Canning for the Modern Homemaker

Dear Ina, you don’t know how big our appetites are. I usually cook enough for two days, especially when we’re having red cabbage. We always need a large jar for that. I still have a few left. Otherwise, I only have small ones for jam, which I also make from frozen fruit. Next, I’ll be filling the slightly smaller jars with spreads—bell pepper and eggplant spreads. We love both of them very much, and they’re quick to make in the Thermomix.

Best regards
Monika

Wow, what beautiful glimpses into your garden, Ina.
And your house, Steffi, looks really lovely. I really love houses covered in vines like that, too.

It’s Akela’s birthday // free patterns as a gift

Dear Inge,

I’d also like to wish you a very happy birthday from the bottom of my heart and send you my very best wishes. Good health, of course, and lots of joy with all your beautiful creations. Keep the sun in your heart, even when life gets stormy and tough. The sun will lift you up again, warm you, and give you strength.

It’s wonderful that you’re here and that you make so many people—young and old—happy.

Warm regards
Monika

Oh wow, Ina, the jars look pretty small in the picture. Well, I’ll see what I have. So you managed to fit 5 jars into one canning session. Sounds good. Thanks for the update.

Wow, Ina, I can practically smell and taste that from here. It’s making me hungry just thinking about it. I definitely have to try that too. How big are your jars? I assume you had them all in the pot at once.

Yarn Sale: Can You Stay Strong?

Oh, great, Ina—now I know who donated this beautiful wool. Your felted slippers look really lovely and cozy with it, too. You know I love these shades. And I really like how the blue goes with it.

The new shipment arrived today. One skein in colorful shades of orange—and no, not blue, but a dark red—will be knitted into the rest of the project. So that’s going to look interesting. In any case, the soul warmer can now be nice and long and warm. I’ll probably knit sleeves onto it, too. If there’s a lot of leftover yarn, I’ll knit a jacket for Juna out of it.

November Projects + October Projects 2022, Part 2: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group

I’ve since kicked my perfectionism when it comes to crafts. I tell myself now that every craft project has a flaw somewhere—it’s just part of the deal. ;-)

Andrea, your coasters look great. You’re all set for summer.

Yes, the “soul warmer.” Ruth, I guess that’s your yarn. Yeah, I’ve had that lying around for a while. I just liked it so much. The new shipment arrived today. I reordered the orange-colored yarn, but instead of blue, I got dark red yarn to go with it. So part of the “soul warmer” will have more red tones instead of blue ones. It’ll definitely look interesting. By the way, I’ve almost used up those two skeins, so the new yarn came at just the right time.

Fall is beautiful

Wow, you have some beautiful artwork to admire here. I’m amazed!

Petra, do you do your embroidery freehand? How do you manage to make it so even? Amazing!

Johansi, your embroidered pictures are truly something special. I really love them. I’ve never seen anything like this before. And the pumpkins—they’re a dream! They’re making me hungry just looking at them.

Inge, every time we go for a drive these days, I can’t help but admire the scenery. It’s just so beautiful to take in this spectrum of colors.

I wish you all a wonderful, colorful weekend!

Fall is beautiful

The cherry laurel in our garden is just as colorful as Petra’s. I’m thrilled by it every year. I took some photos in our garden today.

The fig tree is starting to change color, too.

Our strawberries are turning colorful, yet they’re still bearing fruit.

November Projects + October Projects 2022, Part 2: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group

So many beautiful things have been created here again.

First of all, get well soon, Ruth. Take it easy and recover properly. Your passion for crafts is back, which is a good sign. Your Secret Santa idea is great.

Petra, the birthday gift for your daughter is just so cute. It’s something special, and she’ll definitely be thrilled. The pillow for your son looks great, too.

Sandra, you always whip up such special gifts. What a lovely idea—the heart with the little doves for the silver wedding anniversary. I would’ve loved that, too. I also like your cuddly pillow.

Andrea, the shawl you crocheted from the vacation yarn cake looks great, too. The colors worked out really well.

I’m currently knitting a soul warmer from yarn I got in a swap. It’s my first one, and I’m really looking forward to wearing it. I have no idea who I have to thank for this beautiful yarn. I’m totally in love with it. Since it was going to be tight with just those two skeins, of course, I had to buy two more. Yes, just two skeins, because I found a shop that offers free shipping on orders over 10 euros. That works out great for me, since I have plenty of other yarn that needs to be used up first.

Here’s how it looks so far:

I’m going to knit a colorful sweater for Linja out of sock yarn—I’m working on the gauge swatch right now. And then I have another idea for a doll project. But that still needs to simmer a bit.

Have a great weekend: do you have sunshine?

I’d also like to wish you all a wonderful weekend!

The sun has been shining here the last few days, though not as much today—but it was still pleasant outside. Tomorrow is supposed to be a bit cloudy and rainy, but Sunday will be nice again. We’re planning to take a long walk in the woods and go to the flea market at noon. I’m really looking forward to that—I’ve missed it for the past two years.

new weekend projects // fantastic bestsellers // colorful + beautiful + affordable leftover-/leftover yarn projects + Halloween highlights

A baby who’s just starting to crawl needs warm winter clothes that are comfortable and can still accommodate a thick diaper. Leggings are just the thing.

These leggings are knitted from sock yarn and fit the body perfectly. Yes, they even grow with the baby for a while. My granddaughter wore them when she was a few months old and still wore them at age 2. At first, they are folded up at the bottom.

The leggings are quite easy to knit if you have some knitting experience.

Swap Package – These Creations Came Out of It, Part 2

Steffi, what you’re making with that yarn already looks really good. I’m also curious to see how it turns out.

I now have yarn from two swap packages on my needles for a soul warmer. It’s the first one I’ve ever knitted. I’ve totally fallen in love with this yarn—it’s sooo cozy, soft, and warm. However, I had to reorder two more skeins because I want a long soul warmer.

Now I’m not sure who I have to thank for this amazing yarn. In any case, it’s a dream! And I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you for including it in the package.

Yarn Sale: Can You Stay Strong?

Yes, that’s how it is when you fall in love with a particular yarn. That’s exactly what has happened to me now. From two swap packages, I now have two skeins of yarn on my needles that go well together color-wise. The yarn is simply heavenly! And I’m already really looking forward to the soul warmer that will come from it.

That’s exactly why I need more now and have reordered the yarn. The soul warmer is supposed to be nice and long.

I probably would never have ordered this yarn if I hadn’t seen it in person in the swap package.

I’ll show you the photo here:

Creative Ways to Use Up Leftover Yarn / Yarn Scraps / Leftovers

You can make a child who is a doll mom with a doll baby (43–50 cm) very happy with a crocheted diaper like this. One will definitely not be enough. And that’s how lots of colorful leftover yarn turns into pretty diapers. Toddlers can handle them wonderfully too, since the diaper has Velcro closures.

It’s very easy to make.

Dolls, stuffed animals, toys: start crafting now

With this bag, you can make a toddler happy. It’s very easy to attach to a Puky, tricycle, or balance bike. That way, the stuffed animal can come along for the ride, or lots of treasures can be collected during walks. My granddaughters absolutely loved this bag.

The bag is very sturdy because it has a double bottom and is crocheted using a dense stitch technique. So you’ll need to be an experienced crocheter.

The little doll baby (43–50 cm) wants to have just as pretty clothes as a real baby. This little cardigan with the matching hat is knitted in raglan from the top down. The doll’s mom will definitely be thrilled and might even want more of them.

The baby looks absolutely adorable in this little pinafore dress. It fits perfectly and still fits at 18 months. The little dress is worked from the bottom up. A heart pattern is knitted into the lower part. The buttonholes are worked into the ribbing so that the straps can be adjusted with several buttons. This little dress has already brought joy to many customers.

What do you do with single socks?

If one of my socks gets worn through and the other one doesn’t, I still wear it with another one—in bed. I can’t sleep without socks. But I think the idea of wearing them during the day is great. I’ll do that from time to time too, because I think it’s fun.

Yarn Sale: Can You Stay Strong?

Wow, Steffi, that’s quite an achievement!

Well, when it comes to special offers this year, I actually managed to click away quickly, even though it took a lot of willpower. I thought about my wonderful stash and what I could make with it.

However… I’ve now had to buy wool twice. For one project, I didn’t have the right yarn, or rather, I wanted to fulfill my granddaughter’s color requests. I’m right in the middle of the other project and have now realized to my horror (grin) that I don’t have enough yarn. So I had to reorder two skeins.

Buuut… I actually only ordered TWO skeins in each case! Luckily for me, I’ve finally found a yarn shop where I get free shipping on orders of 10 euros or more. That’s obviously very convenient for me.

I was originally planning to knit wrist warmers with it, but since hats are always in demand and I had some leftover blue yarn of similar quality, I decided to make a hat instead.

I think it’s great, too—it’s actually incredibly beautiful and warm, really cozy. If neither of my two candidates wants it, I’ll keep it for myself. I really love it. Thanks for the great yarn, Ina.

With these heart-shaped washcloths—or dish towels—you can spread joy, because they truly come “from the heart.” You’ll also have a lot of fun knitting them.

The heart motif is designed to look very three-dimensional. It’s very easy to follow, since it’s a straight piece consisting only of knit and purl stitches. You can easily work from a stitch chart. The cloths can be knitted with any yarn of your choice.

I’m sure you can think of plenty of loved ones for whom you can knit this heart-shaped gift.

Since Halloween is just around the corner, I’m crocheting these little ghosts. For a change—at least for me—they’re not spooky, but good ghosts that protect their owners. They’re always very popular, especially with children, because they get these ghosts as gifts when they ring the doorbell.

The ghosts are very easy and quick for beginners to crochet from leftover yarn. You can be very creative here, because the faces can of course be designed individually—spooky or friendly, just as you like. Just let your imagination run wild.

For hanging, you can crochet a loop or crochet in a key ring. Of course, they can also be hung up as “protectors” in the car or taken along as bag charms.

Such amazing creations have been made here again—you’re all fantastic!

Andrea, that little Christmas pouch is very pretty. I’m sure you already know who’s getting it, right? And your doilies look great, too.

Steffi, your vest/jacket—a masterpiece! I thought the bit about your back screaming was the funniest.

Ruth, you keep spoiling your grandchildren by granting their wishes again and again. You really did a great job with it.

To everyone with “back pain” or other discomforts, I wish you a speedy recovery. I’ll add myself to that list—I had a somewhat unpleasant dental procedure yesterday, and I’m still feeling the effects.

I’ve finished something else, too. I knitted myself a cowl on the side using very soft sock yarn. I needed it a bit tighter and in different colors than usual.

My next project is a hat made from swap yarn. I don’t know yet who’ll get it. First, I’ll finish knitting it.

And then I’ll be working on doll clothes using the beautiful, colorful yarn from the swap package. After that, it’ll be Juna and Linja’s turn—one needs a sweater, the other a cardigan. I already have the measurements.

Top 3 Authors // September 2022

Currently, the following 3 models are the most popular in my shop:

Top 1 - Sweater for teddy bears and dolls in several sizes

With this pattern, you can dress dolls of various sizes and also teddy bears warmly - from 25-30 cm up to a size of approx. 50 cm. The sweater is knitted top-down with raglan shaping and explained simply. For this, you can gladly go through your leftover stash and use it up beautifully. This is also a tip for a Christmas gift, because doll moms, big and small, are always happy to have new clothes.

The knitting pattern is here.

Top 2 - Leggings for toddlers ages 3-5 made from sock yarn

Now it’s the time of year again when little ones need to be dressed warmly when playing outside. Leggings like these are ideal, because they allow plenty of freedom of movement and fit close to the body. They are also knitted quite high on the body so the tummy and back stay warm.

The leggings are easy to knit, from top to bottom in one piece.

Here’s the knitting pattern

Top 3 - Knitting socks brilliantly simply - with 3 needles

If you haven’t felt like trying the normal sock heel so far, then I have a really easy solution for you here. With this pattern, you can outfit your family with socks and you’ll be amazed at how easy it is. In addition, knitting with the CraSyTrio makes the work easier for you. It’s much easier to handle than a set of double-pointed needles. However - if you prefer knitting with a set of double-pointed needles, you can make these socks too.

The knitting pattern is here

_________________________________________________________________________

The 3 most popular models overall in my shop are these:

Top 1 - The socks with the mowi heel (see previous Top 3)

Top 2 - The colorful skirt for toddlers ages 3-4

Not only did my granddaughters have great fun with this skirt, but many other users did too. It really is easy to knit from top to bottom and looks simply enchanting when worn. A really wonderful project for colorful leftover yarn that can be used up creatively here.

The knitting pattern is here

Top 3 - The convertible pinafore dress for toddlers from 1.5 years - grows with them for a long time

This convertible pinafore dress is also very popular. It fit my granddaughter until she turned 5. The straps can be adjusted, and later they are replaced with a cord.

The pinafore dress is easy to knit in one piece from top to bottom. It has knitted-in little hearts that are very simply knitted with knit and purl stitches. You’ll enjoy making it, and the little princess will too.

The knitting pattern is here.

Bestsellers for a nice evening in front of the TV

These leggings for toddlers from 1.5 years old are easy to knit in front of the TV. They are knitted in one piece from top to bottom, always in rounds, so they’re very simple. You only need to pay a little attention at the gusset and at the top when starting the waistband.

The leggings are designed to fit for a long time. At first, the leg cuffs at the bottom are folded up; later they fit just right. My granddaughters were still wearing these pants at age 3.

The yarn I used has the weight of regular sock yarn. So if you like knitting with sock yarn, that works here too.

You can find the knitting pattern here.

With this cloth featuring a peace dove motif, you’ll enjoy knitting it right from the start. You can knit it as a potholder, washcloth, or dishcloth; depending on the thickness of the cotton, anything is possible.

The peace dove is designed so that it appears as a relief on the cloth. It makes a wonderful gift, and you’re sure to receive compliments. In any case, you’ll be making a statement for peace—and that’s something we all wish for.

The pattern is very easy to follow.
