Are you all doing well?

Dear Petra, I hope you’ve managed to get through this difficult ordeal “okay.” A few years ago, we had to put our Benny to sleep. For him, it was a release, but for us, it was no consolation. Eventually, it gets easier—even if you’ll never forget your beloved pet.
I’m sending you a virtual hug and wishing you and your family lots of strength.

Best regards, Marlies

How are you? What are you up to?

It was absolutely wonderful yesterday with the shanty choirs and the fresh butter cake, but unfortunately it was also chilly and very drafty. Today it’s gotten really cold, and there was a bit of drizzle. Walking home for 40 minutes, drenched in sweat after a strenuous physical therapy session, wasn’t great either. I hope I can nip this cold in the bud.
Otherwise, I’ve been trying to keep working on my many projects, but preparing for tomorrow’s dance class—I’m back in charge for two weeks and a performance—with two new dances is distracting me a bit. I haven’t danced the performance program myself yet, so I always get a little nervous when announcing the dances.
Maybe I can focus a bit more on my crocheting tonight.

Weekend plans?

Saturday is all about crocheting. Well, and a little housework...
On Sunday, we’re heading to the Kulturdiele for the baking festival. Three shanty choirs and some absolutely delicious butter cake are waiting for us there.

Wishing everyone a wonderful, relaxing weekend.
Best regards, Marlies

Have you bought any yarn today?

On Tuesday, I bought a ball of gray yarn for my elephant. The chubby little guy needs more yarn than I bought.

Do you have any needles or hooks free? What’s on the ones in use?

My crochet hooks are currently busy with:
an elephant, two African figures, five dancing mice, three door wreaths, an anchor, a steering wheel, a pillow (filet swan pattern), a large window decoration (filet swan), and little projects for in between (when it’s not worth starting on the bigger pieces).
None of them are PiAs. They’re still in the box for now.

When do you get started on Christmas?

@ Elisande: That looks great.

I actually make little things throughout the year that also work well for Christmas. The real busy season starts in October.

Weekend Plans: What are you up to?

The 50th anniversary celebration week here in Hemmoor is slowly coming to an end.
Thursday was a lively afternoon with dance groups and a shanty choir, and tonight we went to a Low German theater performance. I'll have sore laughing muscles tomorrow.
Saturday and Sunday will probably be more about crocheting again.

Wishing everyone a lovely, relaxing weekend.

Best regards, Marlies

So, how are you all doing today?

My arm—or rather, my shoulder—is really bothering me again. I had to stop taking the painkillers because they were raising my blood pressure so much. Yesterday it was back up to 210/100. My heart was pounding in my ears.
But I can still crochet.

I just found out a little while ago that I’m going to be a grandma in January. It’s just a shame that my daughter doesn’t want any contact. So I probably won’t get to meet my grandchild. Well, the main thing is that everything goes well (she’s already 41) and the little one is healthy.

A Sunny Weekend

Sofi’s World: Congratulations on passing your school-leaving exams.

Thanks for your well-wishes. The dancing went well, but everything around it was chaos. First, the start was delayed a lot, there was no one there who knew how to operate the sound system, and the chairwoman was nowhere to be seen. I could have saved myself the emcee’s script, too. They ended up saying something completely different. Nah, that only makes it partly fun.

Now I’m going to get right to crocheting. Five dancing mice and an elephant are waiting for me.

A Sunny Weekend

Have a lovely weekend too, dear Josefa.

@ Arni: get well soon.

I'm trying to distract myself from stage fright with crocheting. On Sunday there’s a half-hour performance with the "Flotten Sohlen" at an exhibition/trade fair. I can do moderation, but I’d rather be dancing.

On Saturday, of course, it’s time to watch soccer.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.
Best, Marlies

Disadvantages of Crafting

@ Tina: That quote is brilliant and fits so well.

@ Petra: It’s good to know I’m not the only one who thinks that way.

Every hobby has its pros and cons and costs money. That’s just how it is.
Still, I have to say that when I’m shopping for yarn, I really have to be careful to stick to my tight budget. That’s when common sense often kicks in and says, “That wasn’t in the budget for this month.” But of course, common sense falls by the wayside now and then ... as so often in life.

Too much of anything isn’t healthy, so I always have to take breaks—which is, of course, super hard with such a great hobby—and then it’s easy to end up learning the hard way.

Things always look a little chaotic at my place. My living room is also my workspace. I’m totally fine with that (after all, it’s called a “living” room, and if I’m living there, you can definitely tell), but when guests come over, my guilty conscience kicks in.

Then there’s another important point: a lot of people like my stuff. That’s actually an advantage, but I end up giving things away and therefore hardly have anything left for myself. Even if it really (!) was meant for me ...

Best regards, Marlies

How have you developed as crafters, and what direction would you like to take?

When I think back to my elementary school days… oh my!
Then my little sisters were born, and I started crocheting for them.
My daughter is four months older than her youngest aunt. So it happened that the aunts often got the same things as their niece. The double christening took place in crocheted christening gowns.

Doilies and curtains were added to the mix. In between, we made lots of window decorations out of cardstock. I mostly knitted socks to keep a florist’s feet warm, but also sweaters.
Since then, I’ve crocheted all sorts of things, and thanks to CP, I never run out of ideas.
That way, I always have personal gifts on hand.

Where do I want to go from here? It would be nice if this hobby could eventually bring in some money.

What do you do with your finished crafts?

A lot of it gets given away, but only to people who truly appreciate the work.
I’ve already crocheted quite a few commissioned pieces, such as curtains, sweaters, and tablecloths. The next set of curtains is already lined up as well.

I also trade items for yarn or sell them for the cost of materials (giving everything away would end up being too expensive). Sometimes someone comes by with yarn and has specific ideas about what should be made from it. That can be tricky at times, but we usually come to an agreement.

A few small items usually stay in the “unexpected occasion” box. That way, I always have a little gift on hand. Or someone comes by who needs something “really quickly.”

Very rarely do I actually get to keep something for myself. Usually, someone comes along who loves it and wants to have it. The “I can just make that again” approach actually works very rarely. I also haven’t managed to finally crochet curtains for my windows. Something always comes up. Even the three patterns for “my jackets” are safely stored in the crafts folder on my computer...
