The current campaigns from February 2018
Learn Tunisian crochet for free / it’s easy when we do it together
Leftovers become the Best-of-the-Leftovers // UFO Week February 21–28 // Yarn Diet // all February projects

Dear users, dear designers,
since the previous thread has grown overwhelmingly long, I’m opening a separate thread for the awards ceremony for the UFO Kings/Queens and Yarn Emperors/Empresses.

So this thread is only for the final success reports after work completed (UFO Kings/Queens ) and a successfully completed yarn diet (Yarn Emperors/Empresses ). Maybe it will also motivate you to keep at it during the final sprint.

Chats etc. can continue in this thread.
Yarn diet until the end of January + UFO Week from January 24–31 + show January projects (No advertising )
Both campaigns end on January 31.

After that we’ll start using up yarn scraps, with a chance at the title Best-of-the-Leftovers, and anyone who wants to can learn Tunisian crochet here in the forum.

Honorary title:
Unfortunately, Marlies / dievomDeich can’t take part in the campaigns because of pain, and is therefore honorary UFO Queen / Yarn Empress. There will be more campaigns where you can win. I wish you a good and speedy recovery.

Thank you to everyone who joined in and cheered along. It was wonderful to read all of you with so much enthusiasm. It’s always lovely to read your success reports. I always think all the photos are great, too.

I hadn’t expected such a big response. You are the best.

UFO Kings/Queens:
CarosverrueckteHaekelwelt finished a UFO; the sleeping bag for the Butterfly Children campaign, plus a keepsake for the parents, turned out sensationally, and on top of that it’s for a good cause. Of course that is rewarded with the title UFO Queen (with big hearts ). I’m glad you were part of it. Congratulations on your well-deserved win. With the enchanting angel she added even more, and this UFO turned out wonderfully, too. And there were even more cute little amigurumi. Wow, someone really threw herself into UFO Week. Big compliments.

Marion / Wollefaden absolutely earned the title UFO Queen with the little handicraft bucket. Colorful and wonderful. My congratulations. Plus sweaters, sponges, and little horses from diet yarn: the hard work paid off.

Mowi19 earned the title UFO Queen as well by finishing the sweet amigurumi tissue pouch + round collar / wrist warmers. Very cute. Congratulations to you, too. Someone was really diligently working through that diet yarn.

Pe-Ka truly earned the title UFO Queen with the cozy blanket in patchwork style. No wonder the blanket is getting so much applause as a gift.

ChristinaE was deservedly crowned UFO Queen with a total of four UFOs. My congratulations. That deserves extra praise and, of course, the UFO Queen title for you. The snowmen are simply stunning.

Haekeltrulla / Heike was extremely busy in January and easily secured the title UFO Queen with her creative idea of the poncho blanket. Great job.

Mifas won the title UFO Queen with the scrunched basket. There’s room for a lot in it. Nice that it’s finished.

Yarn Emperors/Empresses:
Applause for all Yarn Emperors/Empresses who outdid themselves with the yarn diet.
Congratulations to Mowi19, Wollefaden, Arni, CarosverrueckteHaekelwelt, PeKa, and Haekeltrulla.
Your January projects are truly impressive and your discipline is admirable.

Krea_Tina also stuck with the yarn diet. Nicely done. My compliments.

ChristinaE also completed the yarn diet, but isn’t in the final round for world domination. Well, don’t worry about it—working up baby yarn hopefully makes up for that very nicely. And with gloves, the wrist warmers, the two little snowmen, the rose bath sponges, and the pansy bookmark, you got a lot used up.

And Iglinz also bravely kept at it and completed the yarn diet. Wonderfully done. Congratulations on becoming a Yarn Emperor/Empress.
--> If you keep going until April, you won’t just be in the final round for world domination, you’ll also be absolutely unbeatable. Hang in there, you can do it.

It’s nice that these projects here also encourage communication with the partners of the Kings/Queens and Emperors/Empresses. :- ) Partners of users and designers are very welcome to join in and earn titles as well.

I haven’t bought or ordered any yarn this month yet. I’m determined to stick with it this time.

And I have a project for the UFO Queen challenge, too. The blanket has been finished for over a year—except for the border. I started that in the summer but then set it aside again. This is exactly the right project for this time.

@ Marlies / dievomDeich
Congratulations on the honorary title—I think you’ve earned it!!!
Because it’s absolutely frustrating when that stupid pain has you in its grip.
I wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to having you back as an active participant—hang in there until then.

This time I won’t be participating in any challenges, because I actually don’t have any UFOs (just a new project I’ve started)—I’m using up some leftover yarn, but only small amounts.

Good luck to everyone else—may your UFOs come in for a landing and may your “diet” be a success :)

Best, Petra

Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. An honorary title like this really motivates me to keep going.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for everyone else (just barely managing that… wink) for the final stretch. I can’t wait to see all the beautiful things you’ve created.

Warm regards,
Marlies

@Marlies,
the “Yarn Diet” will be repeated after Easter, and the UFO campaign takes place monthly.
As soon as you’re feeling better, you can jump right back in.

Marlies,

Congratulations on your honorary titles—you’ve earned them.

A UFO has landed at my place.
Here’s a before-and-after photo.

Caro, your sleeping bag is so cute! :-)
And Wollefaden, your storage basket turned out really beautiful, too.

I also managed to finish a UFO that’s been sitting around since last summer. Thanks to this campaign, I finally finished it. It’s actually a test piece for an idea.

Here’s the picture from yesterday:

And here’s what it looks like now:

I took the whole day today to work on it, and it was really fun.

Best, Monika

Also, I’ve used up a lot of yarn and haven’t bought any new yarn. I have to say, I’m really enjoying making space and turning my wonderful stash into beautiful projects. I’m still gathering the photos and will post them here tomorrow.

Have a wonderful evening, everyone! I’m already looking forward to the next UFO landing.

I’ve been abstaining since December, and this week I’ve already finished my second UFO. The second wing didn’t fit properly and still isn’t perfect. But I like her this way

A very cute little angel :-)
I’m currently in a moral dilemma. Does the “yarn diet” rule still apply if you don’t buy any yarn yourself but receive some as a gift?

Hmm. Did you know about it, and were you allowed to choose it? Otherwise, I don’t think it’s your fault.
At least that’s my opinion.

Thanks, guys—that puts my mind at ease. I got this beautiful alpaca yarn for Christmas, and because I liked it so much, I just got some more. Totally out of the blue! I didn’t want to say I’d wait until February to use it :-)

My results so far from the “Yarn Diet” (I’ve already posted the UFO).

In January, I used up my “diet yarn” and haven’t bought any more yarn since December ... *pats self on the back*. Here are the individual results so far, as far as they’re finished:

The dress from the color challenge and a matching headband:

Then this yarn (3 photos) transformed into (now 11) tissue pouches and cowls:

In the meantime, I’m already using the mini scraps from that for “Scrap February” ;-) ...

Then I turned this merino wool into two pairs of wrist warmers:

And then there’s the UFO mentioned above.

My UFO is also finished and has already been given away. The new owner is absolutely thrilled and took it straight to her cozy corner.

Now I have another blanket that’s still unfinished. But since Josefa already wrote that we choose a “UFO Queen” every month, I’ll save that one for February.

@ All UFO hunters

Your finished UFOs have turned out absolutely beautiful.

I only managed one, as already shown above.

But I’m sticking to the yarn diet with ease.
Tomorrow I’ll show you the rest of the pieces I still managed to finish.

Wishing you all a lovely day.

Christina, that turned out really pretty. :-)

Marion, I feel the same way. I also only have one UFO and have used up quite a bit of yarn. And I’m sticking to the yarn diet with ease. I have to add that today while shopping, I bravely walked right past the yarn section without picking anything up. ;-) Without the diet, I’m sure I would have bought some again.

After all, I want to stick with it until April.

I still have 25 UFOs, so I won’t run out of work.

Thanks, Monika—it’s for a child, too. My daughter’s best friend is moving.
Her mom bought a house a little farther away and is currently renovating it. They’ll move in at the end of March, but the child’s room is already finished, and my daughter wanted to give her something really special for her first visit to the new house.
Of course, there’s something for the mom, too. I wanted to give her a colorful door wreath. But she was also so in love with the blanket that I’m going to give her the second one, which is still lying around as a UFO in the bedroom dresser. There’s still quite a bit left to do on it, though. But I think I’ll definitely have it finished by the end of March.

By the way, your tissue covers are great. I have a similar one too, and I definitely wouldn’t want to be without it. But yours are much prettier, so colorful, and the heart is simply adorable. Just the right thing for Valentine’s Day.

Thanks, Dagmar! :-) I’ve already gotten a few orders from friends for tissue packet covers in their favorite colors. That uses up a lot of leftover yarn, and I get to spread some joy while I’m at it. :-) It’s just fun when you know it’s going to be well received. That’s exactly how you’re feeling right now with the blanket, too. Giving gifts is just such a wonderful thing!

Marion, we’ll make it by April—it’s so much more fun together, and it’s incredibly motivating! I don’t really have any UFOs left at the moment—just projects I’ve started—but I’ve had the yarn for my next projects sitting around for a long time. And now I’m finally going to use it.

Monika & Marion: I’ll try to make it to April too! I’m also walking past all the yarn deals with my eyes closed.

I don’t have any UFOs at the moment either, but I do have plenty of yarn in my closet. My husband thinks I’m totally crazy because I told him I want world domination. :-)))

Yay, Arni, how wonderful that you’ll be joining us until April! Now there are three of us.

Together, we’ll make this so much easier! :-) And afterward, shopping for yarn will be twice as much fun—trust me.

My husband gave me a really surprised look when I told him about the yarn diet and world domination (even though that part isn’t really that important to me). He’s learning all kinds of new expressions. ;-) And I think he’s actually pretty happy that I’m finally turning my yarn stash into beautiful things and we don’t have to buy an extra closet... hehe.

Wow. So many great finished projects. Man, you’re all so hard-working. I’m definitely going to join the yarn diet until April—probably even longer. In any case, I’m not buying any more yarn until I’ve finished at least 50 skeins.

Reading the latest posts, I’m almost a little frustrated that I have to break my “yarn fast” (not because of the title!), because I’d have plenty of materials and ideas to easily keep going until April—but the babies are due in February and March, and I really don’t have the right yarn for the blanket in the desired color or for the comforters and cuddly toys.
Without all of you and your amazing creations, I would never have been so motivated to work through my stash—thank you! I’ll still be posting pictures, including some of my finished UFOs!

Christina, don’t be sad. Instead, be happy that you have such great gifts for babies on your list. I’m sure that will bring you a lot of joy. Enjoy it!

After your purchase, you can simply start over and use up a lot of your stash by April. You’re definitely the UFO Queen. That’s already a wonderful thing in itself. ;-)

Warm regards to everyone
Monika

I think the whole world domination thing is great. Though I don’t need it—I’m happy to leave that to others.

The idea of extending the “wool diet” is a good one. My husband had promised me a cabinet in the basement. He even put it together. Then we were still missing the shelves. Now the shelves are in, but his stuff is in there too. He says he’ll clear it out now so I can put my yarn in.
I bet I’ll use it up faster than he’ll clear out his stuff.

But there’s a silver lining. I found 5 “magic eggs” from Dees-Traumgarne. One color with 2 eggs and one with 3 eggs. Just like Easter!
They’re all on the softer and thicker side for winter, but that’ll definitely last a long time.
I’ve been thinking since Sunday about all the things I can make with them.

So I’m trying to join in until April, too. Until after Easter or until the end of April?

Hi Dagmar

I didn’t really remember it anymore either; Josefa wrote: Quote start: The next Yarn Empress/Emperor will take place in April.

Yep, easily with my basement find!

Since I also bought a "tiny little bit" of Bobbel for my stash in December, my next 3 projects are covered. So, on to world domination.

Oh, the other day my husband noticed while vacuuming - I hate vacuuming, so he’s been doing it for years - that there are fewer projects behind the sofa. Whenever I start a new one, my previous unfinished one gets moved back there.

I’m already wondering, once we all have world wool domination, who’s going to finance my next yarn purchase? Because I feel a little out of balance without any reserve at all.

Hahahaha.... Ida, that’s funny.... :-) Maybe the withdrawal symptoms will kick in as early as April... grins.

Dagmar, that’s great that you’re joining the “World Domination” challenge. I think that makes you the fifth person in the group. And that really boosts the motivation to keep going. Very nice!!

In any case, I’ll probably go on a yarn binge when I go shopping afterward. And for now, I’m enjoying working through my beautiful stash.

By the way, my husband already gave me my birthday present early, since I really need it for my next project. No—not yarn, of course! But a set of KnitPro needles that I’ve wanted for a long time. He’s actually showing more and more interest in what I’m doing, by the way. ;-)

Monika, never say never!
My husband once said to me, “It can’t be that hard,” as he was watching me yet again.

I handed him the crochet piece I was holding at the time, and he gave it a try—and kept at it until he got the hang of it. Then he finished the row. For him, that was the end of it.
And I just watched in amazement at how quickly he figured out how to do it.

He did the same thing with knitting and sewing. He stuck with sewing. Today, he often sews his own things that he needs right away. Never anything super elaborate, but a little cover for a foam mat is definitely within his capabilities.

In return, I learned how to bleed the brakes. A woman doesn’t want to be outdone when it comes to learning something new...
And I know the technical terms for all of his tools and know exactly where everything is—in theory, that is, if they ever stay in their designated spots.

13182 Posts Recent Started

Wow, Dagmar, I really admire you for that. Because when it comes to mechanics, cars, and everything else that goes with them, I, on the other hand, have absolutely no interest at all. Without my husband, I’d probably end up at the repair shop every single time.

My husband is just as unwilling to even pick up a needle. Your husband is miles ahead of him in that regard. :-)

We’re both happy that we each like and are good at different things and that we complement each other so well. That said, I have to add that my husband is also great at ironing, doing laundry, and cleaning the house—and he often takes care of those things himself. Much to my delight, of course!

Yes, he can sew, too, when it comes to quickly fixing something. But that’s about it.

Still, you’re right—you should never say never. ;-)

I don’t have any photos to show, and I haven’t participated much in the threads either…
But I can proudly say that I haven’t bought a single gram of yarn this month—not even needles, sewing thread, or stuffing… 0, nothing.

Instead, I crocheted a Half-Granny shawl from scraps, continued working on my motif blanket (I’m now at 14.8%!), and started the beautiful “Calin” shawl by a designer here on CP.

Maybe I’ll stick with this “diet” for another month—we’ll see.
But my fingers are already itching :D

Hi Josefa,

since I won’t be able to do any crocheting today, I’ll go
ahead and send you my figures:

In January, I used the following from my yarn stash:

for my Easter Bunny Girl: 250 gr. of pink yarn, 50 gr. of white yarn
for my poncho: 1,200 gr. of yarn in total, 500 gr. of it in 2018
for a triangle shawl: 150 gr. of rainbow mohair yarn cake
for a second triangle shawl: 100 gr. so far

So that brings my total yarn used in January to 1,050 gr., and I
didn’t buy any yarn in January.

As for UFOs, I finished one, and that was my poncho, which
then also became a blanket.

Best regards, Heike

Here’s my UFO, the basket.... The poor thing had been pretty squashed in the drawer since the end of September. It still needs to be reshaped ;-) but I’m going to stuff my two current works-in-progress into it right now, and then it’ll take shape. It really wasn’t that much work—I could easily have done it earlier—but oh well. So here’s Mr. Basket’s before-and-after show:

Hooray: four fewer UFOs! The towel was still missing about half a dozen half-stars and countless ends to weave in; the coat hanger was about halfway done; the dishcloth was missing its border; and the shopping net got a second base and the polar bears added…

From my yarn stash, I’ve made (in addition to the wrist warmers and snowmen already shown): the mouse bookmark (which was actually still part of the UFOs!), a pair of gloves, two bath poufs, and a 68-cm scarf… And I didn’t buy any yarn!

Who’s still missing?
Where did I leave out any info?

The response to these projects has overwhelmed me. You are wonderful.
I didn’t expect so many posts, participants, so many finished UFOs, and so much discipline with the yarn diet. Thank you for that.

@Iglinz,
Your shawl wasn’t a UFO?
Were you taking part in the yarn diet? I’m not completely sure, but I’ll be happy to give you a title if needed.

@Mowi,
no, I didn’t forget about the Emperors—it just took a while to gather the info, which is why the update was delayed. Read the post above again.

Dear Josefa, yes, I took part in the “Yarn Diet.” I didn’t buy any yarn all month. I’m definitely not the UFO Queen, though, because I didn’t start the shawl until January.

OK, cool, I’ll add you as a “Wool Empress.”
Congratulations :-) I think that’s great.

Thank you, Josefa, for your truly wonderful award ceremony!
Without you, none of us would have had the stamina to see this through.

I have to agree with Monika on that! Sometimes my fingers have been itching like crazy, especially within about a 100-meter radius of the yarn shop :-)

Dear Josefa,
I’m not the UFO Queen. I only participated in the “wool diet” with the hat and booties. Right now, I actually only have one project on my needles at a time, so I don’t have any UFOs.

Thanks, Iglinz.

@Arni,
not a "UFO Queen," but a successful yarn diet? okay like that?

Yes. That’s right. Thanks. I don’t want to cheat, after all.

Dear Josefa

thank you.
I couldn’t agree more—you did a wonderful job hosting the awards ceremony again.

Congratulations to everyone.

@Anja—the pattern was on YouTube. I’ll check tomorrow about the name

Dear Josefa, thank you very much for the praise! I’m happy that the UFO box has become emptier — there are still a few projects waiting for the next campaign!
As I already wrote, I’m out of the running for the “World Domination” title, but I kept it up in January and deliberately didn’t buy any baby yarn yet (and of course nothing else either) — I’ll do that tomorrow!

Thank you so much for the kind words, Josefa :)

The half-granny shawl I made wasn’t a UFO—I made that from scratch :)

I started my motif blanket last August or so and expect to finish it sometime in 2022 or thereabouts.

I’ve only just started on my shirt.

--> None of these were UFOs that were completed.

@Michaela

Glad your cat likes it, too. ????????????

Then you’ll just have to make another one. That’s definitely no problem—I’m sure you still have some “diet yarn” left.

Oh, Michaela, that’s how problems solve themselves all on their own. And as you can see, your kitty likes it so much as a new cozy basket that you don’t need to look for a purpose for it anymore. :-)

:-)))) 2022

I’ve had this cardigan lying around here for 6 years..... I just can’t get around to it. And all that’s missing are the sleeves....

@Anja So you’ll find the monsters under “Babymonster häkeln.” Right at the top, there’s a video from Carolines Welt.

Dear Josefa

Well, I think I’d already earned the title of “Wool Empress” in January with the gloves, the wrist warmers, the two little snowmen, the rose bath sponges, and the pansy bookmark (I really am that ambitious!!!), even if they were only small amounts of yarn.

OK, ladies,
I’ve removed the note about the UFO Queen for Tina again. It’ll definitely work out next time.

Instead, I’ve named ChristinaE not only the UFO Queen but also the Wool Empress.
Congratulations. Two titles are better than one. :-)

Who—or what—have I forgotten?

Is working on UFOs and going on a yarn diet generally a women’s thing?

@Anja: Haha, I once had an amigurumi (a dragon with sooo many individual parts!) sitting around as a UFO for ages... When I finally got around to sewing the thing together, I sewed the wing pieces (that would have been the last thing...) on the wrong way around... I wanted to take the whole thing apart again and ended up cutting right into the wing...
Of course, I didn’t have any more yarn and had no idea where to get some...
In the end, I just took that stupid thing and threw it in the trash :D
--> I would’ve won the title “UFO Killer” there ;-)
Hopefully my blanket won’t meet the same fate someday... ;)

@Josefa: At least here in this thread, it seems to be a women’s thing :) Maybe one of the crafters will chime in.

Muahaha UFO killer — I’m cracking up!!!!!!!
We could also crown some “UFO mummies”..... :-)
Can anyone beat my 6 years?

Man, we’re so creative ♡

Thanks, Caro, for the monster suggestion ♡♡

What a shame. I don’t think I could throw any project away.
I can’t top 6 years, although there are a few mummies among mine. I only started knitting again in 2012, but I’m not very good at it. A short time later I took up crochet.

Speaking of men. Well, at the yarn fair in August I did see some who were excited about sock templates and needles, but still, to me it’s something like the Yeti. I don’t personally know a single man who does handicrafts. Only the MyBoshis from the media. And that’s about it.

“Can anyone beat my 6 years?”
I can easily top that. Somewhere in a bag in the basement lies a half-finished Smurf. I wanted to knit it for my son in 1988, but I couldn’t manage the heels. My son is now 37 (!) and is no longer interested in it.
I almost think there’s also a Pumuckel PiA (probably the same age) somewhere in the basement. Unfortunately, I’m a collector and can’t throw anything away.
If my arm gets better at some point, I’ll dig them out again and maybe finish them too.

Best regards, Marlies

Marlies

I feel the same way. I have a really hard time parting with yarn, which is why I have such a large stash.

Do you have grandchildren yet? They’d surely still love your Smurf and Pumuckl today. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Best regards, Marion

I also got rid of a project like that a few weeks ago. A striped sweater for my son in size 134/140. But he’s 1.90m tall now and wears XL.

No, unfortunately I don’t have any grandchildren and don’t expect any anytime soon.
If I ever manage to finish those two, I’ll just keep them for myself [Image removed]

Best regards, Marlies

The striped sweater is totally funny, too.

Oh, that reminds me of another anecdote…
I only started knitting and crocheting again in November 2016. Until then, a mummy-like UFO had been lying around in my yarn basket for an estimated 20–25 years. It was supposed to be a blue-and-white cotton sweater for me. All that was missing was one sleeve.

By then, though, I didn’t like the colors or the shape anymore. So I decided to just unravel the sweater and use the yarn for something else. My granddaughter got a baby dress made from some of the yarn. From the other scraps, I mostly crocheted storage baskets.

It’s funny reading what you all write here. :-)

What’s so worthwhile about that? I certainly didn’t want to become the “Chief Mummy”.....

Oh, so that’s how it is—the pyramids weren’t built for dead pharaohs at all, but for UFOs. :-)
No. My ideas are heading in a slightly different direction, but not until tomorrow.
If my ideas don’t work, then we’ll go with yours.
