This thread is about what you think you’ll be able to use up in 2018.
I’m always amazed by just how much yarn you all own.
So, how much do you estimate your monthly consumption will be from April through December, and what will your total consumption be? Post your estimates here, and at the end of the year we’ll compare them with your actual consumption.
Dear Josefa, that needn’t surprise you :-) Last year I used about 22,000 meters of yarn. If I assume an average length of 100 meters per 50 grams (not sure if that’s accurate—some are thicker, some thinner), that comes to 220 balls of yarn. And since it doesn’t grow on trees, you have to get it from somewhere.
I don’t know if I’ll manage to use that much again this year, but I can always set that as a goal.
OMG, Ida! That’s unbelievable! 220 skeins of yarn in one year! You’ve been incredibly productive!
Well, if I do a quick estimate, I’d put my yarn consumption (April through December) at 4,000–5,000 grams at most. But I should mention that I mostly use wool/cotton yarn with a yardage of 120–170 meters per 50 g—so it’s pretty thin. Sock yarn is even thinner. Every now and then, it can be as little as 100 m per 50 g. So, on average, I’d estimate about 140–150 m. For example, my new sweater used just under 300 g, and my poncho used only 200 g. And those are fairly large projects with a considerable yardage.
If I convert 4,000 grams to skeins, that comes out to about 32 skeins. Yeah, I can definitely imagine that.
Let’s see how things look at the end of the year. From now on, I’ll keep track of how much each finished piece weighs.
So far, from January to today, it’s just under 3,000g.
I think another 5,000g–6,000g will be added by the end of the year (in the summer I have less time for crocheting and knitting because that’s when gardening takes priority).
I plan to use up one 200-gram yarn cake every month. On the side, I also make little things for birthdays and for the kids using the scraps I have at home—I’d estimate about 100 grams a month.
So if I do the math, that’s 300 grams for 9 months. That comes to 2,100 grams by the end of the year.
The yarn cake I’ve already used up this month doesn’t count anymore.
I’m curious to see if that works out or if I’ll end up way below or above that amount.
@mowi
With as much as you make, and only 32 skeins? I think you might have miscalculated a bit.
4,000 grams of yarn is already 80 skeins at 50 grams each. Or are you using 125-gram skeins? If you extrapolate that over a whole year, you’ll end up with over 100 skeins. And if you use even thicker yarn, it’ll be even more.
Sorry, but I’m a math teacher. I just couldn’t resist pointing that out ;-))
Thanks for pointing that out, Ruth—I actually made a mistake there. Dividing grams by yardage—how did I even come up with that…? Hmm… You don’t even need to be a math teacher to see that. ;-)
If I divide 4,000 g by 50, I actually get 80 skeins—wow! That means I can really stock up… yay!! By the way, I’m already noticing that my cotton stash is starting to run low, and I’ll have to restock by June at the latest… another thing to look forward to!!
From now on, I’m going to keep track of how much my finished projects weigh and what yardage they have. I’m curious to see what the final tally will be.
Sabine, I’m really impressed by how much you work through! :-) And, admittedly, I’m also a little jealous of your stash. I’d feel like I was in the Land of Milk and Honey. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), I don’t have the space for it.
Looking at my yarn consumption in the first three months of the year, I’m estimating about 220g per month, which would come to roughly 1,890g in total. If it turned out to be more, I certainly wouldn’t be unhappy, but in the summer, gardening takes priority over crafts, and I tend to make smaller projects that use less material but are quite time-consuming, or I use thinner yarns with a long yardage, which go further and therefore add less weight on the scale. The main thing is that my stash is shrinking!
Oh, those annoying autocorrects! Of course, it should say: wool/yarn consumption—it wasn’t quite that great after all! Maybe you should just reread what you’ve written at the end… (it’s easy to forget sometimes!)
I checked my records. In the first quarter, I used 3,377 g of wool—8,769 m.
I don’t know if I can manage that much every month. If I calculate 1 kg per month, that would bring me to 12 kg.
