I don’t have much experience with it. I once crocheted a cashmere loop scarf. It was very soft and a breeze to work with.

Of course, little angels with golden wings were a must on the tree!

When she was already quite close, she called out, “Erich! I need you!” (Erich is the pet name for “Stricknadlerich,” which is a bit of a mouthful to pronounce).

“Come on, knitting needle,” she said. “Let’s put out some bait!”

A shrewd deduction ... Stricknadlerich could really only have been hiding in that half-finished sweater that had been grumbling to itself for months.

The crochet hook was crocheting glitter garlands, while the knitting needle was still searching for its partner, because it couldn’t knit all by itself.

Inna, you’re right—my choice of words wasn’t very precise. What I meant were things like dehorning cows so more can be crammed into the barn, or feeding them fermented silage or genetically modified soy instead of grass, or calling chickens “free-range” when they have only 10 cm of outdoor space.
I think the question of whether to be vegan or not is one that’s driven by a lot of emotion on both sides. There are arguments for both sides, but that would require a much more in-depth discussion. Basically, I believe that the way we treat animals is part of the way we treat this world in general. That also includes crop farming.

I see it similarly to Fun Design—I’m a bit torn on this. Eating meat is okay, but wearing fur isn’t? What about leather bags, leather jackets, and the like? Shoes? If you don’t want animals to be used at all, then you have to go vegan. If you use animal products—whether as food or clothing—then fur is part of that too.
  As a compromise, I’d like to see animal husbandry—if it has to exist at all—carried out in a species-appropriate manner. That would drive up the price of this special treatment considerably and perhaps encourage a more conscious approach to animal products.
Although, in my view, these kinds of questions are more of a luxury problem. For most people in the world, this question doesn’t even arise.

Actually, it’s not that much for me—on average, maybe 1–2 hours a day. Some days it’s more, but then there are also days when I don’t do any crafts at all.

Double-faced knitting is a technique where you knit two sides at the same time. These are often two-color patterns where the two sides are exact mirror images of each other—so what’s red on the front is green on the back, and vice versa. You can also knit with just one color, but in that case, you’ll need to use two skeins of that color at the same time. The result is a double-layered knitted piece that’s particularly warm.
Basically, you have “pairs of stitches” on the needle and then knit one stitch from the front and one stitch from the back alternately. It’s not as difficult as it might sound. I always do this with both strands over my index finger.

The vast majority of my patterns have been tested multiple times. I have a Ravelry group where these tests take place, and I’m always happy when less experienced people join in, because that’s a great way to spot where problems might lie, even if everything is actually described correctly. Sometimes people sign up to test a pattern and then don’t finish knitting it, but that’s so rare that it doesn’t really bother me. It happens.
I have a few patterns that haven’t been tested, but even those I at least have proofread and have had the numbers thoroughly checked. You usually overlook your own mistakes—you get too close to the work—and it’s always good to have other people look over the pattern before it’s published.

Funny, I’ve actually thought about the smartphone thing too. I’m just still trying to figure out how to make something like that that’s actually functional. I mean, for most people, their smartphone is practically glued to their hand, and they run you over on the street because they’re so busy swiping that they don’t see anything else. It would have to be something you can open with a single motion. Maybe even with a transparent film over the display so you don’t miss a thing. Tricky!

So, the infinity scarf for my sister-in-law is planned for November—or rather, it’s already in the works. As for the socks, I still need to weave in the ends. There aren’t any photos of either project yet.
I can show you a scarf—maybe that counts for November. In any case, I wove in the last ends on November 1st.

Okay, I think this is the right place. First of all, I’d like to thank everyone for the kind words—even those from so long ago. Somehow I’ve been at a loss for words lately; I hope I didn’t offend anyone.
Here’s an update on the latest developments. I’ve already told you about my father’s passing. That meant I lost both my parents within a few months. Right after that, my husband had to go to the hospital with heart problems and fluid in his lungs. That was the worst part of all—the fear of losing him. He’s been home for a while now, but he’s very weak. Every step seems like torture for him, but of course it would be good if he could at least move around a little so he can get back on his feet. Right now we’re in the process of moving into the house he inherited from his mother a while back. There aren’t as many steps to climb there, and you can tell he feels comfortable there. Maybe things will get better again.
My own apartment is currently being used as an “office and studio.” I don’t really want to give it up. It’s mine, and if this whole situation doesn’t turn out well, I’ll definitely move back. You never know, after all.
I’m crafting like crazy—all kinds of things that don’t require much thinking. I just finished a pair of socks (the Christmas production has begun), and now I’m crocheting a loop scarf for my sister-in-law. Writing is almost impossible right now—or at least it’s going very slowly. Constant dripping wears away the stone, right?
So, that’s it for now with the status update. I still have an appointment with the notary this week, and I also want to go through our parents’ belongings with my brother. It’ll probably be painful. Oh well, that’s just how it is.
And now I’ll start checking in regularly again—I promise!

I’d also like to thank you for the lovely awards ceremony, even though I didn’t actually participate. Not that you should think you’ve gotten rid of me—it’s just that everything is very depressing right now. My father passed away, and at the moment I’m spending my days at the hospital with my husband, who is seriously ill, and I’m very worried. I can’t knit right now—I just can’t bring myself to do it.

It’s way too hot for me again. Last week I started an alpaca scarf, hoping it would get cooler. Guess that didn’t work out. Now it’s sitting in the corner, and just looking at it makes me hot.

Spiral patterns are actually quite simple and very relaxing to knit. I’m not very familiar with crochet, though :-)
They’re particularly well-suited for items knitted in the round (hats, for example) and are essentially a special type of rib pattern. The trick is to cast on one more or one fewer stitch than you would need for a normal rib pattern. This creates the spiral effect.
