Which techniques do you find really difficult or complicated?

Sewing with a machine is a nightmare for me. If I manage to thread it and it’s just supposed to go straight, it works a little bit (though “my straight line” takes a few curves...).

Hand sewing goes pretty well. I’ve even sewn curtains for an entire apartment by hand. I can also sew zippers by hand, but I can’t do it at all with a machine.

I’d love to be able to sew something for myself sometime, but when I think about cutting out the fabric and all that, I come out in spots.

Bobbin lace is so wonderful. But I’m just as unlikely to try my hand at that as I am at tapestry.

I’ve done a lot of embroidery, but it’s not really my thing either. And if they’re counted patterns, they’ll never get finished (like my sailboat picture) because I just can’t get the hang of it.

April Projects: Final Sprint and Awards Ceremony

no, unfortunately, all we ever heard was "we need to do something about that."

Thank you for your good wishes, your sympathy, and also for the tight hug.
That really helps a lot.

Kind regards, Marlies

April Projects: Final Sprint and Awards Ceremony

Hi everyone!
Congratulations to all of you. You’ve made such amazing things!!!

Things are already getting out of hand for me again. I really wanted to participate, but then the partner of my very best friend (who is really more like a sister in spirit) was admitted to the hospital. She needed support. It was a rollercoaster of emotions until things got serious. He didn’t tell anyone what was going on, and she buried her head in the sand. When I saw which ward he was placed in, I knew it would be a long and painful journey.
Well, and then things turned out completely differently. On Wednesday we visited him, and he even walked us all the way to the exit. Early Friday morning, he passed away. We were completely taken aback.
There wasn’t much we could do because the two of them weren’t married.
Now the children are inheriting everything, and my friend will soon be out on the street.

Well, I did manage to do a little crocheting these past few days—or rather, some mending.
You may have seen the sunflower and the bouquet of tulips in the gallery. Both were broken by the “dear” grandchildren. Neither the parents nor the grandmother (who, as his ex-wife, invited herself over for coffee with us) seemed bothered by it. My friend didn’t dare say much, for fear of getting kicked out even sooner.
She had tears in her eyes when she saw the wreckage. The tulips are fixed, and I’m working on the sunflower.

Now I’m just hoping that my (ex-)husband’s 30 radiation treatments go well and that the next big blow isn’t waiting for me.
Best regards, Marlies

Just saying...

Thank you so much for the kind wishes!

Today it was my turn to deliver birthday greetings from the local chapter. It looks like I left the beautiful sunshine with the birthday person, because it’s starting to cloud over now.

Have a lovely Wednesday, everyone!

Easter Bunny

That’s just the fast-paced world we live in. I actually think that it doesn’t always do children any favors to push them into “real life” so early.

After all, it’s an exciting time for the little ones (and for parents and grandparents too)—a time when they make Easter crafts or learn Christmas poems, for example. You should enjoy this time for as long as you can.

Bought any yarn today?

I was very good today and managed to resist, despite the new, sneaky sales tactic:
the yarn was set up right at the checkout area!!!

Just imagine how mean it is when you’re standing in that loooong line and have to spend the whole time waiting staring at that gorgeous yarn... but I’m determined to stick with it...grin.

Crochet Basics: Which Stitches Are Absolutely Essential?

The most important one is probably the chain stitch, because it is -almost always- the foundation.
Single crochet stitches for crocheting in rows and rounds/spiral rounds. For rounds, the slip stitch comes into play.

I think it’s great that crochet patterns very often include a few tips and tricks. A big THANK YOU to the authors for that!
That’s how I discovered “invisible” decreases, and now the “little holes” are gone.

Then come double crochet and half double crochet. That’s probably the “basic set.”

Contrary to my dear grandma’s advice, don’t necessarily start with potholder yarn.
You can get snagged easily and then have to deal with loose strands. (My experience from school days.)

Good luck to everyone and have fun with this great hobby!

Best regards, Marlies

Starching

I’m on the same page. It’s easy to do and works perfectly well.

I’m a bit hesitant to try the sugar water method. Has anyone tried that yet?

Are you doing well? Tell me about it.

I’m finally allowed to start crocheting again—very, very slowly—yippee!

My “first creations” were a bouquet of tulips for Grandma and Grandpa’s iron wedding anniversary.

Wow, 65 years of marriage—I’m not even that old yet. And this is already the second “iron couple” in our dance group.

Maybe I’ll manage to get through a few more PiAs...

Filling Material for Baby Toys

For toys, I always use old sheer tights (or sponges—for example, sponges work well for cars and can be easily cut to size).
Cutting up tights into small pieces is a bit tedious, but then you can just toss them in the washing machine when needed.

How are you all doing? Are you all doing well?

Finally, some positive news about my arm and shoulder: the biggest restriction has been released.
Now the treatment is going deeper, which is very painful, but that’s something I’m willing to put up with.
Until I’m allowed to pick up my crochet hook again, I’m enjoying your photos and stories.
