July Projects: As always with UFO Week from July 23-August 3, Best Leftovers, Yarn Rescue, Tunisian Crochet and all the other popular activities

Dear users, dear authors,
June was great, but July is going to be a dream.

Here are the June topics to read up on:
June Projects: of course with UFO Week from June 25 to July 2, Best Leftovers,
Yarn Emperor/Yarn Diet and all the other title highlights

Final sprint and award ceremony // all June projects at a glance

Of course we have all the popular activities again in July, too. You’ll find details further down.

Photos are always a good idea.

UFO Week July 23-August 3
This time UFO Week lasts longer because of vacation season. Anyone who finishes at least one UFO is guaranteed the title.

Best Leftovers:
Anyone who uses up lots of leftover yarn will be awarded this title. The more colorful the leftover yarn, the better.

Yarn Diet in July = Yarn Emperor/Empress in July = just one month = until August 3
During this time, the voluntary diet participants won’t buy any yarn, but will only use yarn from their stash. This lets you reduce a lot of supplies and creates plenty of room for new things.

Inner Temptation Conqueror = 1 year without buying yarn.
We still have quite a few ladies who (admirably) feel up to this. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for all you ladies. Give us an update now and then.

Three Months of Yarn Diet in the Fall
The detailed yarn diet (without dieting for a whole year right away ) with
a chance at the final round for dominion over this galaxy runs from the beginning of August through October.
--> So stock up once more if you want to start your diet in August. :-)

As already mentioned, there won’t be a yarn diet in November and December so you can finish your Christmas projects. Then, logically, the final round for dominion over the universe will follow at the beginning of 2019. It starts in January 2019. I hope you’ll all join in.

Wallflower Rescue: Surely each of you still has quite a few, or even many, patterns (purchased or free, that counts too ),  that were only downloaded but never made? Anyone who gives their oldest wallflower some attention or finishes it in July will be awarded the honorary title of Wallflower Rescuer. Extra points / bonus points are, of course, awarded for feedback / comments / reviews of the pattern.

New: This is no longer called stepchild yarn or stepchild material, but stubborn yarn / stubborn material. Read more here:
Wallflower patterns and stepchild yarn / stepchild material: How’s it going?

Yarn Rescuer / Material Rescuer: This is the title of the activity where yarn / material that never really quite fits is used up. Anyone who would like a title should please upload a photo of the unloved yarn / unloved material. Of course, the yarn / respective material also has to be used appropriately and attractively. You will then be awarded Yarn Rescuer or Material Rescuer for that.

Unraveling Monster Conqueror: These are those cute little creatures that take great joy in forcing you to unravel your hard work. But you can’t really stay mad at them. :- ) Whatever the unraveling monsters don’t catch may then become a UFO. :- )
You can write down info here:
Unraveling Monster Thread: what have you unraveled and why?
-->Anyone who writes down details and info about their unraveling monsters at the end of the month
can, if they wish, be honored as an "Unraveling Monster Conqueror"

Learning something new in July and winning while you’re at it
Anyone who has learned something new in July can write it in this thread and will get compliments and the win for it.

All July Projects and all Garden Projects
There’s room here in this thread for everything you craft in July, and also for all projects you work on in the garden or on the balcony. Info and photos are always a good idea.

I’ve already started a project and hopefully I’ll finish a UFO this month.

I’d love to join in again, too. Going on a yarn diet from August to October—I can handle that with ease!
Since I want to visit Waltraud’s shop this month, it won’t happen in July... ;-)

And I actually plan to work through my stash for as long as possible starting in August. It’s enough to last at least 3 years by now. Let’s see how long I can make it.

It’s great that this thread exists and that we can admire each other’s creations here, just like in a cozy yarn room.

I’m looking forward to all the ideas each of us will bring to life in July.

I can take a picture of one of my UFOs today and share it.

I started this back in June—does that count as a UFO?

It’s supposed to be a shawl, but I’m not quite sure yet if I have enough yarn.

Oops… I actually meant to write this post here… so here goes again:

How are you all doing? How are your July projects coming along?

For me, quite a few things are now entering the final phase, for example, my color projects. I won’t be able to make a final decision until everything is finished. At the end of July—by the 27th at the latest—I’ll show you everything here.

Right now, I’m crocheting a little basket with berries; I bought the pattern from Ruth here.
In the process, I learned a new stitch—the knot stitch. I hadn’t known that one before.

As you know, I prefer knitting. But I still enjoy learning something new when it comes to crocheting. Some things are just better suited for crocheting, like the tiniest ones. It doesn’t come naturally to me, but I’m still practicing hard...

Have a wonderful sunny day, everyone!

Warm regards from Monika

I’m not going to conquer my inner slacker... I have to order some yarn. A very good friend just told me she’s pregnant... and now I have to crochet. :-))))
Oh man, I’m so happy.

Thank you so much!

The yarn has been ordered :-)))) It ended up being a bit more than expected. I wanted to qualify for free shipping, after all. It came to 40 skeins.
I hadn’t ordered any yarn since December.
Oh, it was nice to place an order again. :-)

Hi Arni,

you’ve held out for over half a year so far without buying any yarn. Congratulations! :-)
That’s a great achievement.

Look at it this way: you’ve ordered yourself some yarn as a reward now.
It’ll be like Christmas… that’s how it was for me, too.

I’m so happy for you… Kids are simply a wonderful gift. And crocheting or knitting for them is, at least for me, the most fun.

Yes, now I’m totally looking forward to my yarn too. :-)))
And for my friend, it was her dearest wish. I’m so happy for her (and for myself that I was able to order yarn. Hopefully it’ll arrive soon)

@Arni

Have fun crocheting with your new yarn for the baby on the way.

Today I finished my pot holders (crocheted in Tunisian crochet), made from “diet” yarn, of course.

Now I’m moving on to the sweater—otherwise it’ll turn into a UFO.

Marion, your pot holders look great! Tunisian crochet, and with a pattern too—you have my full admiration! Because honestly… I’d rather knit. ;-)

Sandra, I’m already curious to see what pretty things you’re preparing for the baby. You’ll definitely show us, right?

Didn’t you want to show us your colorful dress on? ;-) Or did I miss something there?

Monika, thanks for the compliment. It was really fun. Too bad you can’t get excited about Tunisian crochet.

By the way, it’s a pattern by Petra.

You’ll have to be patient a little longer for Arni’s picture. She’s supposed to post it next week, as far as I remember.

I want to give the pot holders to my brother-in-law—he’s an angler. He built himself a little kitchen in the garden, so I think they’ll fit in perfectly there.

Now that I’ve shown my neighbor my finished color projects, her suggestion helped me make up my mind. Unfortunately, I can’t show you any of it just yet. Please be patient until July 27. Then you’ll know why.

I’m totally in love with this set. :-) Ahhh....... and I’m really looking forward to showing it to you here.

But first, there’s still quite a bit to do. And I’m currently designing new hairbands. One of them is for my eldest granddaughter for her 12th birthday. I’ll be able to show you that in the next few days.

Well... and new ideas are already swirling around in my head.

Tomorrow I’ll show you my crocheted basket with the first strawberry. It looks absolutely lovely. Maybe I’ll manage to make a few more berries by then. We’ll see....

Have a wonderful Saturday evening, everyone!

Warm regards from Monika

A quick update

Today it’s 32° here. I’ve settled into the shade with my garden project.
Coffee is always a good idea, as you can see. I’ve been busy and have almost knitted up a 50g ball.
What are you all up to today in this heat?

Oh my, Marion, where do you live? 32 degrees... phew... sweating...
Luckily, it’s only 25 degrees here, and it’s very comfortable.

What will your project be once it’s finished? The yarn looks great.

I actually finished my first Christmas gift today. It’s the crocheted berry basket for my granddaughter. Right now, I don’t really want to give her such tiny things. But by Christmas she’ll be almost 3, so it’ll be fine then.

The berry basket is filled with strawberries, a blackberry, and a pair of cherries. Here’s what it looks like now:

It’s a pattern by Ruth. I limited myself to the strawberries and cherries. The other berries are too small for me. I prefer to crochet bigger things.

This project qualified me for the “Reste Beste” challenge in July, since everything is made from leftover yarn. I also used a pattern (though I did buy it new). And I’m really proud that it didn’t turn into a UFO. :-)

Monika, it's always a good idea to start Christmas gifts
early.

Your basket turned out very pretty, and your granddaughter is sure to like it.

I live in BW, about halfway between Stuttgart and Karlsruhe.
I started my project back in June; then it became a UFO because I squeezed the potholders in between.
But now I want to finish it; it’s going to be a sweater again.

Oh Marion, I can’t wait to see the finished sweater. I really like things that colorful.

Our grandchildren and their families also live in Baden-Württemberg—scattered around Lake Constance. It’s sure to be very warm there, too. I much prefer 25 degrees.

July is going much better. :-)

Crocheted the gloves with some stubborn yarn (bring on winter!)

And a friend ordered a clothespin bag. The sewn ones are better... But the crocheted one works too.

And the baby blanket for another friend is coming along as well:

Now I’m adding three little hearts, and above them I want to crochet the child’s name (if it’s not too long) and the date. Since the baby isn’t due until December, I want to sew some colored fleece underneath to make it warmer. Or do you maybe have another idea?

Wow, Sandra, you’ve been so busy! Hats off to you! :-)

The gloves look great—so colorful. And the peg bag too. By the way, that’s a really cool idea!

The baby blanket is turning out beautifully! Sewing fleece underneath is a good idea.
However, if you want it to be made entirely of natural materials, I’d use wool or cotton fabric. Or you could knit or crochet a very simple version to go with it.

Thank you very much.
Yeah, I’ll take another look at the fabric. I won’t buy it until the baby is here anyway. The color has to match the baby’s gender, and I don’t know that yet.

Anton just fell asleep, the housework is done, and I can crochet.

And then I found a few skeins of cotton in my stash. It’s not neglected yarn, because I knew right away what I was going to make from it as soon as I saw it. I crocheted a few potholders from it.

Wow, Marion, I’m thrilled! Your sweater looks gorgeous.
Did you knit it with a circular yoke? Sounds exciting… knitted and crocheted. Great!

What is that thing you crocheted out of sponge yarn? I haven’t seen that before… and I haven’t crocheted with sponge yarn yet either.

Ida and Mel, yes, you can be excited about my project. It’s already grown into a 4-piece set. I’ve been really busy. And I’m totally in love with it.

I’m just finishing up the last pattern… the photo version. And now I still have to edit the pictures. I’m not quite happy with that yet. But it’ll work out. I’m really looking forward to finally being able to present it.

It was just a spontaneous decision to join the event with the complete mother-and-child set. Mother and child in matching outfits—that’s something different. :-)

Wait and see.

Have a wonderful evening, everyone, and warm regards!

Thanks, Monika. I tried out patterns for a long time and kept unraveling everything. You just couldn’t see the pattern, and I didn’t want to knit just stockinette stitch.
Then I found an older magazine that featured this sweater—solid-colored and with long sleeves. I made a few changes, and I really like the result.

With this piece made from sponge yarn, you can massage your back or legs while showering. I saw pictures online and crocheted it to my own taste.
A friend actually wanted roses, but this yarn (it’s not the Creativ Bubble) wasn’t suitable for that at all, so that’s how the massage band came about.

I’m also curious to see what you made for the color challenge.

Well then, have a good night.

Headbands for the girls are always a good idea. And of course you need socks in your hiking boots! Now I’d be curious to know what parts of them are reinforced. Do they have a reinforced heel so it lasts longer?

2049 Posts Recent Started

The socks are reinforced with a second yarn (in my case, it was gray, since I couldn’t find a matching shade of red)—specifically, a section at the back just before the heel, then the heel, the sole, and the toe. That’s why the top of the foot is striped, since it’s knitted with just one strand, while the sole is knitted with two. It sounds more complicated than it really is…
Today I started a second pair for my husband, this time with two slightly different shades of gray—I’m curious to see how they’ll turn out!

Hello hello!
I “want” to go on a yarn diet too—simply because there’s no space left to store anything. Two very large baskets and four small baskets full of beautiful yarn, all eagerly waiting to be used..... next I’d like to crochet a hat and knook a triangular shawl—I’m still a beginner at that, though. My love of crochet has been going strong for 22 years. Well then, now it’s time to tackle the cake my mother gave me .....

Best regards

A warm welcome, Nancy. It’s great that you’re joining us now!
You’ll see, it’s so much more fun when we do this together. We motivate each other to really stick with the yarn diet.

I’m so well-stocked that I’ll definitely be able to keep it up for a loooong time starting in September. Unfortunately, I’ll have to “sin” again in August because a visit to the yarn shop is coming up. But then!

All my UFOs are finished. So I’m right on track.
The color projects are in the bag… meaning they’re done. I’ll show them to you by Friday at the latest. And new projects are in my head and on my needles. ;-)

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Love from Monika

So—I’ve finally made up my mind. For the color project starting on Friday, I actually wanted to enter a mother-and-child set.

But after giving it some thought, I’ve decided to upload the tunic on its own instead. It won’t be part of the actual color project, though.

Instead, I’ll be entering a 3-piece baby set that goes perfectly with this tunic.

For now, I’ll show you the tunic, which is nice and breezy in the summer and can be worn with a shirt or sweater underneath any time of year. This is one of my July projects. I’ll upload the pattern later in July.

Thank you, everyone! :-)

Yes, I really got a lot done in July. The baby project is still to come.

I made the tunic in shades of pink because it was actually supposed to be part of the event. Of course, it can be knitted in any color combination—even very colorful, if that’s your thing.

It’s really airy and light.

Your tunic is very pretty—beautiful summer colors.

I’ve finished the color project and am ready to go.
Right now, I’m in the process of designing a “Cragger” (a character from the Lego series “Legends of Chima”) for my grandson, which he really wants. It’s pretty tricky, because the character has to be recognizable. Unfortunately, I can’t write a pattern for it because it’s probably a licensed product. When it’s finished, I’ll post a photo of it.

@ruth

You’ve got something great planned there. I googled it because I wasn’t familiar with it at all. I’m curious now.

@Monika - extra for you
I’m crocheting a summer tunic, using a pattern from here. I’ve also started a Tunisian crochet piece. It’s a bit thicker, so it’s more for autumn.

Let’s see how far I get by the end of the month.

Great, Marion! I can’t wait to see what your amazing creations look like. You’ve still got a lot planned...

Ruth, I’m also looking forward to seeing your new character. That’s definitely a challenge. But hey, that’s exactly what we love. ;-)

@ Marion
Yeah, that didn’t mean anything to me either, and I had to Google it first :-)

I’m also looking forward to seeing your tunic. I usually don’t have that much patience for bigger projects. I prefer making smaller things—it goes faster, and you have time for something new...

Ruth: I’m really curious to see your result. I had to Google it too at first :-)

I just finished a UFO. A music box for my pregnant friend. I’d started it on a hunch back when I didn’t know she was pregnant yet. All I had to do now was buy a music box mechanism, fill it, and sew it up.

Now I just have to take it to the post office tomorrow.

So, I’ve used up a bit more leftover yarn again.
In this heat, even the drinking glasses are sweating ;)

Sandra, your music box looks great—it really suits the weather right now.

Mel, your coasters are just awesome. A really great idea for using up scraps.

I have to check in again so you don’t think I’ve disappeared. I haven’t touched my knitting in a few days—I’ve lost my enthusiasm for it right now, so I probably won’t be doing any more July projects.
My father is back in the hospital; things aren’t looking good at all, and I just don’t have the nerve for anything right now. Nevertheless, big praise to everyone!

Wow, you’ve all created such beautiful things. Sandra, your music box is adorable!
And Mel, I really love your coasters, too.

Ida, I wish you more peace and harmony in your life and hope everything works out well with your father.

Here, I’ll show you my color project—it’s also my July project. Yes, I actually managed to finish quite a bit in July.

Here’s the baby set—a little dress and a hairband with a lace pattern, plus crocheted booties

So, despite the heat, I’ve been hard at work and finished “Cragger.” I think he turned out pretty well. My grandson recognized him right away and was very happy!

Ida, I know what it’s like to wish for your father that it would all simply be over. I was very relieved then.

Should we extend UFO Week because of the summer heat?
I don’t get the impression that the UFOs can land in this heat.
Monday?

The thread for the August projects will definitely go online at the beginning of the month.

It’s okay with me. But I can also manage it by tomorrow or the day after.
I have to admit, I’m really not that motivated in this heat.

What do the others here think? We could just continue in August and take all our unfinished UFOs with us, right?

So I’ve finally finished my one UFO, and now I’m making my coasters. I made 2 yesterday, and I’m sure I’ll make 2 more today—and then the next 2 will just be part of my August project. That’s fine. And the table runner definitely has to carry over into August anyway

I still need to sew on the details for my two UFOs; I’ll definitely get that done by tomorrow or the day after. The August projects are finished and can be seen in the gallery. I’ll post them here tomorrow, or the day after at the latest.

Hi,

I’m still on my yarn diet and didn’t buy any yarn in July either.

Best regards, Heike

My UFO is already finished. Other than that, I haven’t done much this month. My current project isn’t finished yet anyway and is already for August.

It’s another one of those projects where I end up unraveling more—a real contender for the next UFO.
