Dear users, dear authors,
even though the heat is overwhelming, you still bravely stuck with your yarn / material in July. As I wrote over in the final sprint thread, that is true dedication and real love for crafting. A big compliment.

The July threads for rereading:
Final sprint and awards ceremony for the July projects

July Projects: As always with UFO week from July 23-August 3, Best of Leftovers,
Yarn Rescue, Tunisian crochet and all other popular activities

Now it’s time for August and our popular activities.

There are extra points for photos.
All handmade items that are given as gifts also earn extra points.

UFO Week from August 27 to September 3
If it is still or once again this hot at the end of September, we can talk about an extension.
But for the title, as always, at least one UFO—that is an unfinished object = a handmade item that has been lying around for a while—must be finished.

Best of Leftovers in August
Anyone who uses up lots of leftover yarn will receive this title. There are extra points for colorful or unusual color combinations.

Yarn diets in August - three versions

Yarn Emperor/Empress: No yarn purchases from the beginning of August to the end of August. Only stash yarn is used. That is enough for Yarn Emperor/Empress in August.

Final round for rule over this galaxy / the Milky Way: This activity runs from today (August 6 ) until the end of October. During this time, only stash yarn is worked through. Starting in early November, you may buy again. Hopefully that will then be enough for all Christmas models. Starting in January, then a yarn diet to reach the final round for rule over the universe.

New: Shopping Queen / King:
This title is for everyone who likes buying yarn and does not want to go on a yarn diet. Let me know what you bought. Photos are always a good idea. :-) Have fun shopping.

Inner-Pig-Dog Tamer: One year without buying yarn—that is the requirement for this title. As far as I can tell, this title will soon / in early 2019 be awarded. :- ) Haekeltrulla is in the running. Who else?

Rescuing Wallflowers in August: This title will of course be awarded again too. Surely each of you still has quite a few, or even many, patterns (purchased or free, that
counts too, of course ),  that have only been downloaded but not yet made
up? Anyone who in August gives their oldest wallflower
some attention or finishes it will be awarded the honorary title
Wallflower Rescuer.
-->Extra points / bonus points are available
of course, as always, for feedback / comments / reviews of the pattern.

Yarn Rescuer / Material Rescuer (=the former stepchild title for working with stubborn yarn / stubborn material ) : This is the title for working with (old / older ) yarn / material that never really fit. Anyone who wants one of these titles should please upload a photo of the unloved yarn / unloved material. Of course, the yarn / the respective material must also be worked up accordingly and
prettily / attractively. For that, you will then be awarded Yarn Rescuer or
Material Rescuer.

Frog Monster Tamer:
You can write down details here in the thread or over in the link:
Frog Monster Thread: what have you frogged and why?
Anyone who conjures something beautiful out of a Frog Monster has earned compliments and the title. :- )

Learn something new in August and win along the way
Anyone who learned something new in August can write it here in the thread and will then get compliments, honor, and the win for it.

All August projects and all garden projects
Here in the thread there is room for everything you craft in August and
also for all projects that you craft in the garden and on the balcony.
Info and photos are always a good idea.
--> Use the time in the garden / on the balcony, because summer will not last forever this year either.

More titles as needed: No one goes away empty-handed.
Everyone who crafts in August, is diligent, overcomes challenges, etc. etc., and writes about it here in the thread, will be awarded a title (if necessary, I will invent a new one ) and will receive support and compliments from the users and authors here in the thread.

Please count once: leftover yarn / yarn stash / yarn purchases.

As always:
Put this thread here on your forum watchlist, then you will find it again.
Details and info are in the screenshot. The graphic gets larger when clicked or when opened in a new tab.

Photos do not load, or load only slowly, on the phone or PC

Experience shows that many photos are uploaded in this thread. If
it should then happen that you are on a phone / tablet and the photos
are not displayed, then please make absolutely sure that there is enough free storage space on the phone (preferably in the device storage ) and give this thread enough time to load / to build up the images. If you are on a PC and using a somewhat older PC or a PC with only little (free ) RAM, then please close all other tabs and give the thread enough time to load.

As soon as this thread exceeds 100 posts, I will open a new one.

September preview:
We will do all the popular activities again.

For the final sprint and the awards ceremony, there will of course be a separate thread at the end of the month.

Here’s to a wonderful August with bearable temperatures. :- )

Okay, I’ve posted the details for all August projects above.
Anyone who wants to be in the final round for dominion over this galaxy / the Milky Way shouldn’t buy any more yarn from today on. The challenge ends on October 30.
However, we can negotiate the start date if necessary.
How are your yarn purchases going?

How are your August projects coming along so far?
What’s new?

Please upload lots of photos. :- )

Hi everyone!
Well, unfortunately, my UFO has remained a UFO. My current project is taking a bit longer than expected—otherwise, I would have finished one UFO and started a new one at the same time. So the other one will have to wait a bit longer...
But I’ve learned a new technique—or rather, I’m still learning it: knooking! My triangular shawl is almost done, and I already love it! However, I wanted to jazz it up a bit after binding off. And I stayed strong! I didn’t buy any yarn! Even though I had plenty of opportunities to do so!

Warm regards,
Nancy Schmidt

@Nancy Schmidt,
great that you're joining in too.
I also put together an awards ceremony for you.
The awards ceremonies can always be found in the first post of the "Final Sprint and Awards Ceremony threads", under all the information to copy and fill out.
Final Sprint and Awards Ceremony for the July Projects

I'm copying your awards ceremony in here again too, so you don't miss it:

***********
Nancy Schmidt is a winner and has won

Congratulations on taking part in the July projects. Newcomers get extra points, of course. The fact that your UFO is still a UFO doesn't matter; then
you'll still have a UFO to finish in August too. :-)
Congratulations on learning the new technique / knooking. No one can take knowledge away from you. :-)
Congratulations also on becoming WollkaiserIn for one month of yarn diet, if I
understood that correctly? Have fun with the triangular shawl. August
still has a while to go, so you have plenty of time to "spruce up" the
shawl. It's great that you're joining in now too. :-)

I’ll be participating again in August.

I’ve started a new project. I still have quite a bit of leftover yarn from my sweater, so now I’m making a new one to go with it. With this heat, progress is definitely slower.
If I feel like it, I’ll keep crocheting on the Tunisian crochet project on the side.

I definitely haven’t planned too much for myself this time.

Of course, I’ll be joining in again. :-)

Josefa, I’d really like to join the yarn diet too, but I probably won’t be able to start in August. I had to postpone my visit to the yarn shop... But I’ll be joining in from September, and then probably into next year.

My UFOs that I’m bringing into August:
- a bag
- a scarf for babies and toddlers
- a hat (started back in July, but put on hold because of the heat)

So, my first big project wasn’t quite as big after all, and it’s finished. It’s the Paris table runner for a friend’s 40th birthday.

What’s the best way to shape it now? Block it and then use spray starch? Do you have any tips for me?

Here are some pictures of my projects in progress.
Let’s see how things look at the end of the month.

  • Houndstooth pattern, crocheted in Tunisian crochet—that takes longer.
  • A blue sweater or top with a lace pattern—I haven’t decided yet.

It looks really beautiful! Great patterns, Wollefaden!
The table runner turned out really well, Arni! Your girlfriend will surely be very happy about it!
I would stretch the table runner under damp cloths and then maybe spray it with starch. Then it will definitely lie flat.
Best wishes, Nancy

Marion, your new projects look great. I love making patterns like that when I’m knitting—it’s easier for me that way.

Sandra, your table runner looks really great. As for blocking it, the crochet pros here can surely give you some good tips.

Wow, the first August projects are already finished!
Mine’s still in the works, but if it doesn’t cool down soon, I won’t be able to finish it in August. So, I’m knitting this shawl:

Here you go—my current crocheted shirt, unfortunately just draped rather carelessly over the chair ;-) but I’m just not in the mood for styling right now... You should see me—I’m also just slumped on a chair with no energy!

Very pretty, Ida, and totally your style. :-)

Michaela, I like your shirt. I could recognize it even without doing a headstand. ;-)

It’s finally going to cool down on Friday. I’m really looking forward to it!

Heike, you’re amazing! :-) You can do it!

My hat project has now turned into a baby sweater. The size fits perfectly. I’ll make a hat to go with it later.

Since another grandchild is planned, I now have plenty of time to put together a whole starter collection. It’s so much fun!

Have a wonderful day, everyone!

It just occurred to me that our little upstairs neighbor will be starting school soon. Well, I could still crochet a pencil case or a little cuddly friend for her school cone. That means my shawl will have to take a short break. But at least I’ll have used up some more yarn. It’s going surprisingly well despite the heat—though I’m still hoping for cooler weather.

Best regards, Nancy

The baby blanket is as finished as it can be for now. I can’t do the rest until the baby arrives, since I want to crochet the name and date onto it. I also want to sew some fleece underneath to make it warmer.

Now I’m crocheting another blanket (a simpler one) so I can practice sewing them together. And right now, several of my friends are expecting babies.

I’m sure I’ll find someone to give it to.

How’s it going for you all? Right now, the weather is perfect for knitting and crocheting again, so I’m making good progress.

Today, my baby sweater grew a bit. A photo will follow in the next few days.

I’m still stuck on the bag a little. But yesterday I had a brilliant idea on how to continue crocheting it. Then I’ll probably be able to finish it in August.

I’ve also finished the baby scarf—it matches the sweater.

Monika, of course made from leftover yarn—you don’t need much yarn for that.

Monika, you always have such lovely little projects—they’re done in no time.
I don’t have any little grandchildren anymore, so I always have to make big projects.

The colors go together perfectly, and I already love the sweater.

Thanks, Marion! :-)

Yes, I like the color combination too, especially since I don’t know yet whether my second grandchild will be a boy or a girl. It’s still in the planning phase. :-))

By the way, the sweater is also still in the planning phase. I never know until right before I start how I’ll proceed. It’s always really exciting to start a new project like this.

There’ll also be a matching hat to go with it.

Well, and now the bag is entering its final phase...

And I already have something new in mind, though this time with merino wool. It’s a hat for my granddaughter. I’ve already knitted the gauge swatch, but it’s still too warm for me to do more than that. I start sweating just looking at the yarn. :-)

That really is a mammoth project—it looks great! I can imagine that finishing it took quite a bit of perseverance.
Since it’s still warm out, you can still wear it this summer. :-)

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Hi Monika, yes, that really was a mammoth project. But it’s finally done—now I’m crocheting a pair of summer pants and hope I can whip up a pattern for them. Since the major heat wave here in Vienna should finally be over—it’s “only” 33 degrees now instead of the previous 36 or 37 degrees—crafting is getting easier for me again.

Wishing you all a wonderful rest of the weekend and a lovely, not-too-hot start to the week!!

Your creations are really cute! I’m familiar with those “annual UFOs” too. Sometimes you just have to wait for the right moment, and for the moose, that moment happened to be August. The baby clothes turned out beautifully!
I’m still working on the crocheted dress for my little/big girl in size 128. I’ve been working on it for ages, and somehow the dress just isn’t getting any longer—but I’m sticking with it. I really don’t want another UFO.
Best regards, Nancy

I think I may have taken on a bit too much with projects this month...

Besides my long-term project (motif blanket), I’ve also started a loop scarf, a leftover-yarn shawl, a Möbius scarf, a curtain, and a bag.

As soon as my next yarn delivery arrives, I still need to squeeze in a hat for my grandma.... And apart from that, I already have 3 new things planned that I uuunquestionably want to make.

Oh man...

And the next problem: I discovered a really great yarn shop nearby... They have such amazing and unique yarn, sooo varied and wonderfully soft! And this shop is even having a special sale week starting on August 27!
If this keeps up, I’ll probably have to file for personal bankruptcy soon...
(Before anyone misunderstands that: the last sentence was, of course, ironic, but still... :D)

I probably won’t be Wool Empress for the next 100 years.
More like Shopping Queen ;)

Sandra, you're right, it's a pile of leaves.

It was incredibly fun. I was able to use up some leftover sock yarn. The pattern is from here, see the gallery.

@Krea_Tina

Shopping Queen is a nice title too.

If you’d like, I can add "Shopping-Queen / King" to the list of official titles?
Of course, you don’t have to say how much you paid.
Just write down what you bought: skeins, colors, materials, etc.
--> of course, completely voluntary.

“Shopping Queen” is a great alternative to the “Wool Empress.” I like that.

I sewed yesterday and today. Anton can’t bump his head anymore, but I still have 13 slats left to sew around.  The Kam snaps are getting on my nerves. Every fifth one goes on crooked, and I have to undo it again. I’m not sure whether it’s me or them. It’s not that easy to see in the photo.

At the head and foot ends, the fabric is tied at the back, and the fabric around the bars is padded a little and then fastened with Kam snaps, so they can be undone and washed.

Tina, that’s just amazing—everything you’ve managed to accomplish in this August heat! Wow!
Josefa—be sure to include the “Shopping Queen” as well. Because there are plenty of people here who aren’t in the mood for a yarn diet. That way, they can have some fun too. Tina then won first prize in August... *grin*.

Marion, thanks for the explanation about the leaf pile. What a great idea!

My scrap box has gotten emptier again, too. I used mostly sock yarn—even though I don’t knit socks at all. Marion is right; it’s really fun to add to the leaf pile and crochet the hedgehogs.
I unraveled my summer top again and redesigned it.
My blanket will probably remain a UFO for now—it’s just too warm for it. Let’s see what comes next....

Thanks, mowi19. We can do this.
Somehow I’ve always been putting off these UFOs, but doing it together with all of you is actually really fun, and it’s satisfying to see the yarn pile go down. Seriously.
The weather here is cooler again—rain—so it’s perfect crafting weather.

Wow, that’s a really cute little gathering of hedgehogs here. They look so adorable, Mel—you could just fall in love with them.

Yeah, my UFOs would be piling up too if it weren’t for this thread. This makes it really fun and motivates me to keep going.

My preschool bag is also nearing completion. Today I sewed on the buttons, and it’s basically done. I even wrote the crochet pattern at the same time. Now I just need to take some good photos so I can show it to you all.

Let’s see if I can manage to embroider the name on it next week. I’m planning to do that, too.

I’ll probably carry the baby sweater over into September as a UFO. It’s not exactly urgent. The matching hat is still on the needles, too. As you can see, I’m working on multiple projects at once again.

Best regards
Monika

Ruth: Thanks for the tip. But now I’ve finished half of the slats. I’ll get the rest done eventually, too.
For now, I’m going to finish crocheting the baby blanket, which I want to use to practice sewing. But that’s only 7–10 rows left.

My third August project was finished today. Naturally made from leftover yarn.

Thank you, Monika.
You can see it better in the gallery.
I’ve already made a top from the same yarn, and now I still have some left over.

It’s enough to make you cry—the yarn just won’t run out.

Oh Marion, just be happy about it instead. Maybe the color would also look great combined with another one. Apparently, you must have liked the color at some point. ;-)

I could definitely imagine it combined with a lighter blue (striped?).

How about a cushion cover?

Monika, the yarn is absolutely fantastic, and I still love the color. I had 600 g of it and actually thought I’d used it all up on the second sweater.
Now I’ll just have to come up with something else. You know, with the amounts I have, that’s no problem.

A pillowcase is a good idea, but unfortunately the color doesn’t match.

Marion: The top looks really great, and the yarn is wonderful. I’ve just finished crocheting another baby blanket :-) I actually only crocheted it so I could practice attaching the fleece blanket.
Now I just need to block it, weave in ends, and then I’ll do the sewing over the next few days. I’m a little worried I won’t be able to pull it off. I’m not very good with the sewing machine.

Thank you, Sandra—the yarn is super soft and really beautiful.

Your blanket turned out beautifully, too—are those owls?
I’m sure you’ll do a great job; you’ve already made quite a few things for Anton.

I’m not much of a sewing whiz either, but I’m good at knitting and crocheting.

Marion, you’ve got some yarn there that goes a long way.
Maybe—combined with other colors—you could whip up some dishcloths or even a blanket?

Sandra, that blanket looks great. You’ll manage to sew it together—you’ll see.

Marion: Yes, they’re owls.

I just blocked them, and I’ll probably sew them tomorrow.

I’m not working on any UFOs this month.
But today I was able to crochet a small piece. The pattern is from here; I just left a bit out.

How long does a started project have to sit around before it counts as a UFO? Is three weeks enough?

Marion: a cute little horse!

I just need to take a photo, then I’ll show you the just-landed UFO — the kindergarten bag.

I’ll take the baby sweater and the matching hat with me into September as UFOs. I’ll still need a while for those. And the new hat I started over a week ago isn’t finished yet either (but almost). There’s also a headband on the needles that will also go into September as a UFO.

So I’ll be bringing 4 UFOs in for landing in September.

Photos of the pieces I’ve started will follow.

Marion, your little horse is so cute!
I’m already looking forward to seeing Monika’s and Sofie’s pictures.
My UFO isn’t really one, though. It’s an ongoing project that I regularly set aside for 1–2 days. But blankets just take a looooot of time.

I like the little horses, too.

Here’s my entire herd that I’ve managed to make so far in August.
But there are still a few more to come.

This is my last project from August; I didn’t manage to do any more than that.
The reason was 6 kg of plums, which I turned into jam this morning. But I haven’t used them all yet.

Oh Marion, you’re in the same boat as me. I froze some of the plums and will make jam out of them later. Your little horses look absolutely adorable!

I’m bringing a few UFOs with me into September. Photos and details will follow by Monday.

Here’s finally the preschool bag—my completed UFO from August. The strap is adjustable. I came up with a really great solution. This way, the bag will fit for several years.

Monika, we have three plum trees. That means I get to make large batches of jam again—it’ll last another 2–3 years and will be used for the Linzer tarts. I’ll freeze a few portions, and the rest will stay on the tree.

I really like your kindergarten bag. Nice pattern—did you knit and crochet it too?

...Let me show you what I’ve bought this month (some of it already worked up):

I thought it would be worse.

The photo is still missing 6 yarn cakes that I ordered and that haven’t arrived yet :)

Hopefully, the bag in the picture will be finished this weekend. (It’s smaller than in the pattern, though—I used thinner yarn.)

Hi Shopping Queen Tina

that’s really not that much. Your bag looks good already.

That looks great, Tina! :-)

The preschool bag is entirely crocheted, Marion—using special stitches that give the bag good strength and structure. The yarn also contributes to that.

The bag has a double bottom, and I’ve incorporated many ideas into it. To be honest, I’m already a little proud of it, especially since I usually prefer knitting. But my granddaughter was worth the effort.

As the finishing touch, I might even embroider her name on it.

Thank you, Christina. I'm glad you like it. :-) By the way, it's suitable for girls and boys.
In the meantime, I've embroidered the name on it too, but I'm not completely happy with it yet ...

And here are my UFOs that I started this month and am taking with me into September:

The headband:

The baby sweater with hat

And the new hat for my granddaughter:

If this monthly thread didn't exist, I think quite a few things of mine would sit around for months, and the UFOs would just be buzzing around me.

I'm really very grateful for the motivation to finally finish projects I've started.

I bought yarn too, but I haven't taken a photo yet. Most of it has already been put away.

Well, and then I've already made design sketches for the next 2 projects... the vest for my husband with a cable pattern and the sleeping bag for the next grandchild. The yarn is already ready too. :-) But I've resolved to bring the UFOs in for a landing first, and to do it by September 12. That's when we're heading off on a big trip to Lake Constance. I'm really looking forward to seeing my granddaughter. 2 1/2 is such a sweet age.

No, the cake isn’t crocheted. Those are 10 five-euro bills.
Something different from the usual “gift certificate for whatever”... lol.

Marlies, how did you get those 5-euro bills on there? What’s the base made of? Surely not a real cake, right? Now I’m really curious... :-)

Monika,
I’d say the base is made of cardboard. They’re individual cake slices that are then put together. Before that, the money is attached around them.
It definitely looks great.

The idea came from a YouTube video. But since the smaller bills didn’t fit very well, I improvised. There’s Styrofoam underneath the “cake.” I pinned the lace to it with straight pins. The outer edge was shaped with adhesive tape.
While looking for a suitable glass plate, I came across this little cake dome. Of course, that was the perfect packaging.
The gift was very well received yesterday.

Marlies, that really is a fantastic masterpiece. I’m not really a passionate crafter, so such precise results have my full admiration. The same goes for the things Inna has made. I just don’t have the patience for it. I’d rather knit and crochet.

Here’s my summary for August. It’s not quite as much as before this time, but I’m still satisfied:

  • I’ve already posted the photos
  • Everything I finished this month is going to be given away.
My UFOs:
  • The preschool bag for my granddaughter is finally done.
  • Plus two scarves knitted from leftover yarn.
  • The baby sweater with the hat is still hanging around as a UFO, but it’ll be finished in September.
New projects started:
  • A hooded hat for my granddaughter
  • A headband for me
Best of the Leftovers:
  • The scarves were knitted from leftover yarn.
  • I chose a special color combination for the headband,
  • as well as for the new beanie, which isn’t finished yet.
Shopping Queen:
  • I’ve stocked up on plenty of yarn: a total of 35 skeins of merino wool and just as many skeins of cotton in various colors. Now I’m well-stocked. :-) Unfortunately, I’ve already put most of the yarn away, but I’ll take photos wherever possible.
  • Oh, and I also conquered the “unraveling monster”: my granddaughter’s hat—I unraveled quite a bit of it and reknit it because I didn’t like how it looked.
  • And of course, I’ve learned some new things again. I’ve picked up a few new knitting techniques and patterns.
  • I don’t have any unloved yarn left—I gave it all away (yay!)—and that made room for my new treasures.
  • I did almost all of my crafting in the garden or on the patio.
Well, that’s it. Now on to September. I’m already looking forward to it. :-)

Kind regards
Monika

Here’s the promised photo of the summer pants I made in August:

And these are the UFOs I’m carrying over into September:

1. A tunic meant to match the summer pants—I ran out of yarn for it, but I’ve already ordered more:

2. And another pair of summer pants in yellow, which I’ve started but am still far from finishing.
