last-minute Valentine's Day + Carnival: use up leftover yarn

You can easily knit a little bag like this before Valentine’s Day. Maybe even two. Or three. They’re quick to knit and are perfect for using up some leftover yarn. And then you can use the bag to wrap gifts.

You’ll find the pattern here.

Tips for, or against, stubborn UFOs

Josefa, I don’t think you’d want to adopt my UFOs. You’d have to untangle them first :-)
My strategy for stubborn UFOs is always to simply not look at them.

Dishcloths are also a great way to knit up leftover cotton yarn. That sense of achievement won’t be long in coming.

Here’s the pattern.

You always have small gifts to wrap now and then. For that, you can use small, hand-knitted little bags. They’re a great way to put leftover sock yarn to good use.

Find it here

Or also in the version with hearts for more experienced knitters

IWinter isn’t over yet, and a headband comes in handy when it’s cold. For mine, I used 50m of merino wool with a yardage of 105m per 50g. The headband is easy to knit—all you need to know is how to do knit and purl stitches.

You can find the pattern here.

These bracelets are also knitted from leftover cotton yarn, in two colors. They’re perfect as a small gift or to wear yourself.

If you have lots of little cotton scraps left over, you can knit bookmarks from them. You’ll need about 20 meters for one. They’re also a lot of fun to knit and are finished in a flash. A large knitting chart makes it easy to follow.

You can find the pattern here.

I have to agree with Monika on that! Sometimes my fingers have been itching like crazy, especially within about a 100-meter radius of the yarn shop :-)

Oh, you know, it’s not so much the chaos that wears you down. It’s more what comes after—and that’s something you can’t change.

Happy with January?

That would be great if your crystal ball were right. Somehow I’m completely drained and terribly tired. My mom is still in the hospital—it’s one drama after another. Most recently, she caught the flu, so she couldn’t come home. At least my dad is being taken care of now, but even there, there are constant upsets and unexpected events due to his dementia. There’s a new mess almost every day. It’s never boring. But it takes a toll on my energy—especially my mental energy.

Dear Josefa, yes, I took part in the “Yarn Diet.” I didn’t buy any yarn all month. I’m definitely not the UFO Queen, though, because I didn’t start the shawl until January.

quick successes for beginners and advanced crafters

Little gift bags always come in handy, since there are so many occasions when you want to give someone a gift. Of course, for a true handmade enthusiast, making the packaging yourself is part of the deal.
These little bags are knitted from leftover sock yarn. That makes them ideal for using up leftovers, too. They are colorful, easy to knit, and fun to make.

You can find the pattern here.

A quick knitting project that’s also very useful is a bath mitt. It features a simple pattern that’s livened up a bit by the border at the top.

You can find the pattern here.

My original is made from a cotton-linen blend with a yardage of 95 meters per 50 grams. A small scrap in a contrasting color is enough for the border.

For people who absolutely can't wait to finish, I recommend using thicker yarn. You'll be at least twice as fast!
An item that is knitted with very thick yarn is this infinity scarf. It has a simple pattern made up only of knit and purl stitches, and you can knit it almost in your sleep. Definitely suitable for beginners too! Before you know it, you'll have that sense of achievement!

Lace Shawls / Lace Patterns

This infinity scarf features a simple lace pattern and comes in short and long versions, both with and without buttons. All of this is described in the pattern. You'll need thicker yarn for it (yardage 70 m per 50 g) and 5.5 mm needles.

You can find the pattern here.

“November Rain” is a triangular shawl with a lace pattern. This shawl is also knitted from sock yarn. The pattern is written out row by row and also shown in knitting charts. Spring is coming soon, but you could also knit yourself an “April Rain” shawl.

Valentine’s Day: Get Started Now

They say the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. For foodies in love, I have a potholder with knitted-in hearts here. It is knitted using the double-face technique, which means that the colors are exactly mirrored on the opposite side. Not exactly easy, but a very rewarding project. With two leftover balls of cotton yarn, you’re all set.

New in January + December 29/30/31

I’m sneaking in a little pattern here. A wash mitt is quick to knit and also makes a lovely gift idea if you ever need a little something to bring along. A colorful border turns it into a splash of color in the bathroom.

I’m currently in a moral dilemma. Does the “yarn diet” rule still apply if you don’t buy any yarn yourself but receive some as a gift?

This handbag is as blue as the deep sea. With it, you can embark on an imaginary dive. There are even fish swimming in it.
This bag is knitted from cotton in two colors—preferably with one of them being blue. There’s a knitting chart for the fish. Finally, the handles are crocheted.

Triangular Shawls and Stoles: Shop Now

A crocheted lace shawl in a triangular shape is “Feathery,” a feather-light shawl when crocheted with lace yarn. However, you can also use other yarns. You can crochet the shawl in any size you like. When you run out of yarn or feel that it’s enough, you simply stop. The crochet pattern is shown in a crochet chart, but is also written out row by row.

Downloaded patterns.

I don’t think switching to another crochet website will solve your problem. Patterns are written by individuals, and they all have different views on how much—or how little—should go into a pattern. Some write 60-page patterns, while others write 3-page ones, and I assume that’s the same on all platforms.
When it comes to the length of a pattern, you’ll get as many answers as there are people. If the pattern is kept short, someone will complain that it’s too short; if the pattern is long, other people will think it’s unnecessary. For some, the font is too small; for others, it’s too large. Some would prefer fewer pictures, while others would like to see plenty of them.
To solve the problem with printer ink: could you perhaps copy the text from the PDF and save it in a text file? Also, most printers have a setting that allows you to print in color or black and white.
