Double-Face Technique: What Is It?

Double-faced knitting is a technique where you knit two sides at the same time. These are often two-color patterns where the two sides are exact mirror images of each other—so what’s red on the front is green on the back, and vice versa. You can also knit with just one color, but in that case, you’ll need to use two skeins of that color at the same time. The result is a double-layered knitted piece that’s particularly warm.
Basically, you have “pairs of stitches” on the needle and then knit one stitch from the front and one stitch from the back alternately. It’s not as difficult as it might sound. I always do this with both strands over my index finger.

I love this technique.

It lets you knit two sides at once without having to sew them together.

The yarn shouldn’t be too thick.
I find that medium-weight yarn works best.

It’s important to pay attention to which thread is where.

I like the double-face technique too, but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ll get around to it someday.
