What do you do with single socks?

Dear users, dear authors,
what do you do with socks without a match? Do you repurpose them somehow?

I always buy the same color and quality for my husband. That way, later on, when a sock wears out, I can match the remaining one with another to make a new pair. Until then, I just collect them.

Knitted socks are so uniquely colorful that none of them dares to disappear on its own. I’ll find them!

I sometimes repurpose my grandchildren’s single socks or socks that have become too small into cuffs for sewn children’s clothes.

Best regards, Ina

If, contrary to expectations, I do end up with a lone sock and its twin simply can’t be found anymore, I put a sturdy cardboard disc with a slit in the middle into the cuff at the top and give it to my grandchildren as a savings sock, often with a little starter money inside.

Best regards, Inge

We do it the same way as Ina. My husband has lots of matching socks, so there are always some that go together—sooner or later, anyway.

I wear colorful socks. Last year, I accidentally bought two totally different socks as a pair—I thought four socks meant two pairs. Since then, I’ve been uninhibited. Anything that’s on its own and finds a somewhat matching partner gets worn together.

Surprisingly, our washing machine doesn’t eat socks, so I never end up with any left over. But the ones that have gotten thin and faded go into a bag along with old T-shirts and scraps of fabric and wool, and eventually end up as stuffing for decorations, stuffed animals, and things like that.

As for missing socks—or the lone ones—I usually set them aside for now and wait. Maybe they’ll find their way back during the next load of laundry.
That’s why I always wash all my socks in a laundry bag. Nothing gets lost that way.

Otherwise, you can make those sock figures. I haven’t tried that yet, though. Since I have a lot of bright-colored socks, the loners are great for making Barbie clothes, hair ties, and the like, or you can stuff them with stuffing and turn them into dolls.

I often buy a “big pack” of socks—all the same color and quality—so I always have enough, even if one mysteriously disappears.
In the family where I worked several years ago, we collected the odd socks in a basket.... With four kids, quite a few ended up there, and then we’d sit on the living room floor and play “Sock Memory”.... The little ones thought it was funny 😂

Uh, I wear them.... The people around me and my patients are always checking what socks I have on because they’re usually different.

Sometimes I even buy them specifically so I can mix and match them.

I keep all my single socks in a (now quite full) bag... Always hoping that the other one will turn up again someday. It never happens—but as they say, hope dies last! :)

But the idea of repurposing them or using them as a money-saving sock is a great one! I’ll keep that in mind! For those hopeless cases that have been waiting for their match for years.

Now that the kids have moved out or are grown up, I hardly ever find single socks anymore. Sometimes, though, if one has a hole in it. The cotton socks go into the cleaning supply box. I don’t repurpose them—they’re not pretty enough for that anymore. What about the hand-knitted ones? I’m still looking for ideas for those.
I like Akela’s idea of using them as a money-saving sock. 👍

Turn them into sock monsters, or cut them into rings and use them as hair ties.

If one of my socks gets worn through and the other one doesn’t, I still wear it with another one—in bed. I can’t sleep without socks. But I think the idea of wearing them during the day is great. I’ll do that from time to time too, because I think it’s fun.

Our daughter basically only wears mismatched socks, and my husband and I also only ever wear the identical socks from multipacks. Last year, I made little gnomes out of single wool socks and pink cotton socks, as shown in the photo

That’s such a cool idea… I would never have thought of that. Sock-hat gnomes… 😂👍

Dear Mel, the elf is great. The yellow beard is cool.

A friend of mine once made me a snowman out of a tennis sock—I’ll be using it again for my Christmas decorations.

Wow, Mel, that’s a brilliant idea! The little elf looks so cute. I would never have thought of that.
