Forum Game: Homemade Christmas Gifts from A to Z, Part 2. (No ads)

Dear friends, it’s time for another forum game. Many of us are currently thinking about what lovely handmade gifts we could make for our loved ones this Christmas.

So I thought we could simply share our ideas here from A to Z. That way, we can help each other find or create something special.

We’ll start with the letter A and continue through the alphabet.
Everything has to be DIY—whether it’s crocheted, knitted, sewn, or crafted, whatever you like.

I’ll start with A —and you take it from there:

Veronika, I’m also curious to see what your scarf will look like when it’s finished. It definitely looks very elegant already.

I wish you all a wonderful (late summer) weekend.

Weekend Projects, Bestsellers + Quick Mini Leftover Yarn Projects for Halloween

Now, in the cold season, toddlers (ages 3–5) are perfectly dressed in leggings. Nothing can pinch, because leggings comfortably move with every motion. They are knitted high enough at the top so that the tummy and back both stay nice and warm.

You can easily knit these leggings from sock yarn. Thanks to the initially folded-over waistband, they fit for at least 2 years. A favorite piece of my granddaughter and her parents.

These cute baby shoes are great for crocheting from small scraps. A simple pattern that you can easily make and use to make someone happy.

To make sure you have enough clothes for the dolls by Christmas, why not knit this cute summer outfit to go with them? The top is knitted raglan-style from the top down. Lots of pretty details make this outfit a real eye-catcher. Every doll mom will be thrilled. The outfit also fits dolls measuring 43–50 cm—yes, even tiny newborns.

This piece is really super practical—just slip it on and it’s warm and cozy.

Veronika, the yarn looks great once it’s knitted up. What are you going to make with it?

I’ll be starting my next project with a skein of swap yarn soon… but it’ll take a little while yet.

November Projects + October Projects 2022, Part 2: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group

Well, everyone, I’m back—after successfully recovering from the flu, I’m back to knitting. I’ve actually finished a few things in the meantime. But first, I’ll take a quick look at everything that’s been posted here...

Anja, regarding your question to us authors about how we handle it when a customer points out errors: Well, I take a close look at the pattern and am always very grateful for reported errors. In that case, I reward the person with a free pattern as a thank-you. I haven’t had to revise anything yet. Sometimes it’s enough to explain a step a little differently or more clearly. I’m glad you were able to continue with your project and that the author corrected the error. By the way, your new ball of yarn looks pretty—I’d like it, too.

Steffi, your winter landscape is turning out beautifully. I admire the patience you bring to projects like this. I like your new knitting project—it has a very interesting pattern.

Petra, that’s funny that your grandson thought the exercise was for real and now you need a hat that can be burned. But it would really be a shame to use the new hat for that. And the pillow for your son is quite the labor of love. I’m sure he was delighted. The wrist warmers are great, too, and especially the colorful pennants for little Franz. That was my father’s name, by the way.

Christina, your gifts turned out great, too. Little bears are just such a cute motif, no matter how many times you see them.

Well, now it’s my turn to show something again. The soul warmer is finally finished and is very comfortable to wear. It’s cozy and warm. I only needed half a ball more in addition to the two balls (from Ruth and Ina). Maybe I’ll knit some cuffs around the armholes—we’ll see. But I already like it just the way it is.

I’m also knitting a sweater for Linja out of colorful sock yarn. Here’s how it looks so far:

Being well dressed on a budget: how do you do it?

I love my online swap group. I’ve been able to snag some really nice, high-quality items there many times. I knit everything made of wool myself, and I usually get the wool from the swap group, too.

That way, I can trade my own nice clothes—the ones I don’t wear anymore or that no longer fit—for others. It’s been working great for many years now.

A little dress that grows with your child—from baby to 3-year-old toddler: what knitting grandma or mom wouldn’t be happy about that? This little dress offers exactly these advantages.

It has pretty details. The skirt features a knitted-in heart pattern. The straps can be adjusted and later removed completely. The little dress is knitted in one piece from the bottom up.

This fluffy, warm baby jacket plus hat is knitted from slightly thicker sock yarn. The pretty pattern looks good from both sides. This pattern is recommended for advanced knitters, as you do have to pay a bit of attention to the pattern.

The set fits approx. 3–12 months.

My Favorite Fall Cake

Oh Ina, I’d love to be your guest right now. That looks sooo delicious—my mouth is already watering...

My favorite cake this time of year is the sheet pan gingerbread, which I’ve featured here before. I’ll be making that again soon. In the next few days, I’m going to try a brand-new recipe I found online that I really like. An apple cake with rolled oats and walnuts.

By the way, I’m the same way—I have a much bigger appetite for cake in the fall and winter. In the summer, I’m more into homemade ice cream.

Dollhouse from my great-grandpa :)

Oh wow, Veronika, that’s really something special. The furniture reminds me of my favorite aunt’s—I used to love visiting her. There are so many little details to look at in yours, too. Even a birdcage! The curtains, the wallpaper, the rug... simply enchanting. And then, of course, the little bears. It’s a shame I don’t have my dollhouse anymore. My dad had built and wallpapered it himself back then. My mom sewed the curtains and the bedding. Sigh...

Handmade Christmas Magic for Children

What could be nicer than handmaking new clothes for a doll mommy’s favorite? For me, it’s always a highlight. My two granddaughters keep asking for new clothes, and of course they’ll get some from me for Christmas too.

How about this colorful knitted cardigan in a mix of patterns? It is worked with raglan from the top down, using various colorful leftovers. There is also a matching hat in the same colors, which is very easy to knit.

The clothing fits dolls measuring 43-50 cm.

Go to the knitting pattern here.

You can make a toddler very happy with this sleeping bag for a stuffed animal or a doll up to 20 cm tall. Maybe there’ll even be a new doll or teddy inside it under the Christmas tree?

With the pattern, you can knit two different sleeping bags. Both are also suitable for beginners. The sleeping bags are easy for toddlers to put on and take off.

new weekend projects // popular bestsellers // colorful leftover-/leftover yarn projects + little Halloween items

Knitting for small dolls (35–40 cm) is always a great joy. You can even use up smaller leftovers beautifully. Every doll mommy—whether big or small—will cheer when there are new clothes for her favorites. That’s probably not tied to any age. :))

This little jacket is knitted with raglan from the top down, which guarantees a good fit. With the pattern, it’s really easy. There’s also a matching hat with a little tie at the top.

Click here for the knitting pattern

This diaper can also be crocheted very well from small leftovers. The doll mommy will be just as happy, because her baby doll (43–50 cm) naturally needs a diaper too. It is well suited for toddlers thanks to the hook-and-loop fastener, which is easy to open and close.

It’s best to crochet a little supply right away, because one certainly won’t be enough.

Oh yes, I remember that too, even though—thankfully—it was only for a short time. I hated it and was glad when pantyhose came along later. My mom, though, kept wearing her stockings with garters for quite a while. I never understood that.

Dollhouse from my great-grandpa :)

Wow, Tina, I’m absolutely delighted with your dollhouse. Such beautiful details. How wonderful that you were able to keep it. I love dollhouses and doll rooms, and I used to love playing with them as a child. An 80-year-old friend of mine also has a big house like that, which her father built a long time ago. Even today, every time I visit, I’m still tempted to play with it.

You really don’t see such loving handiwork very often these days.

Ruth, I also think the idea of using the shelf as a makeshift dollhouse is great.

Blanket Made from Leftover Yarn

Hi LittleSunshine697,

I definitely wouldn’t make the blanket using yarns of different thicknesses and qualities. That could also cause problems when washing, since every type of yarn behaves differently.

At least, that’s my advice.

You can make a lot with just one skein. As the cooler season begins, a scarf is one of the most important pieces of clothing—especially if it can also be used as a collar. It’s the perfect accessory for low-cut clothing, keeping your neck and nape nice and warm.

The collar-and-scarf combo is very easy to knit. It has a button placket at the front and is otherwise knitted like a round collar.

What doll mom—whether big or small—wouldn’t be thrilled to get new clothes for her little darling? Using colorful leftover yarn, I knitted this jacket with a matching hat for small dolls (35–40 cm). Knitting raglan from the top makes it very easy and eliminates the need for seams. The dolls look adorable in them, and it’s really fun to knit things like this.

It’s sure to be a hit as a Christmas gift, too. This way, leftover yarn can be used up and given away with great joy.

To go with it, you can knit—also using colorful leftover yarn—a complete outfit set for the little dolls (35–40 cm). A sweater with matching pants, which you can knit with or without feet. The hat can be knitted with or without a pom-pom, and there are also two versions of the sweater.

This is sure to make every doll mom’s heart sing. What could be better!?

Do you have some leftover sock yarn (about 50 g)? How about knitting a loop scarf? It’s nice and fluffy and soft, and it’s really easy to knit—even for beginners who have the basic skills, such as knitting a simple lace pattern.

No matter what yarn you want to use, anything is possible here. Using your gauge, you can calculate any width you want. And of course, you get to decide the height yourself.

This is a wonderful way to use up leftover yarn and treat yourself or a loved one.

Crafting Christmas Gifts

Even very simple Christmas gifts can bring joy. If you're still fairly new to knitting, you can certainly manage to knit such a lovely heartfelt gift.

This cloth clearly shows that it comes from the heart. It can be knitted as a washcloth, dishcloth, or, with thicker cotton, even as a potholder. You're sure to enjoy making it and already imagine how the recipient will feel.

Here’s the knitting pattern

You can give this sweet, colorful little raglan dress to a little princess aged 2. Children love things nice and colorful, and you can creatively work some leftover yarn into the little dress.

The little dress grows with the child and can later still be worn as a tunic.

The knitting pattern is here.

Sweaters, Shawls, Tops + Blankets: Staying Warm Can Be So Beautiful

This poncho cape made from fluffy, soft sock yarn keeps you wonderfully warm and is very easy to knit. It also leaves your arms free. On the one hand, this kind of garment is very comfortable, and on the other, you don’t sweat in it as easily.

Many garments can be knitted from sock yarn—by no means just socks. The advantage is that they wash well and, thanks to the high virgin wool content, keep you nice and warm without being too thick. It has proven especially useful for children’s clothing.

This sweater fits 2- to 3-year-olds and is easy to knit. It has virtually no seams and, thanks to the collar, also keeps the neck nicely protected.
