Doll Thread 2022 + 2021: New addition to the family + Making up for the lack of social contact during the COVID-19 pandemic + Having fun with our inner child

Oh, Petra, that’s such a lovely project. I’m sure you’ll show us some really pretty things. I’m looking forward to it. Old clothes work really well for this.

New Patterns for February 2022: Start Crafting Now

Another new baby doll has found its way to me. It’s about 35 cm tall and needed a warm sleeping bag right away. I quickly gathered some leftover yarn and cast on. The sleeping bag was finished in two days, and the baby is now nice and cozy.

If you have knitting experience, it’s very easy to knit.

New Knitting Patterns for February 2022: Start Knitting Now

My doll family has a new addition. Little Merle (35 cm) arrived at my place feeling quite chilly. So she quickly needed a warm sleeping bag. It was finished in two days, and now she’s nice and cozy.

The sleeping bag is easy to make if you’ve knitted before. It fits dolls and teddy bears up to about 36 cm tall, and even a little more.

Petra, that’s so cool. So now you have a classic car. Our car will qualify next year. We just love it too much, so we’ll probably get an “H” plate for it too. :-)

New shoes and a bed for Kruemel

Now my second baby is here, and I’m totally in love. She’s new, and she’s a girl. The new one is Merle, and the one I already had is now called Merlin. She arrived wrapped in a cloth with a little bear embroidered on it. Here’s the photo:

And here are the two of them together. They’re my babies now—35 cm tall.

Thanks, Josefa! I wish you all a wonderful weekend, too.

Shoulder pads are back in style

Wow, what interesting photos you’ve shared here. I have no idea where my photos from that time even are. I got together with my current husband in the ’80s—that was the biggest highlight. All I know is that the “Mecki” haircut was in style back then. I had that cut too, and I wasn’t happy with it at all. Once my hair grew out again, I always had a slight perm until about 10 years ago, and I was happy with it because my hair has always been very thin. However, it takes a toll on your hair. I never had that kind of messy mop of hair—just curly hair that looked natural.

I liked wearing jackets with padded shoulders because I have pretty narrow shoulders. But they were only very subtle pads. I can’t even imagine that today.

Darning Socks / Making Socks Last Longer: Is darning socks making a comeback thanks to the sustainability trend?

I, too, learned how to darn socks in school and still know how to do it. It’s easiest with a darning mushroom.

To be honest, it’s not one of my favorite tasks. I always put it off for quite a while. But for hand-knitted or thick socks, it’s definitely worth it.

The thin store-bought socks are usually so “worn out” that it’s not worth the effort.

Of course, the same goes for socks. These socks have a heel that’s very easy to knit. The pattern explains how to do it using the CraSyTrio—that is, with 3 needles—but it can also be knitted with a set of double-pointed needles. The pattern includes several sizes.

Great designs with no ends to weave in: easy to make and still enchanting

For this buttoned cowl scarf, you only need one ball of yarn. So there are only the starting and ending yarn tails to weave in.

Go to the knitting pattern

It’s the same with this shoulder warmer / cowl. One ball of yarn is enough, and there are only the starting and ending yarn tails to weave in. Very easy to knit.

These dishcloths and washcloths also only have the starting and ending yarn tails to weave in. They are a great stash-busting project. The pattern includes 6 different stitch patterns, so they can be used for various purposes.

If these little raglan sweaters are knitted in just one color, here too only the starting and ending yarn tails are left. The pattern includes several sizes, so, for example, little teddy bears and dolls can be dressed in hand knits just as well as dolls up to 50 cm.

Less is more....

Wow, Petra, treasures like these are truly wonderful and rare. I have some of these myself, or at least I recognize them. They bring back memories. For many years, I sewed on my mother’s old sewing machine. You still had to pedal it.

I’m in the middle of tidying up and decluttering right now, too—it’s actually kind of fun. And I’m finding all sorts of things I’ve been looking for for a long time.

New shoes and a bed for Kruemel

Veronika, welcome to the Doll Moms Club! :) That’s so nice that you have a soft spot for doll babies, too.

Today I received the twin babies for my two granddaughters. They’re so cute, especially all their features. When I lay them side by side and “turn them on,” they babble, burp, say “Mama,” and laugh over and over. And they take turns looking at each other. I’m completely fascinated, and I’m sure the two girls will be, too. Here’s a photo of the twins.

No, I’m not going to keep them—just dress them up. ;-)
My little brother for Merle will arrive in the mail tomorrow. Then I’ll show you both of them.

Andrea, you’ve kind of inspired me with your doll’s bed. I’m now thinking about how I can make a pretty doll’s bed out of a cardboard box.

How sweet, Andrea! Both doll children are absolutely adorable, and so is the little doll bed with the beautiful bedding. I’m also really enjoying being a doll mom right now. I’m making up for lost time from my childhood.

I just picked up little Merle from the swap group and am going to dress her now. Today I couldn’t resist and ordered her a little twin sister on eBay. Once I get her, I’ll take a picture of the two of them together. One has brown eyes, the other blue.

Working properties of organic and recycled cotton: are there any differences?

Ina, those are some interesting things you’re trying out and sharing. I’ve never heard of that before. I’m also curious to hear about your experience with vegan wool. Yes, I’m a fan of recycling and reusing, too.

I really like using Drops’ recycled cotton. In my experience, it’s easy to work with. Above all, it washes well—which is important, of course. I’ve already knitted a lot of children’s clothes with it, as well as washcloths and dish towels, for example. It’s not quite as soft as regular cotton, though, but it’s perfect for garments like little dresses or even doll clothes.

I’ve also worked with organic cotton before. That was very soft.

Thanks, Ines, for the feedback :)

Yes, the box — I’m curious to see whether it’ll hold up until the end. With plenty of tape wrapped around it, it should work — in theory.

This yarn swap package really is exciting. I’m totally thrilled.

By the way, I struck again today on my swap exchange. It’s not like I have enough yarn ... no, no, no. ;-)
I just couldn’t resist 730 g of beautiful 100% virgin wool with about 200 m per 50 g.  So, like sock yarn. You can make quite a lot with that. That’s just how it is with yarn addiction... (shame on me).

Dear Ina, I’ve almost finished the slipover for Linja using your “unloved” sock yarn. The yarn feels great once it’s knitted up. Nice and warm and fluffy. I paired it with red stripes. I’ll also use red yarn for the armholes and the neckline.

Here are two photos, one of them showing the back. This way you can see what the yarn looks like when knitted. What I really love is that it creates stripes.

Wow, Steffi, I’m so happy for you that you’ll soon get to knit for such a little angel. That’s always a highlight. And I’m sure you have more than enough ideas. It’s a dream come true!

Oh, Ines, that’s a really great size for a rug, and you’ve got quite a bit of work ahead of you. To make it slip-resistant, there are surely lots of options for what you can sew underneath it. As far as I know, there are special products available for that. You’ll find plenty of ideas online.

Yeah, Marion, I’m really taken with that tunic you made. I love wearing things like that. Maybe it’ll be a summer garden project. You finished yours pretty quickly. Our babies will be next soon, too. Now I have to get Merle some clothes first, so she at least has the basics.

Christina, your cloths look absolutely fantastic, especially in those colors. Are you giving them away as pot holders?
That reminds me—I still have the second washcloth to finish. I’ll probably send them off in March along with the slipover for Linja’s birthday.

And I finally have something new to show you all. Little Merle got a hat.

And the slipover for Linja is already quite a bit further along, and it won’t be long before it’s finished. It feels super cozy.

February Projects 2022 + January Projects 2022, Part 3: the Crazypatterns Craft Group

Wow, there are so many beautiful things to admire again. :)

Ines, your doorstop bunny turned out amazing. It would fit right in at my place, too. It looks pretty big and is a really cute eye-catcher.
You’re crocheting a rug? Wow! How big is it going to be? It already looks very promising—and like a mammoth project. Apparently, you love big projects too, because as I’ve read, you’ve still got a blanket to work on. Great! There’s quite a lot to see here.

Marion, I’m sure you’re really enjoying the new wooden ceilings now. I like that sort of thing too, but not the actual DIY work. I’ve fallen so in love with your tunic that I’m thinking about knitting one myself. Because if it uses so little yarn, that would be a great way to use up my lovely fine yarn. Right now, though, I’m working on other things.
Your baby booties are too cute. I’m going to knit something like that in tiny sizes for my babies.

Marlene, your tulip has come at just the right time for the start of spring. It’s sure to coax the other tulips out of the ground.

Steffi, your sweater looks really complicated with all those pieces that need to be put together. And as I can see, it really isn’t that easy. It’s really frustrating when it doesn’t fit right. It wouldn’t be for me right now, since I don’t have the patience for it. At least not at the moment.

I’m really in my element right now—designing doll clothes. First, I have to get Merle dressed, then it’s Sternchen and Tommi’s turn. Maybe I’ll make something for the two of them in matching styles.

By the way, I’ve already started the slipover for Linja using sock yarn. It’s fun to knit. It’s a great little side project to do in the evening while watching or listening to a movie. ;-)

This UFO just won’t get finished....

I think the shawl is really pretty, too, and I’d solve it the same way with the knots. It’s a good idea. Yeah, it’s really frustrating when you run out of yarn at the end.
