesn’t get cold anymore. The vest is made of merino wool and is really cozy and warm. It’s perfect for these temperatures right now. By the way, it was knitted in one piece and seamed together at the shoulder.

Marion, the baby booties turned out super cute!
That with the vest is really annoying. It would have turned out really great. You’ve already finished sooo much, and then you run out of yarn. That’s a nightmare for me ... one that, luckily, has never come true.

I haven’t started the second hat yet, because I’m currently in a granny square craze. I’ve never done that before and am learning something new right now. It’s really fun. I’ve already finished two and have the third one on the hook. I’ll post a photo of them tomorrow. They’re going to be new coasters for glasses and mugs.

So this month I’ve learned something new again. :) And at the same time, I’m using up some leftover yarn.

After the practice phase, I’ll start designing some myself. But that will still take a while.
